Here is the long entry for Tuesday, August 31:

Went to bank nite with the folks. Home real early. Went right to bed.

My comments: She must have been tired listening to Mrs. Weaver talk, do you suppose? ;-)

Started staying at Mrs. Wever's. Slept on the front porch all nite. It's a nice place but she talks too much. Too bed early.

My comments: Assume this is Mary E. Weaver, 79, in 1940 U.S. Census, Widowed, born in Illinois, lived in the same house at 319-1st Street in Coon Rapids, Iowa, in 1935 (per Ancestry.com image).

Here is the short entry for Sunday, August 29:

Pete & Helen out home in pm. Over to Lund's. Rode around. Pete did chores. Helen & I made ice cream. She went to the show with us.

Here is the long entry for Sunday, August 29:

Did some washing & ironing. Pete & Helen out home. Went over to Lund's in pm. Rode in to town & back again. Pete home to do chores. Helen & I made ice cream. She was out home for supper. Went to the show with us. "Slim." Really good electrician show.

My comments: "Slim" was a 1937 movie starring Pat O'Brien and Henry Fonda. A farmer in Ohio becomes fascinated by a crew of linemen erecting transmission towers.

 [August 1, 1937, at Ledges]

Here is the short entry for Saturday, August 28:

Pete called from Lund's at noon. Grand to see him. Elmer sick so Pete helped at station at nite. Telling all about trip. Photograph Bk.

Here is the long entry for Saturday, August 28:

Pete called from Lund's at noon & I went over. Did it ever seem grand to be together again. Elmer was sick so Pete worked at the station until 9:30. Did shopping & we went home. Told all about the trip. Pete didn't say a word for 70 miles. Just like him. Brought me a keen photograph book.

My comments: Do you also sense relief that Pete got home, safe and sound? ;-)

Interesting to read that Pete worked at "the station" - that would be Lund's creamery station where folks brought their excess milk, cream and eggs - especially on Saturday night.

I have a related photo from a number of years later, but I am confident the process was still the same, since I do have memories of going to "Lund's station" with our produce on Saturday nights.

This photo has Dad on the left, beside the milk can, in the back of a truck. I don't know the others, and I don't know whose truck, but it fits with the story!  The truck is sitting in our driveway, our tank and barn in the background. The dog on the ground is our "Whitey" and that may be my next younger brother in the truck, the smaller one. If so, it would date this about late 1940s.

[I think this is the only photo of this period where I don't know who it is.
Happy to hear from viewer who think they can identify these neighbors!]

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, August 25:

Helen came after me at nite & we came in and saw "Wake Up and Live." It really was grand. Up to Old Settlers Picnic awhile. Cards from the boys.

My comments: Short and sweet!

"Wake Up and Live" was a 1937 Fox musical film directed by Sidney Lanfield and produced by Darryl F. Zanuck. The movie starred Walter Winchell (as himself), Ben Bernie and Alice Faye and was based upon the self-help bestseller by Dorothea Brande.

Here is the long entry for Monday, August 23:

Wonder where Pete is , what he's doing & if he's thought of me as I have of him. Up at 8:30 for a change. Just did the usual work. Leo & I to town after dinner. I went down to Mrs. Shavers. Saw Helen B. & Edith. Out to Lund's waiting for Dad. Wonder if Helen't balloon is still up. Home at 6:00. Ate & listened to radio & rode bike. Bussy in bed. To bed early.

Can't help wondering how Pete is. I hope & pray that they stay clear of any accidents!
Goodnite Pete!

My comments: Balloons left over from Spring Lake picnic, I'd guess! ;-)

Really concerned about Pete!  ;-)

[August 1, 1937, at Ledges]

Here is the short entry for Sunday, August 22:
We girls left for Spring Lake in our Ford at 1:00. Pretty good time. Back at 8:00. Went to "50 roads to town." Chased Morry & Tim. [Morrie Galloway and Helen Thomas I had written in, below]. Home at 11:00.

Here is the long entry for Sunday, August 22:

Up at 9:00. Did separator & cleaned the house. Leo wants to go to Wyoming. Getting picnic stuff ready. Cleaned up & left here at 1:00. Took buns & tomatoes. Edith L., Lenore, Helen J., Helen B & I took our Ford to Spring Lake. Skated and swam, took pictures all afternoon. Cooked wieners at community Kitchen. Telling jokes. Drove all over the Park. Back to Coon at 8:00. Cleaned up at Jensen's. Went to "50 roads to Town." Busted Balloons. Down to Park. Chased Morry G. & Tim Thomas. Home at 11:00.

My comments: "Fifty Roads to Town" starred Ann Southern. It was among the lowest ranked films of 1937… ;-)

Cool. To town at nite. Pete took Helen home. Boys go tomorrow morning. Hate to have Pete leave.

Here is the long entry for Saturday, August 21:

Nice & cool. Really a grand day. Up at 9:30. Cleaned the upstairs good before dinner. Did dishes & cleaned downstairs. Mom canned pickles. Took a bath, went in to town with Leo & Buag (sic). Buss to show. I with Helen J. & then Pete. Te took Helen home. I hid in Lund's car. We brought Bussy home. Back to town. Got buns. Talked to Elmer. They'll be gone for a whole week. Will I ever miss them. He says he'll have as good a time as possible without [a shorthand squiggle!].

My comments: Haven't said yet where the boys are going for a whole week.

"Mom canned pickles."

Rained some more again. Did I feel rotten. [Scratched out a short sentence] Did the whole ironing, canned more corn. Felt O.K. by afternoon. Got supper, took a bath & got ready for Pete. He came about 8:30. Out to Helen's. Elmer there, of course. Made candy & sat out on porch, danced in the kitchen. Home at 12:15. Only took about 5 minutes. In house at 12:30.

Did dishes, cleaned the house & then we went over to Lunds & into Lenore's. Planned our picnic. Boys will be gone. Home at 4:30. Ate & rode Bussy's bike. Read in bed. Didn't feel very good at nite.

Here is the short entry for Wednesday, August 18:

Rained again. Lil & Del here for supper. To town with Lunds. To "Lloyds of  London." With Pete. Did it rain. Wringing wet. In house at 1:00.

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, August 18:

Rained again. And again we didn't get to wash. I just did what had to be done again. Read & slept all afternoon. Lil & Del here for supper. Leo's & Dad's birthday. I rode bike over to Lund's in pm & went in to town with them at nite. Helen & I to "Lloyds of London." Really good. With Pete afterwards. Did it ever rain! Out home in Pop's car. Grand time. Just wringing wet.  - - - - - - - In house about 1:00.

My comments: Well, well. Was Pete's Dad's (Pop) car a little bigger? A little more room? or what? ;-)

Notice how 'big deal' was made of birthday's, again - NOT!  ;-)

"Lloyd's of London" was a 1936 American drama film directed by Henry King and starring Tyrone Power, among others…

Rained. Read "Gone With The Wind." Dad to School Board. Rest to Bk Nite. Crazy show. Greenwaldt $100.

Here is the long entry for Tuesday, August 17:

Should have washed but it rained like the Dickens. The boys & (I) went went (sic) in to town in the morning. Did some shopping & came home. Read "Gone With The Wind." Dad to School Board Meeting. Mom, Buzzy, Leo & I to Bank Nite. "Hotel Haywire." Kinda Crazy. Mr. Greenwaldt got $100. Right home afterwards. Buzzy had to soak his foot. [six lines of shorthand at bottom of page??!?!??]

My comments: Mr. Greenwaldt was one of the lead bankers - one that Buzzy (August Edward) was named after...  ;-)

 [August 1, 1937, at Ledges]

Here is the short entry for Monday, August 16:

Went to Old Settlers Picnic. With Helen. Saw Pete. Bussy got bicycle. Shower. Pete came. To celebration. Rode scooters. Took Bill home. To Daages dance. Home at 3:15.

Here is the long entry for Monday, August 16:

Hottest day ever. Just did necessary work. Had chicken for dinner. I went to Old Settlers Picnic with Dad & Bussy in pm. With Helen. Watched Ball Game. Just got a glimpse of Pete. Home at 6:00. Bussy got his new bicycle. Took a shower & cleaned up. Pete came at 7:30. I wasn't quite ready. To celebration. Listened to Band Concert. Rode motor scooters twice. To Leo Daages dance. Too blamed hot but had fun any way. Pete & I took Bill home. He'd been in town too long. Home about 3:15.

My comments: "Bill" of course is Pete's father. Family tradition has it that Bill 'didn't drink' during Prohibition, but 'returned to drinking' after it was over. Guess this was one of those nights. Not surprisingly, I grew up believing 'drinking' was very bad. Never tried a drop. Yet, even.

Eileen's brother, Edward, "Bussy" - "Buzzy," had a birthday, 9th, coming up on August 18. Got the new bicycle. Pretty big deal, for him, in that family!  ;-)

This is an ad for a 1937 bicycle like he got - it had the tank - actually, I got it in the late 1940s for my own, as I recall - it was in great shape. I have a photo or two... just not right at hand.

Here is the long entry for Sunday, August 15:

Up in good time. Washed my hair. Ironed a little bit. All alone for dinner. Listed to Thatcher Colt. Mex fixing fence. I wore shorts in to town & got ice. Made ice cream. Got linen dress ready to wear. Took a shower. Cleaned up. Called Pete's about 7:30. They just got back. Folks to Aunt Gers. [Gertrude Kinnick Brideson, near Bayard]. I laid on yard waiting for Pete. Went to "Slim." Home a little after 12:00. We're really getting good!

Home in P.M. Scraped corn, took shower; sure missed Pete in town. He went to Cedar Falls. Such a Saturday Nite!

Here is the long entry for Saturday, August 14:

Up at 6:30. Worked in am. Finished posting so didn't go back after dinner. Cleaned upstairs & down, scraped 2 crocks of corn, went after the cows. Took a shower, cleaned up & Bussy & I took Ford in to town. He to show & I just plain missed Pete. He's in Cedar Falls. Hope he's OK. Only 2 nites & I just can't wait to see him. What a Saturday nite!

My comments: Oh, young love!  ;-) I still remember the feeling… al these many years later…  ;-)

Here is the short entry for Friday, August 13:

Posted. Went to Carroll in P.M. Sheep shearer at home for supper. Took shower & went to bed early.

Here is the long entry for Friday, August 13:

Posted in the ledger all A.M. Pretty warm out. Man here sheering sheep. Chicken for dinner. Mr. Charles said I could have the afternoon off, so I went to Carroll, didn't tell anyone - and no one knows about it yet. Got my brown linen dress, hose & cosmetics. Home at 5:00. Sheep shearer here for supper again. Late with the dishes. Took shower, listened to First Niter & went to bed early.

My comments: Well, well. Aren't we acting independent - and still eighteen years old.

This confirms they had sheep, doesn't it. Think we had sheep mentioned once before. This is shearing time…

[There were some KINNICK relatives in Montana who were professional sheep shearers… I wonder if they knew about them… I doubt it, actually]

 [August 1, 1937, at Ledges]

Here is the short entry for Thursday, August 12:

Here is the long entry for Thursday, August 12:

Up early. Got breakfast. To work at 8:00. Cleaned the office & posted all day in the ledger. Got gum & ice cream & came home at 5:00. Helped with supper & dishes, got cleaned up. Pete had to wait on me again. My, my! Went to "Green Light." It's simply grand. Afterwards on Sherbring road. Really had a grand time. Pete's going to Cedar Falls Saturday. Back Sunday. Maybe going on Vacation with the boys. Got home early as Mom was stirring the dried corn. A grand evening! - - - - - - -

My comments: My, My! Indeed!  How nice…  ;-)

Cloudy. Ironed at nite. Listened to Hit Parade. Bud B. called.

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, August 11:

Really cloudy & dark when we got up. It really did rain. To work at 8:00, any way. Got money ready for first deposit. Home early at nite. Saw Adding Machine Man at the bank. ironed 'till 9:00. "Cherry Blosson Lane" first on Hit Parade. Bud Boats called when I was getting ready for bed. Why can't he leave me alone?

My comments: Does your bank look like this? A lot of them did in earlier days...

 [August 1, 1937, at Ledges]

Here is the short entry for Tuesday, August 10:

Warm. At work alone now. Really rushed. To Bk. Nite. "Holy Terror."

Here is the long entry for Tuesday, August 10:

Really about the warmest day we've had yet. I'm there all alone. Got along just fine. Last day to collect bills. Really were rushed. Everything happening in one day, as usual. Home at 6:00. I did dishes, took a shower. Leo & Buss & I to Bank Nite. Jane Withers in the "Holy Terror." A grand show with Tony Martin & Leah Ray.

My comments: The Holy Terror was a 1937 American film and a vehicle for child star Jane Withers; the film follows the comic adventures of 11-year-old Withers.

 [August 1, 1937, at Ledges]

Here is the short entry for Monday, August 9:
Pete's birthday. Leo introducing Grant as my brother-in-law. Verna's last day at work. To bed early.

Here is the long entry for Monday, August 9:

[Highlighted:] Happy Birthday, Pete.

Leo Watrous introduced Grant Ballard to Charles as my brother-in-law. Was I embarrassed!
Lot in paying their bills. Verna's last day at work. Got groceries at Frohlichs. Ate, did dishes, & took a shower. Looked at Catalogs. To bed early.

My comments: Grant Ballard would become her half-brother-in-law when she and Pete were married, of course. Grant was Pete's mother's son from her first marriage. Grant was born 2 Feb 1900, so he was already 37 at this time. Grant's father had died 30 Dec 1900 in an accident. Ella married Bill Smith in 1904.

This is Grant, from Irene's scrapbook [Thanks, again, Becki!]

"This is My Affair" was a 1937 crime film starring Robert Taylor and Barbara Stanwyck.

[August 1, 1937, at Ledges]

Here is the short entry for Saturday, August 7:

Sultry. Went to town after supper. Pete till 11:00 getting hair cut. home about 12:00. Something wrong.

Here is the long entry for Saturday, August 7:

Real close, damp & sultry after the rain. Busy all day. Quit early. Did shopping. Washed hair, cleansed up & came to town with Leo  & Buzzy. Took Pete till 11:00 to get his hair cut. I took Buzz home in his car. Irene with Merle & Pauline. We kids home about 12:00. Back seat full of groceries. Something wrong.

My comments: Have no idea what "Something wrong." means or refers to…  ;-)

First time I can recall Eileen mentioning Pete's oldest sister, Irene, in her diary. She was a school teacher out of high school; then worked in bank and insurance agency. Not sure exactly what she was doing in 1937. Probably still teaching at one room country schools.

I believe this is Irene's High School graduation photo... from her own scrapbook [Thanks to cousin, Becki!]

Hot. Cloudy. Verna gone last nite & she's tired again. I feel swell. Stormed at nite. Out to Harmon Riis field fire. Electrical storm.

Here is the long entry for Friday, August 6:

Hot again. Cloudy. Verna gone again last nite & she;s all tired again. I feel swell. Collecting yet. Rained in pm. An awful storm at nite. We drove out to Harmon Riis. Stubble field burned. Electrical storm in nite. Struck Alf Davis' barn.

My comments: Storms are always scary events… especially when lightning sets fires...

Here is the short entry for Thursday, August 5:

Hot. Tired. used Thomas adding machine. About went to sleep over it. Verna tired too. Went to bed really early.

Here is the long entry for Thursday, August 5:

Nother hot day. Was I ever tired. Used Thomas adding machine most all day. Most went to sleep over it. Verna tired too. Did up nite work & went to bed real early.

My comments:
Thomas adding machine - another new name at new work at Light Plant.

I could not find an image of a "Thomas adding machine" but I found stories of Thomas Office Machines in the 1930s - Thomas got laid off by Remington Rand Typewriter and started to make his own.

Here is a new 1937 Monroe Adding-Calculating Machine that likely replaced the one she was using...
