Here is the daily entry for Wednesday, July 26:

Pete threshing at Laurensen's & Herron's. Washed my hair. In town to dinner. Clyde & Delma's came. Home at 4:00 & cleaned my house a little. Pete came at 7:00. Chored & all the folks came out for a few minutes & then went down to Rasmuses. Cleaned up & went in to town until 11:00. Home to bed.

My comments:

Delma was another sister of Dorothy, Eileen's Mom. Clyde and Delma were uncle and aunt. They lived up near Sioux City… eventually went to California for rest of they lives.

Here is the daily entry for Monday, June 19:

Really nice out. Rained a little in morning. Pete cleaned out the cow barn. I did usual work. Pete picked up stuff in back yard. Ate, did dishes, went in town awhile. Got groc, paid tel. bill etc. Went up home. Got a big pail of cherries. Home at 6:00. Chored, ate, planted some watermelon & sweet corn. Sat on back porch 'til 9:30.

My comments:

They seemed to enjoy a day of rest from farm work with the wet fields. ;-)

Trying to get my arms around "a big pail of cherries!"

NOTE: A couple days late, but this was in the Coon Rapids Enterprise[dated today] - Grandma Kinnick's sister, Louise, Mrs. Rasmus Nielsen, lived south of Coon and Bayard:

Here is the daily entry for Monday, May 29:

Mom did the washing. I made a batch of jell & a gold cake in the morning. Ate dinner. Took Pete over on 80 & went in and ironed. Louise and 4 kids were there.
Over after Pete at 5:00. Home, chores early. Little lamb died. Ate & went out & weeded the potatoes. Folks came & we sat on the porch & talked until 10:00. To bed.

My comments:

Good opportunity to share this photo of Rasmus and Louise and their family, from a few years later. Judy wasn't yet born, but the others around Louise would be the four: Annie, Winona, Marie and Darrell.

Rasmus and older sons, Howard and Karl are in the back. I assume Paul was in the service when this was taken. Howard was, as well, but home on leave, as I recall other photos from this day.
[Louise was a sister of Dorothy, Eileen's mother, of course. Rasmus and Louise lived along the Raccoon River, south of Bayard, in Guthrie County]

This entry is a post from the diary of my mother, twenty year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date. She kept a diary from 1932 as a freshman in high school until she left us, too early, in 1999.
Now we are beginning 1939 - the year I was born, on July 1 - Bring it on! ;-)


Here is the daily entry for Sunday,  Feb 19:

Up late. Did usual work. Pete cut the boar. Cleaned up & went in to town to dinner. Louises' & Rasmuses' were there too. Ate, did dishes, looked at pictures. Made pop corn balls. Home at 5:00. Getting colder. Stuffed bedroom windows with rags. Ate supper, Pete chores. Looked at catalogs and went to bed early.

My comment: I always wonder what "pictures" they looked at. There are so few taken around this time that have survived!

No more breeding with the boar... about to be sold, me thinks! ;-)

Here is a page from the 1939 Montgomery Ward catalog. Do you suppose she looked at this page? Pretty good chance, I think! ;-)

From March 1 thru April 29, I posted every day, to cover the marriage and the early married life of Pete and Eileen (Kinnick) Smith, but decided to 'take a breather.'  Resumed with Dec 1, 1938...


Here is the daily entry for Monday, Dec 19:

 In home at 10:00. Pete to Toots' cutting wood. Down town & mailed orders. Over to lite plant a minute.
Did the washing before dinner.
Louise & Rasmus, Annie & Karl were there for dinner. Down town & looked around in the afternoon. Had pigeon for supper. To bed early.

My comments: Notice that she still regularly refers to her parents' home, in town, as "home."

Up at 5:30.  Made cake. Wk at 8:00. Men making hay. Took bath, sewed. Louises here. Bed early. Leo & Ida swimming.

Up at 5:30. Made chic. cake, got breakfast & was at work at 8:00. Really got a lot done. Chicken dinner. Men making hay. Did work up early, took a bath, sewed upstairs. Louises here. To bed early. Leo & Ida swimming again.

My comments: Louise and Rasmus visited. Their son Howard was helping with the hay making yesterday, so likely also today.

Rasmus & Howard here for dinner. Mowed lawn & weeded flower beds. Buss & I in to town at 5:00. Went to bed at 8:30.

Up at 9:15. Finally getting rested from the week end. Did dishes & separator. Mom washed. Rasmus & Howard there for dinner.  Mowed lawn & weeded flower beds after dinner. Buss & I to town at 5:00. Got supper, did the dishes, & went went (sic) to bed about 8:30.

My comments: Here is Rasmus and Louise (Sorensen) Neilsen family. Rasmus and Howard are the two men on the left. Photo from perhaps 1943 or so.
