Here is the daily entry for Sunday, October 1:

Anniversary note: Lyle & Wilma married '38

Up at 6:30. Fried chicken, bathed Billy etc. & went to ch. & S.S. Stayed for coop dinner afterwards. Krenmyres were there. Home at 3:00. In to the folks. Don & Joyce, Leo & Ida were there. Home & cleaned the house a little. Pete chores. Ate, folks came out awhile after milk on the way to Rasmuses to get Buzzy. [She had written Bussy… added lines below the ss to look like zz!!]

My comments:

Big day at Star Church. Krenmyre was the new preacher of Methodist church in Coon Rapids and Star Churches - effective September 19 (he was there for two years).

Must have taken the Fried Chicken to the Coop Dinner! Yum! ;-)

Birthday note: Dad, Buss

Really sleepy. Slept till 8:00. Gave Billy his bath, did dishes, seperatar, Pete fixed mower tongue & mowed the road. Ate dinner, read paper, did dishes, fed Billy. Pete picked cucumbers & I  picked tomatoes with him. Fixed a batch of sweet pickles, bread & butters & tomato preserves. Folks came out while we were eating. They were going to Rasmuses after Buzzy. I went in town in pm. Got Bussy's present - 2 rolls of music. Up home a minute. Tired at nite. Wrote in books & went to bed.

My comments:

Mom… you really amaze me… Buss, Buzzy, Bussy… in the same writing…!!

Dad got the road mowed, finally. Neat…

Cucumbers and pickles, sweet and bread & butter… YUM!

Here is the daily entry for Friday, August 4:

Didn't get up until 8:15. Pop here awhile. Ate, bathed Billy, did dishes, sep, ate dinner & went in home & washed. Pete threshed our rye & then threshed for Fat. Bussy lots better today.
Lil, Del, Roberta, Dennis, Jennie, Bernie, Iva stopped in home in p.m.
Folks came out after milk & cream at nite. Had french toast for supper. Took baths & went to bed.

My comments:

Nice that Buzzy was getting to feel better, for sure.

Dennis would have been about 9 months old. Roberta near 5. Here she is at 2. Just too cute to pass by...

Quite hot all day. Pete laying by corn on 80. I went in town at 10:00 and did my ironing. Bussy home to dinner with me. Dad bro't Mom out after dinner. Did up usual work. Read awhile & embroidered. Had fried chicken for supper. Chored early & worked in the garden awhile. Folks left at 8:30. Pete & I sat on the back porch a little while, then bathed & shaved and went to bed.

My comments:

Don't think she was very comfortable. Very hot. If only she knew, just a few more days…  ;-)

More new fried chicken for all...

Did up usual work. In town. Got Bussy & groceries. He helped me sew curtains. Ate. Pete plowing. Finished curtains & started cot cover. Ate supper & went up home until about nine. Took Bussy in town & came home to bed at 10:00.

My comments:

Reminder, at this time, Buzzy was 10 - 11th birthday in August. Just a little older than our grandson, Alex.

Here is a photo of Buzzy with his class in Coon Rapids, undated. Looks to perhaps be a year earlier.

 Cloudy in morning. An awful wind and really hot. Pete finished harrowing in corn in morning. Ate, took Pete to work. Did dishes, read & slept and hour. To town at 4:00. Got ice. Buzzy came home with me. Over after Pete plowing soy bean ground. Home, chores, folks came out. Made ice cream. Pete shaved, we bathed and went to bed.

My comments:

I can just feel the hot and dusty day in the field.

Birthday note: Julia Hicks

Nice day. A little cool. Did separator and went in to wash. Through at 11:00. Down town & did the shopping. Did my ironing. Bussy sprained his ankle yesterday & was home from school. Got 50 day-old Buff Rocks. Home & fixed them up, fixed picnic lunch. Burned brush down by gate. Had wieners, buns, potato salad, beet pickles, marshmallows, cup cakes & coffee. In house again at 10:00. Pete read paper & I wrote in books & then to bed.

My comments:

Picnic two days in a row… spring must have arrived… ;-)

50 more baby chicks… Dad apparently liked his chicken and noodles… see entry in a couple of day… here are some day-old Buff Rock chicks…  ;-)

Pete up at 6:30. Nice & warm out but windy. Did the chores. Pete shaved, Sunday Paper man here and we paid him for year's subscription. Got ready to go to church. 52 were there. Record attendance. Folks here when we got home. Ate dinner, did dishes, cleaned dining room. Pete fixing garden fence. Dad & Buss started painting the chicken house. One sow had 12 pigs. Another 11 but she laid on 2 of them. Ate late supper. Did dishes. Grant came. Folks left at 9:00. Grant stayed & talked until 12:00. He took the stool I made home with him to finish.

My comments:

Here is a photo of Grant. This was probably a few years earlier, though I really don't know! ;-)

Rainy out. In to town & got Mom & Buss. Pete disced until Noon, then sowed crick bank & spaded the poultry yard & sowed it. Cleaned pantry in pm & tended chicks. Really tired at night. Dad came our for supper. Ate, did dishes. Folks left at 9:00. Took baths & went to bed.

My comments:

They certainly seem to have earned the "Really tired…" Busy day of accomplishments.

Stepping back, a bit, let's remember the ages of the people mentioned here, today.
Dad Paul was 47; Mom Dorothy was 52. Buzzy was 11, Pete 23 and Eileen 20.

Here they are, with Leo and Ida, about a year earlier.

Really windy. Bussy, Mom, Betty & I took folks car to Carroll.
Left at 10:00. Mom got shoes & suit. I got shoes. Betty got her eyes tested.
I went to the Doctor. I'm just fine. Home at 4:00. Did up work. Ate supper, Pete milked, took baths & shaved. Took Mom & Bussy into town & then went up to Arnold & Julia's.
LVene, Verle, Margaret, Orel, Edith, Howard, Helen B., Elmer, Erna, Orville, Dick, Don, Kenny, Ramona M., Edith, Ed,  [space]
Played cards & ate hot dogs.
Home at 12:30.

My comment:

Busy day at Carroll. Positive results. BIG party in the evening.

Pete disked on 80. Home to dinner. Bussy here. Max came in pm. Gary kinda scared.
She left at 4:00 and Buss & I took cream & eggs in to town. Over after Pete. He'd started walking.
Did chores, ate, went in to show "The Shining Hour." Best show I've ever seen. Home at 11:00.

My comments:

Spring farm work in the field began…

Bussy here. Pete up home in the morning. Did up usual work. Made chocolate cookies. Polly & Betty came down & I took them in to town. Betty got a permanent. Polly & I up home. They got their chicks. Did chores. Bussy slept while we ate. Took baths & went to bed early.

Pete up home. I made a batch of jell. Dad and Buss came after me at noon & I went in and ironed. Mom & Buss came home with me & we had a duck supper. Took Mom in to town. Bussy stayed all night.

My comment:

Did schools have Spring Break in 1939? Why was Buzzy not in school?

Did up chores. I made upside down cake. To church. 14 in our class. Dels & us in to folks to dinner. Pete, I, Roberta & Buss home in pm. Loaded 2 cows of Pops' for Omaha. Lil, Del, Folks here for lunch. Pete shot a duck. I went after sheep with them. Picked the duck. Ate lunch. To bed early.

My comments:

Oh my, so many activities. To church, again. Seems to be proud of their Sunday School Class. It did get them to going to church… successful, already.

Birthday noon meal in town. "Lunch" at theirs, in early evening. In between, loaded 2 cows and shot a duck!! "Picked" the duck!! Just like a chicken?? ;-)

Roberta was 5, Buzzy was 10 1/2 - very much like our Kaylee and Alex right now - interesting!! ;-)

And, the was an "upside down cake!" prepared for the birthday dinner, it appears. Just a typical Sunday in small town Iowa!! … in 1939! ;-)

Birthday note: Delbert Ford

Up late. Did usual work. Bussy walked out in morning. Boys up home after trailer. Ate dinner, boys  in to town after sheep. Did dishes, cleaned the house. Made butterscotch pie. Folks came out after Bussy. Did dishes, took baths & went to bed early.

My comment:

Sheep are tempting, but the butterscotch pie caught me eye… for an image! Yum! ;-)

Not quite perfect, needs to be eaten... right?  ;-)

Really a keen day. Cleaned the house. Pete up home.
Bussy rode his bike out after dinner. Raked awhile. Bussy took a nap.
Made peach upside down cake. LVene had her hair set. Folks came out to supper.
Pete shaved and we bathed and went to bed.

My comment: Long bike ride for Buzzy. He obviously was worn out.

Bussy got us up at 7:30. Did usual work. Made a gallon of ice cream. Cleaned up & went in home to dinner. John, Jeannette, Gertrude & Everett were there. Played piano and talked in the p.m. Home at 5:00. Chored, ate. I made an angel food. Julia & Arnold came. Frosted the cake, played pitch and ate cake. They left at 12:30.

My comment: Notice she mentioned the young children first, this time. What is on her mind, do you suppose?

Sounds like a fun evening!

Up at 6:00. Folks & Leo & Ida came out at 12:00. Bussy going back with them. They left at 4:00. Pete put up the mail-box and then did up the chores early. I fixed sandwiches for supper and popped a kettle of corn. Listened to the radio, took baths and went to bed early.

My comments: Mail box was up for Monday delivery. Suppose they got any junk mail that first day?

I like the expression: "…popped a kettle of corn." Conjures up several images...

 5 eggs

Didn't get up till 10:00. Laid in bed and read diaries. To town after Ktx. Bussy came home with me. After 11:00 when we ate breakfast. Mom & Dad came & we had dinner at 2:30. Bill & Albert here awhile and then Mrs. Lund, Edith, Erna & Howard were here awhile, too. Washed up all my shower dishes & put most of it away. Felt a bit groggy. Folks here for supper. Bussy & I went to town after butter & Pete had to put the separator together. Boys here looking for starlings. Took baths & went to bed.

My comments: 5 eggs again… go, hens! ;-)

Assume Bill was Pete's Dad and Albert must be hired man…

Here is the short entry for Monday, August 16:

Went to Old Settlers Picnic. With Helen. Saw Pete. Bussy got bicycle. Shower. Pete came. To celebration. Rode scooters. Took Bill home. To Daages dance. Home at 3:15.

Here is the long entry for Monday, August 16:

Hottest day ever. Just did necessary work. Had chicken for dinner. I went to Old Settlers Picnic with Dad & Bussy in pm. With Helen. Watched Ball Game. Just got a glimpse of Pete. Home at 6:00. Bussy got his new bicycle. Took a shower & cleaned up. Pete came at 7:30. I wasn't quite ready. To celebration. Listened to Band Concert. Rode motor scooters twice. To Leo Daages dance. Too blamed hot but had fun any way. Pete & I took Bill home. He'd been in town too long. Home about 3:15.

My comments: "Bill" of course is Pete's father. Family tradition has it that Bill 'didn't drink' during Prohibition, but 'returned to drinking' after it was over. Guess this was one of those nights. Not surprisingly, I grew up believing 'drinking' was very bad. Never tried a drop. Yet, even.

Eileen's brother, Edward, "Bussy" - "Buzzy," had a birthday, 9th, coming up on August 18. Got the new bicycle. Pretty big deal, for him, in that family!  ;-)
 
 This is an ad for a 1937 bicycle like he got - it had the tank - actually, I got it in the late 1940s for my own, as I recall - it was in great shape. I have a photo or two... just not right at hand.
