This entry is a post from the diary of my mother, twenty year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date. She kept a diary from 1932 as a freshman in high school until she left us, too early, in 1999.


Here is the daily entry for Saturday, July 1:

 Birthday note: Billy Smith    [BIRTH day!]

They came at 5:00 & gave me caster oil and a little later an enaea [sic]. Started pains at 7:00 and the baby was born at 8:30.
Got along just fine. Pete stayed with me until I came out from under the ether and then he went home. Rested pretty good. Baby sure is nice. [That is gratifying!]
Weighed 8# 14 3/4 oz. Billy Leverne. Doesn't seem possible it's over.
Ate a good dinner. Feel keen.
Berthal Jones, Paul, Katherine Kimball, Barbara & Johnnie here in pm.
Nursed baby at 3:00. He sure took right a hold. Rested good.
Ate supper. Clayburgs & Pete here. Clayburgs bro't a little white dress. Pete left about 9:30.

My comments:

Successful day… not that there was really any doubt!  ;-)

No early baby photos that I am aware of… sorry! Or, maybe not! ;-)

Suppose the "little white dress" looked something like this?

Here is the daily entry for Tuesday, June 6:

Rainy when we got up. Went after cows with Pete. He milked. Did usual work. Pete up home till 10:00. In home. Picked berries and ate there. Home, cleaned up and went to Carroll. Pete went to Dr. with me. Everything OK. Thinks it's a boy. Only 2 wks. maybe. Head is down already. Shopped awhile. Got pt. ice cream. Down by hospital. Home. Pete went to Dr. He's OK too. Home & did usual work. Tired. Ate & went to bed.

My comments:

"Everything OK. Thinks it's a boy. Only 2 wks. maybe. Head is down already." Always watching for reports on THE BABY! Ok, that is me… amazing!

Good to hear Dr. say Dad is ok, as well. He still hurts, though, I'm sure.

Grandma Kinnick always had Raspberries, so assuming that is what they picked! Look good! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Thursday, May 18:

Cloudy all morning. Sprinkled a little. In town at 7:00. Got folk's car. Out home getting ready to go to Carroll. Pete fixed the gate by road. In after Mom at 10:00. Shopped awhile before dinner. Ate at Carroll Cafe. To Dr. only a few minutes. He was in a hurry to get to hospital. Only gained one pound. Left Carroll at 2:30. Home in good time. Took folk's car in. Chored, ate, bathed, shaved, to Jack Bowman's to SS part. A lot there. Had wiener roast. Home at 12:00.

Nice report from Dr. visit, again!

From March 1 thru April 29, I posted every day, to cover the marriage and the early married life of Pete and Eileen (Kinnick) Smith, but decided to 'take a breather.'  Resuming with Dec 1, 1938...


Here is the daily entry for Saturday, Dec 10:

Up late. Did the chores, ate dinner early & went to Carroll. Pete got license & corn application. I went to the Doctor for first  examination. He said I was just coming fine. Home at 6:30. Ate supper. Ed Kult came talked 'till 8:30 & then we went to bed.

My comments: Did they need approval from government to plant corn?? Or how much?

It's official: "I went to the Doctor for first  examination. He said I was just coming fine." I am on the way…  what fun! ;-)

Can you believe, I have a photo of Ed Kult, with his family (wife, Rowena), about 15 years later - early 1950s, in basement of the Star Church. Small world!! ;-)

Up late. Did the chores and then Pete took me in to town. He went up home. Ate dinner. Told Mom. Got a permanent from Ted in p.m. Did my ironing. Pete came at 5:00. Had chicken & noodles for supper. Were going to games & dance but Pete was tired so we stayed home.

My comments: The comment that caught my attention here was "Told Mom." Do you suppose that was the announcement to her Mom that I was going to arrive on July 1, 1939?? Perhaps just my ego, but I think this was it! ;-)

Did usual work in morning. Pete here for dinner. Vegetable soup. Made fresh rolls in pm. and got ready for club tonite. In town at 7:00. To Caswell's to Jr. Fed. Didn't have too much of a good time. Rice, whip. cream, crushed pineapple & coffee. Home at 12:00.
"Poochies' mamma."

My comments: Our "not quite 20" new farm housewife doesn't seem quite ready for the matronly role of small town club membership, yet… She did list the food… that never changes… ;-)

"Poochie" was the dog - not sure the reference to "mamma" in that context.

Pretty sure this photo, from nearly a year later, is actually "Poochie!"

Here is the short entry for Monday, August 16:

Went to Old Settlers Picnic. With Helen. Saw Pete. Bussy got bicycle. Shower. Pete came. To celebration. Rode scooters. Took Bill home. To Daages dance. Home at 3:15.

Here is the long entry for Monday, August 16:

Hottest day ever. Just did necessary work. Had chicken for dinner. I went to Old Settlers Picnic with Dad & Bussy in pm. With Helen. Watched Ball Game. Just got a glimpse of Pete. Home at 6:00. Bussy got his new bicycle. Took a shower & cleaned up. Pete came at 7:30. I wasn't quite ready. To celebration. Listened to Band Concert. Rode motor scooters twice. To Leo Daages dance. Too blamed hot but had fun any way. Pete & I took Bill home. He'd been in town too long. Home about 3:15.

My comments: "Bill" of course is Pete's father. Family tradition has it that Bill 'didn't drink' during Prohibition, but 'returned to drinking' after it was over. Guess this was one of those nights. Not surprisingly, I grew up believing 'drinking' was very bad. Never tried a drop. Yet, even.

Eileen's brother, Edward, "Bussy" - "Buzzy," had a birthday, 9th, coming up on August 18. Got the new bicycle. Pretty big deal, for him, in that family!  ;-)
 
 This is an ad for a 1937 bicycle like he got - it had the tank - actually, I got it in the late 1940s for my own, as I recall - it was in great shape. I have a photo or two... just not right at hand.

Folks planted spuds, Leo plowed, folks to Lils. I still in o'alls when Pete came. Went to "One in a Million." Elmer & Helen & we over to Cafe. Home early.

Here is the long entry for Sunday, May 9:

Up at 7:00, got breakfast, cleaned, upstairs, down, did some washing. Folks planted potatoes, Leo plowed, folks to Lil's for dinner. Ironed, did separator, listened to radio, fixed nails. Folks just got home & Pete came. I still in my overalls. Got dressed up. Waited till nearly 8:00 & then went to the show. "One In a Million." Best ever. Elmer, Helen Pete & I over to the Cafe. Home real early."Best e

I wanted to share this coverall photo of Eileen anyway!  With Buzzy and me, maybe 7-8 years later. She still looked good in the coveralls!  ;-)
