Here is the daily entry for Saturday, October 28:

Pete up home again helping pick. Did up usual work. Cleaned the house. Buzzy came out at noon and I took him in about 6:30. Home, chores, ate, cleaned up & went in town late. With Jean & Bob down on street until 10.30. Then went to Carroll in Kupka's Olds. Had candied apples. Saw a wreck. Stopped south of Glidden. Confiding. Folks kept Billy. Home at 2:00.

My comments:

Assume Grandma had Billy asleep… on bottle… much freer to go do things!!! ;-)

"Confiding" word very interesting?!?!?  ;-)

Candied apples...

Here is the daily entry for Tuesday, October 24:

Pete was going to Carroll but didn't. Mom & I went. Took Billy to Dr. Have to put him on the bottle. Mom got a lot of things. Home at 6:30. Had pancakes for supper. Dad & Bussy drove our car out here. Did dishes & folks left early.

My comments:

"Have to put him on the bottle." Interesting comment. What did baby milk bottles look like in 1939?

This one is said to be from the 1960s… What do you think? Do you have an early photo of bottle with nipple??

75 Years Ago
October 13, 1939


Under the direction of Rev. W.F. Clayburg, pastor of the Methodist church at Carroll, funeral services for William E. Smith, of the Star community were conducted at Coder’s funeral home Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Smith died Sunday at the age of 70. Pallbearers were Bernice McLaughlin, Boise McLaughlin, Leo Moylan, Conrad
Lawrence, Ed Williams and Roscoe Bowman. Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mrs. Lena Brown of Scranton, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Ballard of Waterloo,
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bartlett of Perry.
William Emmanuel Smith, son of Michael and Nellie Smith, was born at Moline, IL, May 22, 1869, and died at his country home north of Coon Rapids on October 8, 1939 at age of 70 years, 4 months, 16 days. When he was a small boy, he moved with his
parents to Grand Mound, Iowa.
At the age of 12 years he moved to Carroll county and made his home in this vicinity until the time of his death. On May 11, 1904 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Ellen Preston Ballard, and to this union were born nine children.
Mrs. Smith and two sons preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing, Willard, Irene, LeVene (Mrs. Verle Thomas), Pauline (Mrs. Merle Bower), Leverne,
Maxine (Mrs. Orrin Hilgenberg), Bethene, one step-son, Grant Ballard, two sisters, Mrs. Lenn Brown of Scranton, Mrs. Elsie Grapes of Boone, NE; two brothers, Joseph
Smith of St. Edwards, NE, and Robert Smith of Bakersfield, CA; and one half sister, Mrs. Mary Mohr of Grand Mound, besides a host of friends and acquaintances.

Cloudy & cool in morning. Pete took me in town to wash & he went up home. Mowed his beans. Got the ironing done too. Pete chored & then we ate in town. Bussy went to the show with us "Its a Wonderful World." Really was good. Home to bed at 10:30.

My comments:

I enjoy seeing the sequence of farm field work would be doing, through Mom's eyes; what he told her he was doing. Fun! ;-)

Movie starred Claudette Colbert and James Stewart - had to be good!! ;-)

I didn't get up until 9:15. Bathed & fed Billy. Mom, Dad & Bussy came out. Had beefsteak. Mom made a chocolate cake. Ate, doing dishes when Polly, Merle, Betty, Irene came down. Irene fitted my skirts again. Looked at fixture pictures. They stayed until 5:00. Ate some muskmelon. Chored. Fed Billy. Had pancakes for supper. Folks left at 9:00.

My comments:

Billy fed well, again, today. ;-)

Beefsteak for dinner.

Up early. Cleaned a chicken, made pumpkin pie. Folks here for dinner. Paul, Marion, Larry here in a new Buick. Ate, did dishes. Drove in to see Leo's. Home at 3:30 & they went to town again. Made ice cream. Folks stayed to supper. Helped Bussy with his lesson. Read awhile after folks left & went to bed.

My comments:

Labor Day, of course, though not mentioned. Looks like a Sunday, based on activities! ;-)

Pete up to Hufferd's shelling corn. Bussy fixing his airplane. I cleaned the house. LVene came & had her hair fixed just before noon & Polly came just after dinner. Waxed kitchen & dining room rugs. (sic) Pete home at 3:30 & finished plowing so. field. Chored, ate, bathed & went in town. Bussy to show. Took Billy down on street with us. Home at 12:00.

My comments:

Did the corn sheller look at all like this?

Didn't get up until 8:30. Bussy rode his bike out & woke us up. He & Pete plowing. I went in to wash and didn't get home until 4:00. Over to Hufferd's after Pete. Over to Orrin's & did their chores. Home & did ours, ate, read papers & went to bed. Bussy here all nite.

My comments:

Short night, in any case… Buzzy rode his bike out.

I think this is the same bike, in this picture, about 9-10 years later, that I'm riding.
Also in photo, Pat and Wilson Thomas, and my little brother, Jim. Note the pickup and barn in the background, among other things…

Bussy rode his bike out. He & Pete plowed awhile in am. Ate, did dishes & went in town. Pete had his hair cut & I got 2 permanent curls. Home at 3:30. Chored, cleaned up & took Billy to Polly for her to keep. Went to Des Moines with Irene, Bernice Eyestone. Danced to Paul Whiteman. He really was good. Pete drove. Home at 3:30.

My comments:

Irene had asked them to go to Des Moines this evening in her car. Sounded like they had a great time. Paul Whiteman had been known in earlier years at the King of Jazz. Here he is, as he appeared in the film, "Rhapsody in Blue," in 1945:

Up late. Rainy & cold. Did up usual work & went in town to dinner. Beefsteak.
Down town awhile. Had malted's at I.Cr. Shoppe. Put on slacks & rode Bussy's Bike awhile. Home. Scrubbed & cleaned the living room. Canned 1 qt, 1 pt of tomato preserves. Lucille & Merlin & Mrs. Barrett & Jerry were here awhile. Ate & wrote in books.

My comments:

Did she say: "Beefsteak?"

Didn't get up until 8:15. Pop here awhile. Ate, bathed Billy, did dishes, sep, ate dinner & went in home & washed. Pete threshed our rye & then threshed for Fat. Bussy lots better today.
Lil, Del, Roberta, Dennis, Jennie, Bernie, Iva stopped in home in p.m.
Folks came out after milk & cream at nite. Had french toast for supper. Took baths & went to bed.

My comments:

Nice that Buzzy was getting to feel better, for sure.

Dennis would have been about 9 months old. Roberta near 5. Here she is at 2. Just too cute to pass by...

Here is the daily entry for Thursday, August 3:

Up early. Took Pete up home. Frosted cake, bathed Billy & got rest to go to Toots' to cook for his threshers. In Polly's car. Had a keen ham dinner & ice cream. Stopped to show Billy to Aunt Lena. Stayed there nearly an hour. Went in to town. Bussy doesn't feel so well tonite. Home, did dishes, separator, ate, bathed, & went to bed.

My comments:

Aunt Lena was a sister of Michael Smith, so, my Dad's great-aunt… Always called her Aunt Lena. She married Bert Brown, they had a farm over near Scranton. No children.

Her she is, a couple of years later, holding cousin Judy Higenberg. ;-)

 

P.S. This is the day Nancy Bolger was born to friends, Glenn and Ruth Bolger, but Mom didn't know about it yet, of course. ;-)

Bussy had a blood test for his tonsils. Cleaned the house a little bit. Looked at new catalog & rested. Down & picked a few beans, tomatoes & cucumbers. Pete threshing at Bowman's. Folks came out at nite & stayed until the baby fed. Bathed & went to bed.

My comments:

Doctors seemed to like to "take out" the tonsils!

Glad she rested some…

Haven't shown cucumbers yet? Have you picked any yet this year?

Up at 6:00. Fed baby just as Pete finished chores. Hurried & ate & took Pete up to thresh. Home & did my work and went back up again. Had 12 men for dinner. Polly slept until 3:00. Grant, Rita, Betty came & ate dinner. Took Norma home. Home at 4:00. Fed baby. Priscilla had been here and she left the cutest cover. Late with the chores. Folks came & got the washing. Bussy had an airplane ride today. Fed the baby & went to bed.

My comments:

Assume Polly was involved with Toots "operation" and/or recovery. All pitching in. Threshing needed to be done while weather good. NOTE: See article in paper, below the photo.

Have an airplane photo to go with comment on Bussy… hold it off a day or two…

Here is a threshing crew at work… remember them well!

Threshing rigs in operation about the country report medium yields of fair quality grain. W.A. Kretzinger, who threshed Monday, reports his oats went about 35 bushels to the acre.
