This entry is a post from the diary of my mother, twenty year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date. She kept a diary from 1932 as a freshman in high school until she left us, too early, in 1999.


Here is the daily entry for Saturday, April 15:

Rainy out. In to town & got Mom & Buss. Pete disced until Noon, then sowed crick bank & spaded the poultry yard & sowed it. Cleaned pantry in pm & tended chicks. Really tired at night. Dad came our for supper. Ate, did dishes. Folks left at 9:00. Took baths & went to bed.

My comments:

They certainly seem to have earned the "Really tired…" Busy day of accomplishments.

Stepping back, a bit, let's remember the ages of the people mentioned here, today.
Dad Paul was 47; Mom Dorothy was 52. Buzzy was 11, Pete 23 and Eileen 20.

From March 1 thru April 29, I posted every day, to cover the marriage and the early married life of Pete and Eileen (Kinnick) Smith, but decided to 'take a breather.'  Resumed with Dec 1, 1938...


Here is the daily entry for Sunday, Dec 25:

Up late. Did chores, took baths. Folks here at 8:00 on the way to Leo's. Up to Smith's to turkey dinner. Had all the pictures taken. Pop gave me a keen end table, and individual ash tray & scarf. Pete got a saw & hammer from Merle. Home at 4:30. Did the chores, went in to the show. "You Can't Take It With You." Good. Up home tending to furnace. Home to bed.

My comments: Nice practical gifts. I like that!

From March 1 thru April 29, I posted every day, to cover the marriage and the early married life of Pete and Eileen (Kinnick) Smith, but decided to 'take a breather.'  Posts will be added, from time to time, as items of particular interest appear.

 

Here is the daily entry for Friday, May 20:

 Didn't get up very early. Pete up to the other place. Came home & did up the usual work. Planted 5 rows of beans, 1 peas, 1 beets and 20 rows onions. Went to town. Made out & sent order to M.W. Underwear, socks, dress material. Out to Lund's awhile. After Pete. Did chores, ate, went to bed early. LVene & Verle married at Carroll. Polly & Merle went with them.

My comments: Pete's sister LVene married Verle Thomas. They went to Carroll, much as Pete and Eileen had.

This image is from the Smith family history book LVene compiled with her sister Irene. LVene did not like to have her photo taken… so if she included this one, it must have met with her approval! ;-)


More planting in the garden. Pete had brought home the onion sets the prior day, from Smith's garden storage, I assume. The prior day, she had also subscribed to County Gentleman magazine, as well.

Here is the daily entry for Saturday, March 19:

Up late. Pete up to his folks place. I tried to erase the muss the crowd made last nite. Foot marks all over every thing. Pete stayed up to Smiths until 8:00. Ate late, cleaned up and went to bed. Pauline & Merle up to Smiths Saturday morning when I took Pete up. Pete took a shower up there & then he had Pauline bring him home. I met them at Casperbaurer's. He'd been waiting for me. To Norma's shower at Erma Pfeiffer's in p.m. Had the car. Edith went with me.

My comments: Commentary a bit confusing, today, regarding timing of things they did. Interesting to me to see how they get along with the one car, now. Not sure what kind of car they had at this time.

She was obviously frustrated with the mess the people made coming in the night before… there must have been quite a few of them… on the new floor and rugs they had put down.

I don't think they had a vacuum cleaner of any kind…  ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Monday, March 14:

Up at 8:00. Bussy has a bad cold. Stayed in bed. I went to the farm at about 10:00. Had an order for curtains to mail, and ran down a pint of floor paint. Pete had just gotten there. Pete gave south bedroom a 2nd coat. I gave kitchen walls a 3rd coat. Over to Smiths to dinner. Betty & I did dishes while the others voted. LVene helped us in the pm. She finished papering the kitchen & pantry. Painted the living room floor once. Home at 7:00. Lillian came & she & I went to hear Mario Copelli. Cleaned up & to bed.

My comments: I enjoy hearing the names of the different room they were working on. I only know of one or two photos I have of this house, and they are outside, of course, and I am in them, so it is about a year and a half later. But, I cannot come across those photos… oh, well. Perhaps later.

A Kitchen Pantry today; did it look the same or different 75 years ago today?

Here is the daily entry for Sunday, March 13:

Up at about 7:30. Did up the work & went down to our place. L'Vene, Irene & Pete & I. To Smith's to dinner. Toots there, too. Down to the farm again. Papered the separator room, gave kitchen woodwork a 2nd coat, painted the two bedroom floors once. Home quite late. LVene & I took bath in the front room. Had pop corn. Made out an order for curtains. While Pete took a bath. Bro't Irene to town at 9:30. Home early for once.

My comments: I detect a slight change taking place in their lives with this work on the house. I am fascinated with the high involvement, now, of his siblings. Very nice. Some facts as reminders:
Each are still single:
Toots, 31

Pete, 22
Their Dad still lives there.
Pauline and Max are both married.
Was Betty, age 18, there, or was she gone off to school… good question.

Down at the plant awhile in morning. LVene, Pete & Albert came for me. Moved the stove out to the farm from next door. Quite slick out. Didn't do much in morning. Over to Smith's for dinner. Back to work again after dinner. Scraping off paper & Pete plastering. Over to Smith's to supper. Bro't LVene in to get her hair cut. Drove around till 10:00. Pete bro't me home & then LVene. Quite tired. Felt like I'm catching cold.


My comments: LVene was Pete's sister, 28, not yet married (that occurred May 1938 - 2 months off) - I do not know who Albert was, at this point. Did he sell them the stove perhaps? Or help hook it up?

Do you suppose the stove looked at all like this 1938 stove?

Here is the short entry for Saturday, August 7:

Sultry. Went to town after supper. Pete till 11:00 getting hair cut. home about 12:00. Something wrong.

Here is the long entry for Saturday, August 7:

Real close, damp & sultry after the rain. Busy all day. Quit early. Did shopping. Washed hair, cleansed up & came to town with Leo  & Buzzy. Took Pete till 11:00 to get his hair cut. I took Buzz home in his car. Irene with Merle & Pauline. We kids home about 12:00. Back seat full of groceries. Something wrong.

My comments: Have no idea what "Something wrong." means or refers to…  ;-)

First time I can recall Eileen mentioning Pete's oldest sister, Irene, in her diary. She was a school teacher out of high school; then worked in bank and insurance agency. Not sure exactly what she was doing in 1937. Probably still teaching at one room country schools.
