Would Leo have been using twine to shocked corn?? Twine around the middle keeps it up! ;-)

75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - September 16, 1937

This entry is the daily post on this blog from the diary of eighteen year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date.

Since midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.

Here is the short entry for Thursday, September 16:

Adding.  To Carroll in pm. Shopped & saw "The Road Back." Bed early.

Here is the long entry for Thursday, September 16:

Worked on the adding machine most of the morning. In pm. went to Carroll alone. Got new dress, shoes, purse, underwear, shoes, socks, & saw "The Road Back." Home about 6:30. Cold again. Had a late supper. To bed early.

My comments: She sound totally bored, to me. Yes, she listed shoes twice - did she get two pairs of shoes?  ;-)

"The Road Back" was a 1937 drama starring, among others, Slim Summerville, Andy Devine, and Noah Beery, Jr. Wikipedia says: "The novel on which the film is based was banned during Nazi rule. When the film was made, Universal Pictures was threatened with a boycott of all their films by the German government unless the anti-Nazi sentiments in the script were watered down."

IMDb says: "After World War I, a group of former German soldiers try to adjust to civilian life."

Noah Beery, Jr. (1913-1994)

Here is the short entry for Wednesday, September 15:

Took things home. Cold. Pete came. Watched show at Park. Hunting for twine. Home early.

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, September 15:

Ate breakfast at Mrs. Wever's. Out home to dinner and supper. Took all my things home. Really cold at nite. Washed by hair. Ate late. Pete came at 8:00. Watched picture show at Park. Got groceries, hunted all over for twine. Home early.

My comments: I have to wonder what kind of twine they were looking for and what it was to be used for. When I was growing up on the farm, twine was used in the hay baler, but I don't think that would have been the use that far back. Must have had something to do with harvesting, however. Any ideas?  ;-)

Up early. Pete & Ida here for dinner. To Lund's afterwards. Rode in Lund's car. Flat tire. Pete's stomach ached.

Here is the long entry for Sunday, September 12:

Up early. Cleaned the whole house & cleaned up myself. Pete & Ida Marie came for dinner. Went over to Lund's afterwards. Went riding in Lund's car. Had flat tire. Ate supper at Lund's. Home & cleaned up & in town to show. Pete's stomach ached from too much variety of food.

My comments: Ate dinner at Kinnick's place and then supper at Lund's place. Too much Danish food, sounds like! Or, simply too much! Her comments are most interesting. Even forgot to record the name of the movie…  ;-)

Last day to pay bills and were we ever busy as the dickens. Everyone came in. Went home from work late & went to bed early.

My comments: Good to see that Eileen is working at the Light Plant, again, first of the new month. We all kind of wondered about that… she had been silent, it seemed… just assumed. Pete obviously not much involved in farming, except for daily chores.
