I did. Cleaned chickens. Made cookies. Leo to town at nite but I stayed home.

Here is the long entry for Saturday, June 26:

"Don't wake her now but work her like 'Hell' when she gets up."
and did I ever. Cleaned chickens & made cookies. Not so very hot. Leo went to town at nite & I went to bed as soon as Hit Parade was over.

My comments: Wow! Interesting diary notation…  ;-)

By the Way: This was her mother Dorothy's birthday. Notice not a mention. Birthdays and anniversaries hardly ever celebrated and few, if any holidays... always was that way!  ;-)

Here is the short entry for Friday, June 25:

Cooled off. At office in morning. Folks to Textor's anniversary. Pete, Helen, Elmer & I to Laurence Welk dance. Keen time.

Here is the long entry for Friday, June 25:

Cooled off as if it were going to rain in pm. I went to work in morning. Plenty hot then. Got ready to go to the dance in pm. Folks to Textor's anniversary. Pete came about 8:30. Helen & Elmer went with us. Laurence Welk & was he ever swell. Had the keenest time. Elmer, Pete, Lee D., Hartwixen.

My comments: Well… Lawrence Welk band in Carroll - "was he ever swell" - and we watched him on TV years later. Small world, even then and there!  ;-)

From Wikipedia: "During the 1930s, Welk led a traveling big band that specialized in dance tunes and "sweet" music. Initially, the band traveled around the country by car. They were too poor to rent rooms, so they usually slept and changed clothes in their cars."

My comments:

Here is the short entry for Wednesday, June 23:

Hottest day. Ironed. Took a shower. Leo & I to town. Helen & I watched them skate. Ran off with Pete's car while he was getting his hair cut.

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, June 23:

Hottest day yet. I did separator & cleaned up the house. Mom did dishes & I ironed. Got all thru' early in the pm. Took a shower, cleaned up, & Leo & I went to town about 8:30. With Helen watching them skate. Really warm. Pete brought me home. While he was getting a hair cut we kids ran off with his car.

My comments: I'll bet Pete wasn't too happy; but he seems to have developed a way to deal with some of her (still childish) ways! Her other attributes seemed to make up for it, once he figured it out!  One opinion.  ;-)

Here is the short entry for Tuesday, June 22:

Warmer. Mosquito bites. To town in pm. Made ice cream. Listened to Louis-Braddock. Clark & Leib over eating ice cream.

Here is the long entry for Tuesday, June 22:

Warmer yet. Did I ever got (sic) mosquito bitten last nite. I did dishes & separator & Mom washed. All through by 10:00. I slept till about 4:30 & then went in to town before supper. Did chores, made ice cream, listened to Braddock-Louis fight. To bed about 10:00. Clark & Lieb here in evening.

My comments: Heavyweight boxing championship fight on the radio - my, how times have changed.

From Wikipedia: "The stage was set for Louis's title shot. On the night of the fight, June 22, 1937, Braddock was able to knock Louis down in round one, but afterward could accomplish little. After inflicting constant punishment, Louis defeated the "Cinderella Man" by knockout in Round eight. Louis's ascent to the World Heavyweight Championship was complete."

Here is the short entry for Saturday, June 19:

Leo and Pete took mules & got Ford out. Sprayed spuds all day. Tired. Cleaned a chicken. Leo & I to town. Got groceries. Pete brought me home. To bed about 11:30.

Here is the long entry for Saturday, June 19:

Pete here in morning. He & Leo took the team & got the car out. Sprayed potatoes from 10:00 till 4:00. 80 gallons of Arsenate of Lead. Was I ever tired. Cleaned chicken, did up the house work. Leo & I to town. I got a lot of groceries. Pete brought me home. To bed about 11:30.

My comments: We are beginning to see some the activities her mother does at home that Eileen doesn't write about. These were things that needed to be done, while her parents were out of town. Interesting sets of activities.

Here is the short entry for Friday, June 18: [bold]

Ironed and took bath. Pete came at nite. Rained & we were stuck on Ollie Bett's road. Walked home barefooted. Pete home in Chevy.

Here is the long entry for Friday, June 18: [bold]

Cloudy & cool. I ironed all afternoon & washed a few things. Took a bath & waited for Pete. Finally went & met him the Chevy. Went up town. Saw Edith, Harold, Don & Jean. Started out on Ollie Betts road. It started to rain, so we tried to turn around. Got in ditch. What a time we had trying to get it out. Set in the car while it rained. Finally walked home. I was bare-footed. Pete went home in our Chevy. What a nite.

My comments: Well, what a fine kettle of fish! Young folks. Always getting in trouble, right? Sometimes hard to remember he was 22 and she was 18 years old.  ;-)

Where was Ollie Betts road? They'd been using it too much lately!  ;-)

Here is the short entry for Thursday, June 17:

In to town in am. Nearly ran in to Thurlow Jewell. Folks in Nebraska. Washed in pm. Leo took a shower. Wrote letters. Really sleepy.

Here is the long entry for Thursday, June 17:

Keen day. Up at 7:30. Got breakfast, did dishes, straightened up the house, & went to town just before Noon for groceries & ice. Nearly wrecked coming home by Grace Carpenters. Card from folks in Nebraska. Washed after dinner till 5:30. Really tired. Ate early. Late with the milking. Leo took a shower & I wrote letters. Really sleepy.

My comments: Well, some updates and corrections to my assumptions, I see. It appears the Buzz went with Paul and Dorothy, and they went to Nebraska, not Illinois, for Paul's vacation this year. Leo and Eileen at home. Eileen apparently done at Brownings. Wonder if the painting and wall paper was to sell the office? or she just not working there? or he on vacation as well? Time will tell, I suppose!  ;-)

Rainy. Ironed. Helen J. & Edith over. Went skating. Was with B. Boots when Pete came in. Mad? Ate ice c. at pool with Helen & Elmer. Sat on sidewalk. Enjoyed being together.

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, June 16:

Up about 7:00. Got breakfast, did dishes & separator & straightened up the house. Rainy out all day. Leo didn't plow. Ironed in pm. Helen J. & Edith Lund here awhile. Got supper, did up milk chores, wore slacks skating. With B. Boots when Pete came in Was he angry! He & Elmer & Helen & I got ice cream & ate at swimming pool. Got mud all over wind shield. Pete & I finally talked things over. Said he like me too well. Spoiled, jealous. Keen time after we got home. [one full line of short hand] Sat on sidewalk till 2:00. Just naturally enjoyed being together.

My comments: Have quite a time don't they? Young love in bloom, for sure. Fun to watch.

"Talked things over…" always works, if they can just keep getting to there… Loved that last sentence!  ;-)

Worked all day. To town in morning for groceries. Went to Band Concert. With Helen. Had an awful time getting the ice cream we wanted.

Here is the long entry for Tuesday, June 15:

Up at 6:00. Had bacon & eggs. Did dishes, separator, & scrubbed porches & separator house. Washed kitchen wood work in pm. To town with cream & got groceries & the paper. Got supper, did dishes & we went in to band concert. I with Helen. Tried 3 times to get the ice cream we wanted. Rode in H. Johnson's new car. Home at 11:00.

My comments: Assume Leo is at home. Don't know yet if Bussy went to with folks with or stayed home. She still isn't working at office, it seems.

Bacon & eggs. Oh, wow... my saliva is running. Yum! Yum!  ;-)

Really worked all day. Mowed lawn. Sat out on lawn. Wish Pete were here.

Here is the long entry for Monday, June 14:

Keen day. Got breakfast, did separator & went to town after groceries etc. Home at 11:00. Did dishes, got dinner, did dishes, hoed flowers, mowed lawn, weeded cabbages, got supper, sat out on lawn. Really nice out. So still & not too hot. Wish Pete were here. I feel like I need him tonight!

My comments: "I feel like I need him tonight!" Isn't that neat!  ;-) Not even in short hand!!  ;-)

Doesn't sound like like she had to work - was at home and around all day. Interesting to see how she saw herself with out her folks there! At least I'm assuming, at this point.

First mention of cabbages, second mentions of flowers.

 75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - June 13, 1937

This entry is the daily post on this blog from the diary of eighteen year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date.

Since midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.

Here is the short entry for Sunday, June 13: [bold]

Ironed all pm getting ready for folk's trip. Took bath at Mrs. Henrys. Went to Swing Hi - Swing Lo at Bayard. With Helen, Elmer, Don A.. Ate 2 qts ice cream in the Park.

Here is the long entry for Sunday, June 13: [bold]

Up at 7:30. Got breakfast, did dishes, separator, & got dinner. Ironed all afternoon getting ready for trip. Went in to Mrs. Henry's & took a bath. Home at 7:00. Pete came at 8:00. Went to "Swing Hi- Swing Lo" - at Bayard. With Helen, Elmer, Don. Pete mad because Helen & I rode with Don. 2 qts of ice cream in the Park. Home early. (1:00)

My comments: Lots to comment on, today. The "folk's trip" must mean they were going to Illinois again. Every year in July, her Dad, Paul, would visit the his Kinnick relatives (his dad's family, cousins, etc.) who still lived in Buda, Bureau County, Illinois. He had done it for years. Sounds like only Paul and Dorothy going this year. They also sometimes stopped mid-way at cousins in eastern Iowa.

Why would she go "to Mrs. Henry's & took a bath" - this one really confuses me. She took a bath a home, regularly??

Why did she and Helen ride with Don? Why not with Pete and Elmer, their 'boy friends?'

Swing High, Swing Low was a 1937 film starring Carole Lombard and Fred MacMurray.

 75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - June 11, 1937

This entry is the daily post on this blog from the diary of eighteen year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date.

Since midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.

Here is the short entry for Friday, June 11:

Keen day. Stayed home in pm. Washed in pm. Helen & Elmer over home. Waited on Pete till 9:00. Gene Pieper dance at Carroll. Keen time.

Here is the long entry for Friday, June 11:

Keen day. Still painting the store. I had the cleaning up to do after Patch papered. I home to dinner. Dad didn't. Didn't come to work in pm. Paint so strong & there wasn't any work to do. Finished my dress & ironed & washed all afternoon. Lyle & Burdette for supper. Loaded pigs. Took bath. Elmer & Helen over home about 8:30. Waited till nearly 9:00 on Pete. Danced to Gene Pieper. [half dozen shorthand strokes] Danced with Pete, Elmer, Don A.. Lee Davidson, Cla. Reisberg, Ed Kult. Had a keen time. Watched specialty at city club & then to Lincoln. [two full lines of shorthand notes finish the page]

My comments: Lyle, 20, Burdette, 13, first cousins (sons of Paul's brother, Robert Kinnick, from Bayard), came to help load hogs it appears. Hogs were hopefully a cash crop, those that weren't butchered for meat for the family. Hogs were $10.30 per hundred pounds in June of 1937, up from May.
Beatrice (NE) Daily Sun had article mentioning the Gene Pieper dance band on both June 8 and 15 of 1937!

The pigs for sale might have looked a lot like these:

Keen day out. Came to work early. Frank Patch papering, Joel Buckley & CCB painting outside. I had a big job writing up Burgan inventory. Helen B. with me in pm. Home at 5:00. Worked on my dress till 9:30. Curled my hair & went to bed.

My comments:
Busy day at the office!  ;-)

I don't really suppose this lawyer's office looked like this 2003 Gentleman's Lounge when they got done hanging the wall paper, but the photo under: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallpaper kind of fascinated me…  ;-)

 75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - June 4, 1937

This entry is the daily post on this blog from the diary of eighteen year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date.

Here is the short entry for Friday, June 4:

Typed. Abstract. Locked myself out. Up to Jean's awhile. Drove out to Pete's. He was planting corn. Went to bed early.

Here is the long entry for Friday, June 4:

Up till 7:00. Got breakfast in time, tho.' Did dishes & came to work at 9:00. Did some typing. Home at Noon. Typed abstract exam after dinner & then locked myself out till about 3:00. Up to Jean's awhile. Came back and typed till 5:00. Got groceries, stopped at Lund's & drove out to Pete's. He was planting corn. Stayed till 6:35. Was Mom mad! Got supper, did dishes, & went to bed early. Rained.

My comments: A two row horse pulled planter was one of several 'old implements' that sat in our Grove, north of the farm house, all the years I was growing up. It was one of my favorite 'playthings.' I  would sit on the seat, and put my feet in the circles the farmers did, to control something or other. I thought I was a big deal. Later, when we had the tractor and real farm work, I wasn't so impressed.

[This for sure is not Dad, but this is, for sure, what it looked like when he was planting corn!]
[This is a generic Iowa farmer in 1940 - certainly close enough!]

Interesting current note:
USDA expects U.S. farmers to plant corn on 95.864 million acres this year, up 4% from 2011 and above the high end of pre-report expectations. If realized, this would be the most corn planted since 1937′s 97.2 million acres, with USDA projecting record acreage in Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Here is the short entry for Wednesday, June 2:

Rained. Studied sh't hand. Leo & I in to town. B. Boots gave me 23 (cents) he owed me. Skated 15 min & Helen & I went down town. Home with Pete.

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, June 2:

Rained in the nite & some this morning. Did dishes & didn't get to work till 9:30. Did loss report. Home to dinner. Studied short hand awhile in pm. Edith here awhile. Did shopping & went home at 5:00. Got early supper, did dishes, & cleaned up. Leo & I to town. Helen & I to skating rink. Bud B. gave me the $.25 he owed me so I went skating for about 20 minutes. Then Helen & I down town. I went home with Pete. [3 full lines of short hand notes]

My comments: I am seeing a trend, that I like. Each Wednesday night she goes into town with someone. Usually goes skating a bit or longer. Pete shows up later in the evening, doesn't skate, but she goes home with him. Neat. I like that, as I said. An accommodation in the relationship!  ;-)
