75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - Dec 1, 1938

From March 1 thru April 29, 1938, I posted every day, to cover the marriage and the early married life of Pete and Eileen (Kinnick) Smith, but decided to 'take a breather.'  Between April 29 and Auguts 29, posts were added, from time to time, as items of particular interest appeared.

Here is the daily entry for Thursday, Dec 1:

Pete up to Toot's & XXX? home all day. I ironed all pm. Scribbed separator room floor.
Pete just finished the chores when LVene & Verle came
Brought 2 bu. walnuts.
Played cards 'till 12:00.

Lillian's boy Dennis Kinnick [Ford] born at St. Anthony's at 7:15.

My comments: Welcome to the world, Dennis!
Got 2 bu. walnuts - played cards until midnight… what more could one ask?

Ironed all pm getting ready for folk's trip. Took bath at Mrs. Henrys. Went to Swing Hi - Swing Lo at Bayard. With Helen, Elmer, Don A.. Ate 2 qts ice cream in the Park.

Here is the long entry for Sunday, June 13: [bold]

Up at 7:30. Got breakfast, did dishes, separator, & got dinner. Ironed all afternoon getting ready for trip. Went in to Mrs. Henry's & took a bath. Home at 7:00. Pete came at 8:00. Went to "Swing Hi- Swing Lo" - at Bayard. With Helen, Elmer, Don. Pete mad because Helen & I rode with Don. 2 qts of ice cream in the Park. Home early. (1:00) 

My comments: Lots to comment on, today. The "folk's trip" must mean they were going to Illinois again. Every year in July, her Dad, Paul, would visit the his Kinnick relatives (his dad's family, cousins, etc.) who still lived in Buda, Bureau County, Illinois. He had done it for years. Sounds like only Paul and Dorothy going this year. They also sometimes stopped mid-way at cousins in eastern Iowa.

Why would she go "to Mrs. Henry's & took a bath" - this one really confuses me. She took a bath a home, regularly??

Why did she and Helen ride with Don? Why not with Pete and Elmer, their 'boy friends?'

Swing High, Swing Low was a 1937 film starring Carole Lombard and Fred MacMurray.

For 1937, the first entry available was for January 4. It was made in a multi-year diary format, so is short. Starting on January 5, there are two entries, one on the small format and a second is a full page entry. I suspect the longer entries were made later, when she got that book… there is no way to know, unless it shows up in the entries. This goes on for a couple of weeks. Let's see how it goes.

 Here is the short entry for Sunday, January 10:

Road open. Still cold. Cleaned the house. Buss [Buzzy] & I went to Liebs [She added a note, off to the top: Lieb was Clark Lee's uncle & they were bachelors. He probably left the farm to Clark.] & slid on his hill. More fun. Pete came at nite. "Anthony Adverse." Swell! Out home in kitchen. Leo came. Pete & I put V-8 in garage.

Here is the long entry for Sunday, January 10:

Slept rather late. Cleaned up the house & went out doors & over to Leib's. Really swell out. After dinner Buzz & I went sliding over on Leib's hill. Had the keenest time. Made cheese sandwiches & cleaned up. Pete came about 7:30. Went to "Anthony Adverse." Really was good! Out home afterwards. Had to put V-8 in garage. Had keenest time!


My comments: In the late 1940s and into the 1950s, Clark Lee was my barber in Coon Rapids. He was married then, to one of Mom's friends. Real nice guy. Don't know that they had an children, come to think of it…  ;-)

Interesting that 'putting the V-8 in the garage' - after the snow storm was over, could be the "keenest time!" Wonder what they were really doing, in the car? 18 and 21 years old…  ;-)

Still cold but not so windy. Outdoors & down to river. Got cars started & road open. I took V-8 and Leo took Chevy to town. With Pete quite awhile. Home with Dad. Listened to radio. Bed early.


Here is the long entry for Saturday, January 9:

Sun shining & getting nicer out. Reisberg & Shawd got road open. Dad walked in again. Leo drove Chevy & I drove V-8 in town in pm. Saw & sat with Pete. "Reason girls go with him is because he has so much money." Rode home with Dad. Did dishes, listened to Kate Smith on Sealtest Hour. About froze coming down the lane.

Here is the short entry for Friday, January 8:

Dad walked to town. I didn't go to work. Lots of snow. Roads closed. Cleaned up house. Got cobs, wood, & water out doors. Cleaned library drawer. Did dishes & listened to "Nite for Murder."


Here is the long entry for Friday, January 8:

Snow really deep. Kept up all nite until about Noon today. Dad walked to town. Charlie called & said I needn't come in to work. Cleaned up the house & went out doors & did chores & looked around. No cars through all day. Dad walked home. Nearly frozen. Listened to First Nighters, did dishes, & went to bed early. Mom lots better. Really cold up stairs.



My comment: Could not find a "Nite for Murder" 1937 Radio show link; Oh, well - I'm amazed at how many I do find!  ;-)

Dad & I got breakfast. Mom lots better. Terribly slick & snowing. Ate in town. Sent in 21-22-23. {She added note: shorthand lessons to Commercial Extension Omaha}. Studied at bank. Home in V8. Colder than ___. Listened to Rudy, Maxwell House & Bing Crosby.


Here is the long entry for Thursday, January 7:

Coldest it's ever been this morning. Mom stayed in bed. I had to get up & get breakfast. Almost didn't get around one corner. Slid in ditch taking Buzzy to school house. Erna & Behren's kids rode with us. Dad & I rode home at nite. Snowing on top of ice. Getting deep & drifting. Did dishes & listened to Rudy & Maxwell & then I went to sleep on cot. Really cold.

For 1937, the first entry available was for January 4. It was made in a multi-year diary format, so is short. Starting on January 5, there are two entries, one on the small format and a second is a full page entry. I suspect the longer entries were made later, when she got that book… there is now way to know, unless it shows up in the entries. This goes on for a couple of weeks. Let's see how it goes.

Here is the short entry for Tuesday, January 5:

Mom stayed in bed late. Studied shorthand. Wore ski suit. Not quite so cold today. Pete came down to store awhile in p.m. We went to Bk Nite "Star for a Nite". Dad & Buzzy to games - Mom in bed.


Here is the long entry for Tuesday, January 5:

Awfully cold. I had to get breakfast. Mom stayed in bed 'til late. Little warmer at Noon. Aunt Lil was in.  Had her hair cut and set. Looks so differently. Got 21 ready in Shthand. Charlie is going to either Arkansas or Louisiana! {she had underlined} Pete here in pm for awhile. Curled Bertha's hair. Skating rink men talked to me awhile. Edith and i started home with Edith R. Her car broke so we started walking & Orville picked us up. Did separator, ate, did dishes, and Pete came & we went to Bank Nite "Star for a nite." Really good. Went right home Sat outside in the car till 11:00.
