Keen day. Stayed home in pm. Washed in pm. Helen & Elmer over home. Waited on Pete till 9:00. Gene Pieper dance at Carroll. Keen time.

Here is the long entry for Friday, June 11:

Keen day. Still painting the store. I had the cleaning up to do after Patch papered. I home to dinner. Dad didn't. Didn't come to work in pm. Paint so strong & there wasn't any work to do. Finished my dress & ironed & washed all afternoon. Lyle & Burdette for supper. Loaded pigs. Took bath. Elmer & Helen over home about 8:30. Waited till nearly 9:00 on Pete. Danced to Gene Pieper. [half dozen shorthand strokes] Danced with Pete, Elmer, Don A.. Lee Davidson, Cla. Reisberg, Ed Kult. Had a keen time. Watched specialty at city club & then to Lincoln. [two full lines of shorthand notes finish the page]

My comments: Lyle, 20, Burdette, 13, first cousins (sons of Paul's brother, Robert Kinnick, from Bayard), came to help load hogs it appears. Hogs were hopefully a cash crop, those that weren't butchered for meat for the family. Hogs were $10.30 per hundred pounds in June of 1937, up from May.
Beatrice (NE) Daily Sun had article mentioning the Gene Pieper dance band on both June 8 and 15 of 1937!

Since midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.

For 1937, the first entry available was for January 4. It was made in a multi-year diary format, so is short. Starting on January 5, there are two entries, one on the small format and a second is a full page entry. I suspect the longer entries were made later, when she got that book… there is no way to know, unless it shows up in the entries. This goes on for a couple of weeks. Let's see how it goes.

Real cold out. Played cards with 2 decks. Sent in some Shorthand. Pete, Leo, Ila Jean & Robert in store in pm. I did up dishes & listened to First Niters. Went to bed early. Talked about Dairy.

My comments: Ila Jean was the daughter of Robert, first cousin to Eileen - exactly two months older (14 Oct vs. 14 Dec). She married Louis Buhr in 1943.

I think Leo was thinking about possibly going to work for a Dairy, in a nearby town. We'll have to watch and see if that is what is was they were talking about.

I've been unable to find the Ila Jean photo, that is in my mind. I think it is her high school graduation. I did post of photo of Eileen and Ila Jean as 'almost' ten-year-olds. Also, Ila Jean's obit is posted.

Let's talk about the KINNICK-HERRON Connection

In mid-April I posted a note on the KINNICK-HERRON Potluck Reunion in Coon Rapids, Iowa, on June 12. Alonzo (Lon) KINNICK (1870-1923) and his wife, Nettie (1869-1936), had five children, two boys and three girls. Follow the last link to see all their children and grandchildren, briefly summarized, below.

Paul, the oldest son (my grandfather), married and had three children, a girl (my mother) and two boys. Robert, the other son, married and had five children, two sons and three daughters. The younger two girls each married and each had a  boy and a girl. From these four of the five children, then, there were 12 grandchildren, with only four boys carrying the KINNICK name.

Lucile, the oldest daughter of Lon and Nettie, married Wilson HERRON. They had 10 children, themselves, 4 sons and 6 daughters. These 22 grandchildren of Lon and Nettie became, the 'Kinnick Cousins,' as they called themselves (they had many, many gatherings, over the years); with each having a spouse, this group, alone, numbered 44 ... and there were some second marriages. It is the survivors of these 44 and their children and grandchildren (and great-grandchildren) that make up the 'pool' of persons for the June 12 reunion gathering.

In coming days, and weeks, I will be posting more information about this group of 'KINNICK family descendants' - this post will anchor those posts for the links above as useful details.
