My comment: A major blizzard for sure!

I seemed to focus in on the "3 layer gold cake!" Surprise!! ;-)

Sounds like a fun evening!

I always watch Hit Parade on television… wonder where I got that habit???
P.S. Think I listened on radio for years before on television, too. Kept a log of the "hits!" ;-)

This entry is a post from the diary of my mother, twenty year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date. She kept a diary from 1932 as a freshman in high school until she left us, too early, in 1999.
Now we are beginning 1939 - the year I was born, on July 1 - A doctor check up, today!  ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Wednesday,  Feb 22:

 Birthday note: Helen B.

Up at 8:30. Decided to go to Carroll. Had chicken & noodles. Folks here to dinner. Left for Carroll at 1:30 in folks' car. Dad & I to Annenberg's. Dad had his eyes fixed for glasses. I'm just keen only gaining too much. Shopped a little bit. Dad went and saw Art Minnich. Didn't get home until nearly 7:00. Pete chores & then we ate. Read paper, looked at catalogs and went to bed at 10:30. Really was tired.

My comment: Walter Annenberg was her baby doctor, of course. Good to hear things went well. Now sure about "Dad had his eyes fixed for glasses." Hope it was just an exam to select proper lenses… ;-)

Art Minnich was an attorney.

More catalog reading. Do you suppose they ever  looked as houses? Hard to imagine these were actually in the catalogs, for sale. But, actually very popular, I understand.

Here is the daily entry for Sunday,  Feb 19:

Up late. Did usual work. Pete cut the boar. Cleaned up & went in to town to dinner. Louises' & Rasmuses' were there too. Ate, did dishes, looked at pictures. Made pop corn balls. Home at 5:00. Getting colder. Stuffed bedroom windows with rags. Ate supper, Pete chores. Looked at catalogs and went to bed early.

My comment: I always wonder what "pictures" they looked at. There are so few taken around this time that have survived!
No more breeding with the boar... about to be sold, me thinks! ;-)

Here is a page from the 1939 Montgomery Ward catalog. Do you suppose she looked at this page? Pretty good chance, I think! ;-)

I scrubbed bedroom before dinner. Helped Saw wood. Cleaned rest of the house. Scrubbed the kitchen. Pete chores really early. Ate tomato soup. Took baths and Bussy & Pete and went to Sectional Finals. Coon beat Gray 33-23. Really some game. Sat with LVene and Verle. Down to Boehlers. Ed Kult and Edith Thomas sat with us. Home at 11:00.

My comment: A busy day. Never said what her Mom did all day… interesting.

Obviously very important "who they sat with" at events! ;-)

More wood sawed, now that the saw was back…  ;-)

Up late. Did the usual work. After dinner Peer [Yes, that is what it says! Could be Pelt!] came.
I pushed Pete in the Ford with the Chevy. In to town. Cableka [excellent, very special, mechanic in town… still there when I was a teen…] saw rite away what it was. Some little think - 10 cents. [Very typical response… amazing, for sure!]
Up home a minute. Pete got a hair cut. Took Pop's car up home. Home & chores. Ate, shaved, bathed and went in to Glidden - Coon ball games. Down home a minute. Home at 10:30.

My comment: No mention of any Valentine's Day recognition... Not part of their lives, apparently. Not too surprised at that! ;-)

Cars are great when they work. Frustration when they don't. Hope it is fixed! ;-)

Now we are beginning 1939 - the year I was born, on July 1 - Bring it on! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Sunday,  Feb 12:

Pete up at 8:00. Lots warmer out. Scrubbed the kitchen & cleaned dining room.
Had chicken dinner ready when the folks came. Pete worked on the car all afternoon. Folks went down to Rasmuses. I went out and watched Pete awhile. Ate supper & Pete milked while I did dishes. Read the Sunday papers and went to bed early.

My comment: Funny, as I read and transcribed this, the phrase "Pete milked" caught my attention, though she had used those words about every day. Dad did the milking all through high school. He always said that was why he had a car before most guys his age, because he had to finish milking before he could go in town to school. He told lots of stories based on that fact.

This made me wonder how many cows he had brought down from the Homeplace, and paid for the prior week. How many cows, how many pigs, etc. Fun to ponder!

Chicken dinner, something like this, I assume! ;-)

My comment: Her burnt sugar cakes were really good.

Pete milked while I did dishes. Took baths. Pete shaved. Went in to A.I.B. Typists vs. Coon girls & Van Meter Boys. Girls lost and boys won. Right home afterwards. Sat with Edith & Howard.

My comment: Boys basketball team beat Van Meter team. Girls basketball team lost to the A.I. B. Typists out of Des Moines.

Cutting more wood… got to keep warm!

I would love to have some white bread toast while the buns rise!! ;-)

I think these look like Mom's buns…  ;-)

Over home but they were to Aunt Lena's. Just laid & read all afternoon. In to town at 6:00 and got a rental battery. Ate, did dishes while Pete milked.

My comment: Not very thing is positive, here, all the time. ;-)

I've found the cold and bad weather has a lot to do with that, as well!! ;-)

Lena was Pop's sister - married to Burt Brown, lived on farm over north of Scranton. Here is a photo of them, about this time - and of her, at a younger age. ;-)

Pete up at 8:00. Me at 9:00. Did separator. Ate dinner, did dishes. LVene & Verle came after a load of corn. Pete had Verle help him saw a pile of wood. They stayed until 4:00. Took the cream in to town. Signed the note for $600.00. Home at 6:00. Ate tomato soup and Pete milked. Fixed our commode drawer into a file. We took baths, ate our oranges, and went to bed at 10:00.

My comment: Appears they had saved the other $600.00. Interesting, private, insights. Thanks, Mom! ;-) Wish I had a photo of Pete and Verle sawing a pile of wood.

Tomato soup is not glamorous, but tastes great on a winter evening.

Pete up at 8:00. Me at 9:30. In to town. Had Dwight open the locker for me.  Got some pork chops. Got the folk's Sunday paper. Ate, did dishes and went riding. Almost got stuck in one place south of town. Home at 4:30. Ate, Pete milked. Folks home from Leo's at 7:00; they stopped in just a  minute. Pete finished the chores. We popped some "corn." We each read a story and went to bed at 10:00.

My comment: A fairly typical Sunday. Except, she got her cousin, Dwight Williams, to open the town meat locker, so she could get some pork chops!

I really don't think they looked like this, but it was hard to pass by this image!!  ;-)

75 Years Ago Today - Eileen's Diary - Feb 4, 1939

75 Years Ago Today
Eileen's Diary
Feb 4, 1939

This entry is a post from the diary of my mother, twenty year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date. She kept a diary from 1932 as a freshman in high school until she left us, too early, in 1999.
Now we are beginning 1939 - the year I was born, on July 1 - Bring it on! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Saturday,  Feb 4:

Up at 9:30. Did dishes, separator, scrubbed & waxed the kitchen floor. Made a white cake. Jacobson here after oats. 2 loads. Pete got the wood saw. He was up home for dinner. Washed and set my hair. Had tomato soup for supper. Ed Kult came before Pete was through milking. Talked until 9:00. Did the rest of the chores. Were listening to Horace Heidt. Left the lamp and radian on until 3:00.

My comment:  Did the batteries run down? Sure would like to know what that "wood saw" looked like!!

Horace Heidt was very popular on the radio. I remember listening to him, as well.

Birthday note: Grant Ballard [39 - born in 1900]

Pete up at 7:30. Me at 8:30. Did separator & scrubbed. Ate dinner at 12:00. Did dishes. LVene came down & took us up  home. Pete & Pop took the Chevy to town. Polly, Betty, LVene & I came down here. Waved Betty's & LVene's hair. FInished the bench. Folks left at 4:30. Had potato soup for supper. Did dishes & made out the books. Took baths and then played 2 games of rummey. (sic) [Should be rummy!] Of course, Pete beat. Went to bed early.

My comment:  Dad didn't know about letting the "little woman" win! ;-)

Potato soup - I think Mom's would have looked like this... great for a cold evening! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Wednesday,  Feb 1:

Up real late. I made a 2 egg cake. Had pancakes for dinner. Cleaned the house a little bit. Pete cutting down trees along the creek. Chored and ate real early. Up and got LVene, Verle, Polly, Merle, Betty. Over the Max & Orrin's but they weren't home. Over to  Max & Orrins's. [She probably meant LVene and Verle's or Polly and Merle's!!]
Ate pop corn & played rummy until 12:00. Just got in Verle's yard and the car broke down. They bro't us home. LVene gave us a loaf of bread. Home & to bed at 1:30. Really cold and windy.

My comment:  Assume Dad was cutting trees for wood to keep the house warm!

A difficult evening, for sure. Dad has just worked on the car. Young couple with a serious problem, it appears. Very frustrating, for sure.

A 2 egg cake is also known as a pound cake:

YUM!
