May 9, 1939

This entry is a post from the diary of my mother, twenty year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date. She kept a diary from 1932 as a freshman in high school until she left us, too early, in 1999.


Here is the daily entry for Tuesday, May 9:

Up in good time. Max here from 9:00 to 10:00. Pete planting. Ate dinner, did dishes, up home a minute, over to LVene's, in to town & got plow lathes. Betty, Polly, LVene here to get their hair fixes. Max, Gary, Norma here too. Had to get a setting hen from Norma. Out to chicken house when Edith Lund & Harold Johnson came. Harold milked 2 cows. Ate, took baths & went to bed.

My comments:

Lots of folks in and out during the day…

Harold milked 2 cows… with Pete?? I assume…

Needed one more setting hen??? Too many eggs? Just got new chicks, not eggs. ???

Did up the work and then went over to Lund's to help them with threshers. Edith, Lenore, Erna & I. Home at 5:00.

My comments: She didn't have to host the thresher's dinner, but she did go help her friends as they did. Ah, the memories! ;-)

 Beef steak, macaroni salad, peach pie & ice cream. Max, Polly, LVene, Betty & Edith all here for dinner. Sat around and talked until late.

My comments: Notice she got right to the menu.

Seemed to enjoy the "talked until late" the most!  ;-)

Threshers again. Meat loaf, macaroni & cheese, spuds, gravy, peach pie & ice cream. Thought I was through but have them again tomorrow so I went in to town and got the groceries.

LVene, Betty, Edith again.

My comments: Did she sound really excited about tomorrow, to you? NOT! City girl learning the ways of the farm wife, for sure!! ;-)

Her meat loaf was really good. Lots of starch with both SPUDS and Mac and cheese… yum! ;-)

Up early, Did usual work. Up after LVene. Betty fixed her p. roast up there. Wouldn't go in my oven. Edith L. came over. Got along just fine. Potatoes, gravy, p. roast, baked beans, beet pickles, combination salad, ice cream & cake. Sat & talked after dinner. Took LVene & Betty home. In to town.

My comments: She does not say how many they fed… how many do you think would be typical?

Threshing will continue at different farms for several days…

Do you have a good photo of threshing oats in 1938? I'd love to see it!  ;-)
