 75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - March 8, 1937

Since midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.

For 1937, for most days, there is both a short entry in a multi-year diary and a longer entry in a an appointment book like her diaries of past years. There is some indication the short entries were made later based on the longer entries. We still do not really know for sure.

Here is the short entry for Monday, March 8:

Up at 8:00. Ate at Martins. To work at 9:00. Got out Used Car Sheets. Don't like it any too well. To lunch at Sugar Bol with Lou & Charlotte. Lou getting shoes. Awful draggy pm. Nothing to do. Wrote and mailed letter to Pete & the folks. 6:00 finally came. Ate at Martins. Took a bath. Decided to go home. Peck gave me 2.50. I told him CCB called & wanted me back. He swallowed it. Don't like it a bit. Can hardly wait to get home. [Added later, arrow to CCB: C.C.B. is the lawyer, Charles C. Browning.]

Here is the long entry for a Monday, March 8:

Up about 8:00. Fixed my hair, ate breakfast at Martins' & went to work. Busy typing Used Car Sheets all morning & then ate at Sugar Bowl. Loafed all pm. Really got on my nerves. Mailed letters.  Real cold & windy. Went home at six, ate creamed chicken at Martins. Decided not to stay. About 9:00 went over & told him I was wanted here in Coon. He gave me $2.50. Kinda mad about it. Went to my room & took bath, played Sol. & went to bed. Really felt good about quitting.

My comments: Very interesting day. Homesick, mostly, in alien territory. "Coon Rapids" girl, through and through, over and over…  ;-)

Do you suppose the shoes Lou looked at looked like these?

Here is the short entry for Sunday, March 7:

Up at 8:00. Curled hair. Packed. Dad in town 'till 11:15. Left at 11:30 in V-8. ["for Storm Lake" added later] Real foggy. Got here at 1:30. Ate at Martin's, then Dad & I went to see Peck. Got room at Martin's for nite. Dad left about 4:00. Charlotte, Lou & I to "Wings of the Morning." Lunch at Presto's. Home at 11:00. Didn't sleep any too good! Yesterday seems a week ago & tomorrow a year. Oh, for Pete. [Added later, below: Peck owned a big car dealership & I was to be his Sec'y. but he kept pushing up against me.]

Here is the long entry for a Sunday, March 7:

 Up at 8:00. Washed & set my hair. Packed and left for Storm Lake at 11:30. I drove part way. Got there at about 2:00. Ate at Martin's & then over to the garage. Real nice offices. Tom Satterlee & Louise Larson there. Got Room 4 at Martin's. Real nice. At nite Louise, Charlotte & I rode in Chevy Coupe. Went to "Wings of Morning" and then ate lunch at Presto Cafe.

My comments: Quite an adventure for the home-town "Coon Rapids" girl. Storm Lake is 55 miles north of Carroll on US 71. What will happen when she goes in to work on Monday morning?

"Wings of the Morning" was the first Techicolor movie shot in the British Isles, featured Gypsies, horse racing, singing and romance in 1937. It starred Henry Fonda and Annabella.
