Here is the daily entry for Thursday, October 19:

Really busy. Set up front room stove. Cleaned whole house. Make 2 cakes. Had ice cream with b.r. sauce. Don, Norma, Ruth, Glenn, Vic, Ger., Max, Betty, Gary, Verle, LVene, Arnold, Julia,  Merle, Polly, Margaret, Orel here. Sang. Stayed till 11:00.

My comments:

Quite a party. All very familiar persons. Could have just as well been ten or twenty years later!! ;-)

Cake and ice cream sounds pretty good, to me!!

Here is the daily entry for Wednesday, September 20:

Pete up home all day making hay. Max, LVene, Julia here in morning to get their hair fixed. Lillian & Dennis came after dinner & went to club with me a Pruiett's. Billy good. Home, chores. In town. Pete got a hair cut. Up to folks' awhile. Home late.

My comments:

"Billy good." Still makes me feel good to have my mother's approval!! ;-)

Dennis was about 21 months old, at this time. Here is a photo of him, just a little later, perhaps.

Here is the daily entry for Monday, July 24:

Took Pete up home. Bathed baby & then Julia & Edith came & got cream to help serve Berthal's threshers. Left for Carroll at 10:30. Mom, Buss, Billy & I. Real hot. Ate at Carroll. Saw Dr. Baby weighs 10 1/2 #. Home at 3:30. Quite tired. Mom & Dad & Buss left here at 6:00. Rainy. Chored, bathed & went to bed.

My comments:

She was tired… her writing style showed it! Billy gaining weight 'nicely.'

Notice that threshers moved around the community… different groups of men, worked at different sites… big noon meal at different  place each day. Quite a well orchestrated tradition!! ;-)

Cream came from the separator… milk separated into milk pail and cream can. Cream sold, milk consumed… by family or hogs.

Here is a 1939 new International Harvester separator - with model! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Thursday, June 8:

Pop & Junior came down in morning. Jr. finished planting the beans and Pete harrowed them in. In town & picked strawberries & peas. Pop, Jr, & Pete her for dinner. Had creamed new potatoes & peas. LVene & Verle came & stayed till 2:00. Did dishes. Pete finished harrowing at 4:00 & we went out in garden & planted cucumbers & a few more spuds. Chored. Eating when LVene, Verle, Arnold, Julia came. Sat on floor in dark and talked. Elmer & Don came. All left at 11:00. Right to bed.

My comments:

Nice that Dad got help finishing planting. Don't imagine he was real anxious to be around that horse again, soon. Why did EVERYONE stop by? Had they heard he was hurt??

"…creamed new potatoes & peas" sure sounded good!!

Really hot in the morning. Did usual work. LVene came down to have her hair set. She stayed till 10:30. Ate, took Pete over on 80. Came home, cleaned up, drove my car up to LVene's, went with her & Julia to Club at Doris Johnston's. Rained while we were there. Over home a minute then up to LVene's after our car, over after Pete. Hone, chores, ate, bathed, shaved, went to bed.

My comments:

Nice to have rain when it is needed, on the farm...

Birthday note: Julia Hicks

Nice day. A little cool. Did separator and went in to wash. Through at 11:00. Down town & did the shopping. Did my ironing. Bussy sprained his ankle yesterday & was home from school. Got 50 day-old Buff Rocks. Home & fixed them up, fixed picnic lunch. Burned brush down by gate. Had wieners, buns, potato salad, beet pickles, marshmallows, cup cakes & coffee. In house again at 10:00. Pete read paper & I wrote in books & then to bed.

My comments:

Picnic two days in a row… spring must have arrived… ;-)

50 more baby chicks… Dad apparently liked his chicken and noodles… see entry in a couple of day… here are some day-old Buff Rock chicks…  ;-)

Nice day only windy. Did up work.  In to town until 11:00. Got some rhubarb from Rena George. Had wieners for dinner. Up to LVene's & went to club with her, Julia, Betty, Carrie at Selma Hagan's. Our Farm Bureau Group sang. Home and in to town at 5:30. Got 25 more white Rocks from Alex. Came home & fixed them. Did chores & went to bed.

My comments:

More chickens… Do you have rhubarb yet??
