Here is the daily entry for Saturday, July 15:

Pete up home in morning but was home to dinner. Ila & I talked about Grandma etc. most all morning. Pete mowed the yard in afternoon & we went in town. Ila washed. I went down town. Had pop at Leo's. Shopped awhile, up home & ironed a bit & came home. Pete took team home & I went after him. Chored, ate, did dishes & then I took Ila Jean in to town. Got 2 Smoozies at Leo's & brought them home to eat. Fed baby & went to bed. Pete stayed with the baby.

My comments:

"Pete stayed with the baby." Wow, our first "separation!" Progress. How neat! ;-)

As a reminder, here is "Grandma" they are talking about - Grandma Nettie (Williams) Kinnick - quite a woman, according to her obit! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Friday, July 14:

Pete didn't get up until 7:00. Fed the baby. Bathed him. Did morning work. Washed my hair. Marget, Wilson Dale, Patty & LVene here awhile. Ila & I ate dinner alone. Rested. Dwight brought ice. Went in to wash. I went down to Leo & Ida's. Rasmuses came down there to see the baby. Up home & then went down town to do a little shopping. Home & got supper. Ila went to bed before Pete was through choring. Took baths & went to bed.

My comments:

Another full day. Not sure about that first list of visitors, but that is what she wrote… It is Margaret Thomas, with Wilson…oh, his full name is Wilson Dale Thomas… his sister, Patty. Margaret was LVene's sister-in-law… all neighbors, as well. Ok, figured that out! ;-)

Realizing I don't really know, for sure, where Leo and Ida lived at this time… seems to be on the south side of Coon Rapids, from Mom's expressed used to describe. NOTE: See News Articles, below!

Note that Ila Jean is staying at the farm house, with Pete, Eileen, and Billy… ;-)

This isn't actually Dwight delivering the ice, for the ice box they had (no refrigerator, because no electricity, yet), but it does show the block of ice like he would have brought!

75 Years Ago
July 7, 1939

Leo Kinnick of Bradgate, recently purchased the Tallcorn Inn off A.F. Tatman and took possession
this week. Mr. Kinnick is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul H. Kinnick and was raised in this community.
For the past few years he has been associated with his father-in-law, Ray Bell, on a farm near Bradgate.

My comment: This explains where they were living. Need to learn more about this!

“Ping” Herron, 15 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Herron, suffered severe head and chest
injuries Saturday when his team ran away with a hay rake he was operating, and he was dragged
underneath the machine. He was rushed to St. Anthony’s hospital at Carroll for treatment where he is expected to make a complete recovery.

My comment: This was mentioned one day in the hospital last week!

Coon Rapids and this part of the state really got soaked during the first week of July. Monday night
a deluge of about three inches fell here in a trifle over an hour and Tuesday night’s rain amounted to
approximately half that amount.
While the rain benefited crops it also did considerable damage in many places. Small grain was beaten down and corn blown over but the damage here was small as compared to bridges washed out in Audubon and Guthrie counties and elsewhere in the state.
The deluge gave the cinch bugs a decided setback. Corn is considerably advanced over normal for
this season of the year and much of it is beginning to shoot tassels.
Where it got sufficient rain in June the crop is excellent. Spots where the June rains missed don’t look
so good. The small grain harvest is well under way and shocks now dot many fields. The straw is
short but quality of the grain is reported as good. “It’s not so much the heat as it is the humidity,” everyone is saying and right now Iowa is experiencing an honest-to goodness hot spell.


My comments: Mom said it really stormed... Dad was late to the hospital one day, because of the storm... this was obviously it!! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Wednesday, July 12:

Overslept. Didn't get up until 6:30. Did we hurry. Junior helping bind again. Polly here a minute. Bathed baby. Ila did sep. & dishes. In town & washed. Home & got dinner for boys. Baby fussed awhile after dinner. Ila cleaned the house. Rested. Gertrude, Everett, Anita Carlson, John, Jeanette here just while we were eating. Lil & Del, Bertha, Warren, Roberta, Dennis came use as Pete got through milking. Left early. Bathed & went to bed.

My comments:

Baby not getting enough attention…  !!??!!  ;-)

Too many "guests," as well. ;-)

Binding oats, in the field...

Here is the daily entry for Sunday, July 2:

Really slept keen. They woke me at 6:00. Nursed baby again. He really is nice. [!!!!!!]
Washed up. Slept awhile again. ate breakfast at 7:30. Slept again. Put on clean top and bedding. Had a keen dinner. Rested after the baby nursed. Pete, the folks, Leo, Ida, Karen & lots of others here. Had a swell time. Ila Jean came after hours for awhile after the others had all left. Rested, ate, fed the baby at 6:00. Rested & read until Pete came. Helen, Josephine & kinds here a minute too.

My comments:

Think she is enjoying being "looked after" - what do you think?! ;-)

Lots of visitors… and it gets moreso, in coming days, at hospital… then at home… !!

Ila Jean Kinnick was Mom's first cousin, two months older… we'll be seeing her a lot in coming days, so here is her photo… assume this is high school graduation, three years earlier. ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Saturday, June 17:

I didn't get up 'till 8:00. Really hot & awfully windy. Betty, Polly & Jo came & had their hair set. They did the dishes. Folks came just as they left. Cleaned 2 bedrooms before dinner. Pete plowing beans on 80. Ate dinner, did dishes. Scrubbed kitchen floor & cleaned the rest of the house.
Mom & Dad worked in the garden awhile. Pete got through on the 80. Dad took me over after the car. Home. Chored early. Ate Sp. Rice. Did dishes. Pete shaved & we bathed & went in to town. Got a good parking space by Kitty's & Bertha's old place. Lyle sat with us awhile. Ed, Elmer, Orville, Erna, Lucille M., Ila Jean, Mrs Lund stopped & talked. Got groceries & came home about 1:00.

My comments:

Cultivating beans when it was "really hot & awfully windy" reminds of experiences on the farm, in my early years… didn't mind leaving that… though, at the time, it was just what we did! ;-)

Don't remember Mom ever mentioning Spanish Rice, before. Did it look like this??

Here is the short entry for Monday, May 24:

Ila Jean at office awhile. Rode around at 1:00. Out past Pete's. Jean & Vi [added later: Violet Lachenmaier] here awhile. Typed all pm. Folks & Leo went to Class Play. Bussy & I stayed home.

Here is the long entry for Monday, May 24:

Nice & warm but real windy & dusty. Ila Jean here awhile. Typed most of morning. Rasmus & Howard out home to dinner with Buzz & me at Noon. Brought them in & I rode around 'till 1:30. Out past Pete's but didn't talk to him. Jean & Vi here awhile. Took dictation & typed all pm. 'till after 5:00. Did shopping & we went home about 6:00. Got supper, I did dishes & all the milk pails etc. & the folks & Leo went to the Class Play. Bussy & I stayed home. Went to sleep on Studio Couch.

My comments: Still concerned about relationship with Pete, it appears. Seems ok. Another reminder that her Dad is a member of the School Board, so they do take in some school activities.

For 1937, the first entry available was for January 4. It was made in a multi-year diary format, so is short. Starting on January 5, there are two entries, one on the small format and a second is a full page entry. I suspect the longer entries were made later, when she got that book… there is no way to know, unless it shows up in the entries. This goes on for a couple of weeks. Let's see how it goes.

Real cold out. Played cards with 2 decks. Sent in some Shorthand. Pete, Leo, Ila Jean & Robert in store in pm. I did up dishes & listened to First Niters. Went to bed early. Talked about Dairy.

My comments: Ila Jean was the daughter of Robert, first cousin to Eileen - exactly two months older (14 Oct vs. 14 Dec). She married Louis Buhr in 1943.

I think Leo was thinking about possibly going to work for a Dairy, in a nearby town. We'll have to watch and see if that is what is was they were talking about.

I've been unable to find the Ila Jean photo, that is in my mind. I think it is her high school graduation. I did post of photo of Eileen and Ila Jean as 'almost' ten-year-olds. Also, Ila Jean's obit is posted.

Ila Jean (Kinnick) Buhr - Obituary

From the Coon Rapids (IA) Enterprise - Thursday, May 20, 1993

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 15 for Ila Jean Buhr, 74, of Bayard, who died on Wednesday, May 12, 1993 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Reverend Crystal Oberheu officated the 10:30 a.m. services from the United Methodist Church in Bayard. Martha Wolf served as organist.

Interment was in Highland Township Cemetery, Bayard. Serving as casket bearers were Steve Sheer, Robert Kinnick, Craig Kinnick, Kelly Sheer, Allen Kinnick and Mark Kinnick.

Ila Jean, daughter of Robert and Edna Pierce Kinnick, was born October 14, 1918 at Coon Rapids. She attended schools in Coon Rapids, Bayard, and Stuart, eventually graduating from Glidden High School in 1936.

Ila Jean attended beauty school in Des Moines, receiving her diploma in 1941. She worked in Des Moines until her marriage on July 31, 1943 to Louis Joseph Buhr. They made their home in Bayard and in 1951, she opened her own beauty shop. Ila Jean retired in 1991 after 50 years as a beauty operator.

Ila Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church in Bayard and the Bagley Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed reading, quilting, and crocheting in her spare time. Her family was of the utmost importance to her.

Ila Jean died on Wednesday, May 12, 1993 at Iowa Methodist Medical center in Des Moines, at the age of 74 years, six months and 28 days.

Besides her husband, Louis, who died on September 14, 1966, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Burdette Kinnick.

Survivors include her children: Pamela and her husband, Jim Rumelhart, of Waukee; Michelle and her husband, Charles Davis, of Des Moines; Melinda and her husband, Dwight Holbrook, of Stuart; Teresa Buhr, of Des Moines; and Haydn Buhr and his wife, Lynette, of Pauls Valley, OK; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; her brother and sisters: Lyle Kinnick and his wife, Marie, of Bayard; Gretchen Vaughan, of Bayard; and Betty and her husband, Howard Sheer, of Bayard; a sister-in-law, Ruth Kinnick, of Guthrie Center; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
