Here is the daily entry for Sunday, July 16:

Didn't get up till late. Folks came out. Pete was up home all day working on tractor. Had fried chicken for dinner. Scrubbed & waxed kitchen floor. Edith, Helen, Lenore here till 6:30. Folks went down to Louise's. Ate supper. LVene, Verle, Arnold, Julia came & bro't ice cream & cherry pie. Don & Norma came. They all left early because it started to storm. Fed baby & went to bed.

My comments:

You can bring "ice cream & cherry pie" any time - or, just the cherry pie… I'll provide the ice cream!! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Sunday, June 11:

Up at 7:00. Took Pete over on 80 to plow. In town & picked strawberries & peas. Up home a minute. Pete & I here alone to dinner. Pete plowed & finished field in pm. Didn't get home till 6:30. I made 5 glasses strawberry jam. Worked on d. room curtains. Ate supper & went in town & sat on the street. Talked to LVene & Verle & Ger & Everett a minutes. Home to bed at 11:00.

My comments:

I can see Dad wanted to get that field plowed… having gotten behind when he was hurt. No church, today… though, might have been Annual Conference, and not service???

Like to have some of that jam! Here are some strawberries just picked… you can make the jam!

Here is the daily entry for Thursday, June 8:

Pop & Junior came down in morning. Jr. finished planting the beans and Pete harrowed them in. In town & picked strawberries & peas. Pop, Jr, & Pete her for dinner. Had creamed new potatoes & peas. LVene & Verle came & stayed till 2:00. Did dishes. Pete finished harrowing at 4:00 & we went out in garden & planted cucumbers & a few more spuds. Chored. Eating when LVene, Verle, Arnold, Julia came. Sat on floor in dark and talked. Elmer & Don came. All left at 11:00. Right to bed.

My comments:

Nice that Dad got help finishing planting. Don't imagine he was real anxious to be around that horse again, soon. Why did EVERYONE stop by? Had they heard he was hurt??

"…creamed new potatoes & peas" sure sounded good!!

Pete up at 6:30. Did chores. Went to SS & church. Over to LVene's for dinner. Grant, Rita, Pop, Irene, Polly, Merle, Betty, LVene, Verle.
Pop is 70 yrs. old tomorrow.
Talked until 5:00. Home, chores, took washing in. Sat on porch & talked until after 10:00. Home to bed.

My comments:

A full family birthday dinner for Pop. Neat! [Oops! Max, Orrin & Gary not there...]

The never imagined it then, of course, but that was to be the last birthday for him. He died on October 8, 1939. This photo was about a year earlier….

Up in good time. Did usual work. Scrubbed out the chicken house. Read papers.
Pete came for dinner. Ate, I took him back to 80. Made out order of the baby & me.
LVene & Verle bro't back chairs. Curled LVene's hair. In to town. Mailed orders, got groceries, got 25 White Leghorns. Home & fixed chickens. Over after Pete. When we came home the hen had killed 17. Over to Norma's & got a hen to put with the 8 that were left. Pete chores, ate potato soup & went to bed.

My comments:

"Made out order of the baby & me."

Did she order stuff like this, do you suppose?

Really windy. Bussy, Mom, Betty & I took folks car to Carroll.
Left at 10:00. Mom got shoes & suit. I got shoes. Betty got her eyes tested.
I went to the Doctor. I'm just fine. Home at 4:00. Did up work. Ate supper, Pete milked, took baths & shaved. Took Mom & Bussy into town & then went up to Arnold & Julia's.
LVene, Verle, Margaret, Orel, Edith, Howard, Helen B., Elmer, Erna, Orville, Dick, Don, Kenny, Ramona M., Edith, Ed,  [space]
Played cards & ate hot dogs.
Home at 12:30.

My comment:

Busy day at Carroll. Positive results. BIG party in the evening.

 Birthday note: Orrin H.

Up late. Did usual morning work. Ate dinner, did dishes, making 4 holes chicken setter.
Read "The Golden Hills." Don and Norma here just before Pete chored. Want us to come to. S.S. party Wednesday nite [This sentence underlined].
Chored, cleaned up, LVene & Verle came and we went over to Max & Orrin's. Played cards. Had Angel food, chic. cake, Bavarian Cream, sandwiches, coffee. Home at 1:30.

My comment: Good food! ;-)

Suppose they go to the Sunday School Party on Wednesday??

Here is the daily entry for Monday,  Feb 20:

Up at 8:10. Mom called at 8:30 and said she had the washing all done. Had fried chicken for dinner. Made B.P. Biscuits, too. Pete up  home just before Noon. Ate and then read the paper. Did up my work while Pete went down to creek and chopped wood. To town at 4:00. Got freezer & the washing & Verle's socks. Pete milked while I made a gallon of ice cream. Cleaned up. Up to LVene's & Verle's to his surprise party. Max, Orrin, Polly, Merle, Betty, Howard there. Played cards and ate. Home at 2:30.

My comment: Verle's 28th birthday. Quite a busy day. They got him socks for a present and made a gallon of homemade ice cream to take along. Neat! I love when there is detail!! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Tuesday,  Feb 7:

 Pete up at 8:00. Me at 9:00. Did separator. Ate dinner, did dishes. LVene & Verle came after a load of corn. Pete had Verle help him saw a pile of wood. They stayed until 4:00. Took the cream in to town. Signed the note for $600.00. Home at 6:00. Ate tomato soup and Pete milked. Fixed our commode drawer into a file. We took baths, ate our oranges, and went to bed at 10:00.

My comment: Appears they had saved the other $600.00. Interesting, private, insights. Thanks, Mom! ;-) Wish I had a photo of Pete and Verle sawing a pile of wood.

Tomato soup is not glamorous, but tastes great on a winter evening.

Here is the daily entry for Wednesday,  Feb 1:

Up real late. I made a 2 egg cake. Had pancakes for dinner. Cleaned the house a little bit. Pete cutting down trees along the creek. Chored and ate real early. Up and got LVene, Verle, Polly, Merle, Betty. Over the Max & Orrin's but they weren't home. Over to  Max & Orrins's. [She probably meant LVene and Verle's or Polly and Merle's!!]
Ate pop corn & played rummy until 12:00. Just got in Verle's yard and the car broke down. They bro't us home. LVene gave us a loaf of bread. Home & to bed at 1:30. Really cold and windy.

My comment:  Assume Dad was cutting trees for wood to keep the house warm!

A difficult evening, for sure. Dad has just worked on the car. Young couple with a serious problem, it appears. Very frustrating, for sure.

A 2 egg cake is also known as a pound cake:

 Up in good time. Pete here all day. He fixed the car in the pm. I scrubbed the kitchen. A nice day. Mom did both of our washing. Ate and milked early. LVene & Verle came at 8:00. Talked. Played Rummey & Pitch.

From March 1 thru April 29, I posted every day, to cover the marriage and the early married life of Pete and Eileen (Kinnick) Smith, but decided to 'take a breather.'  Resumed with Dec 1, 1938...


Here is the daily entry for Saturday, Dec 24:

Up late. Chored most of the morning. In to town after dinner. Betty's locket came. Up home a minute. Home & chores. Up to LVene & Verle's. Over to Star church to program. Down home to see the new lights. Home late.

My comments: Well, here is the Star (Methodist) Church, to the corner west of Smith's homeplace and one mile north, on the NW corner of the intersection. Pop and his kids had been members for years. Fairly active involvement over the years. My Mom just beginning to get into that activity.

From March 1 thru April 29, I posted every day, to cover the marriage and the early married life of Pete and Eileen (Kinnick) Smith, but decided to 'take a breather.'  Posts will be added, from time to time, as items of particular interest appear.

 

Here is the daily entry for Friday, May 20:

 Didn't get up very early. Pete up to the other place. Came home & did up the usual work. Planted 5 rows of beans, 1 peas, 1 beets and 20 rows onions. Went to town. Made out & sent order to M.W. Underwear, socks, dress material. Out to Lund's awhile. After Pete. Did chores, ate, went to bed early. LVene & Verle married at Carroll. Polly & Merle went with them.

My comments: Pete's sister LVene married Verle Thomas. They went to Carroll, much as Pete and Eileen had.

This image is from the Smith family history book LVene compiled with her sister Irene. LVene did not like to have her photo taken… so if she included this one, it must have met with her approval! ;-)


More planting in the garden. Pete had brought home the onion sets the prior day, from Smith's garden storage, I assume. The prior day, she had also subscribed to County Gentleman magazine, as well.

Here is the daily entry for Sunday, March 13:

Up at about 7:30. Did up the work & went down to our place. L'Vene, Irene & Pete & I. To Smith's to dinner. Toots there, too. Down to the farm again. Papered the separator room, gave kitchen woodwork a 2nd coat, painted the two bedroom floors once. Home quite late. LVene & I took bath in the front room. Had pop corn. Made out an order for curtains. While Pete took a bath. Bro't Irene to town at 9:30. Home early for once.

My comments: I detect a slight change taking place in their lives with this work on the house. I am fascinated with the high involvement, now, of his siblings. Very nice. Some facts as reminders:
Each are still single:

Their Dad still lives there.
Pauline and Max are both married.
Was Betty, age 18, there, or was she gone off to school… good question.
