Here is the daily entry for Tuesday, September 26:

Birthday note: Karen Kay Kinnick [1st birthday]

Up at 6:00. Really cold. Did dishes, separator. Pete over at Buds' shelling. Home to dinner. Cleaned up & went in to town to Fair. Mom kept Billy. Home at 5:30.
Chored, ate, & went to bed.

My comments:

They would have gotten this certificate last Sunday, most likely! ;-)

"Even as abroad, gas masks were in use in Coon Rapids early Wednesday morning. The firemen found it necessary to use them in fighting the $2,000 blaze which smoldered in the basement of the Graves Bakery, sending out clouds of dense black smoke. Ed Zavitz, nightwatch, discovered smoke coming through the sidewalk ventilators in front of the bakery about 2 a.m. and turned in the alarm. Firemen and a large crowd of spectators promptly appeared on the scene. Since the fire was in the basement directly under the huge three ton oven, firemen were handicapped in getting at it, fearing the thing might cave in on them at any time. The building, owned by Lela Mountain, and the bakery equipment, owned by Paul Graves, were both covered by insurance and will be put in condition immediately. The floor
will have to be replaced in the back half of the building, glass replaced and the entire building repainted according to Wm. Mountain, who estimates damage at about $325.
Bakery equipment, damaged by smoke, water and chemical will have to be completely reconditioned before business can be resumed, which will be at least 30 days, according to Mr. Graves.
Smoke also seeped through the basement walls filling the Bowman grocery and Textors cafe on either side of the Bakery, but very little damage was done at either place. The fire was supposedly started by defective wiring igniting waste in the basement."

Here is the daily entry for Monday, September 25:

Real cold. Went in to wash. Stayed for dinner. Ironed in pm. Karen there. Down town awhile. Pete, Bud, Don & Fat putting up hay in pm. Home at 6:00. Fed Billy, chores, ate & went to bed early.

My comments:

Putting up hay in September 25th still has me shaking my head… ????

Washing and ironing a pretty big part of their week. ;-)

I could not pass this one up...

75 Years Ago
September 15, 1939

"By this afternoon 1,000 men from Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma will have moved into Coon Rapids to make their home for the next five or six weeks. Garst and Thomas Hybrid Corn Company began this week picking their enormous 1939 corn crop over some 44,000 acres around the country and trucking it to their sorting and drying plants here. They started with about 300 sorters the first week and gradually increased the number until today when they expect to have the full 1,000 men going at full speed on shifts to keep the corn going continuously. Sacking crews will start work the middle of next week increasing the payroll to about $20,000 weekly. It is the intention of the company to pick all of their corn by hand this year and sort it green before it is dried, thus avoiding much shattered corn. The sorters capacity is estimated at about 6,000 bushels daily."

Pete up to Toot's & XXX? home all day. I ironed all pm. Scribbed separator room floor.
Pete just finished the chores when LVene & Verle came
Brought 2 bu. walnuts.
Played cards 'till 12:00.

Lillian's boy Dennis Kinnick [Ford] born at St. Anthony's at 7:15.

My comments: Welcome to the world, Dennis!
Got 2 bu. walnuts - played cards until midnight… what more could one ask?

 Real nice out. Pete plowed down here. Did up the usual work. In the pm. planted radishes and lettuce. Poochie ran off with the peas. Norma & her mother here awhile in p.m. At nite just did up the usual work & went to bed. In to town in the morning awhile.

My comments: Couple things here worthy of comment it seems. Confirms he was farming their new 'homeplace' along with 'the 80.' Continued to work in garden. "Poochie" the dog identified for first time. Is this same dog they had a couple of years later?

Up at 6:30. Read cold out. Did separator & got breakfast. Up to Smith's. Polly & Merle there. They were going back after their things. Back at 10:00. Did dishes, got dinner. Drove tractor out of the yard. Did dishes & separator.Cleaned the house a little, washed my hair. At nite did the dishes and separator and went to bed early.

My comments: "Sept in!" Ha! Too cold to be in the field, it appears. Very busy before 10 am, anyway, it seems. Washed dishes three times and recorded it, along with separator both times…

Up at 6:30. Folks here at 8:30 for breakfast. They helped with the work & then left. I stayed in the house & worked & Pete worked on the lawn. He went over to the other place awhile in p.m. I painted 2 of the separator house windows & scrubbed those floors. To bed as soon as Pete got thru 'separating.'

My comments: Can you imagine what the 'separator house' looked like? I can…  ;-)

Took Pete up to Smith's. Read the Enterprise up there. Got our Register up there for the first time. Home & mixed out my bread. Made plain rolls because I was out of butter. Went in to town a minute. Home at nite.

My comments: Must read the Register and the Enterprise. Main source of news, as well as the radio. Life was good.

Down to the plant in the morning. Out to the farm in the p.m. Still trying to get off some paper. Pete plastering. Home at 5:00. Cleaned up. Pete came in. Listened to Centerville beat Coon Rapids. Foggy, slick nite out. Home early.

My comments: Lots of work to do on the farm house before the move in in a couple of weeks. Have you tried pulling off old wall paper? No fun. Pete plastering… must be some wall unfinished, or being moved.

Girls basketball team lost this game at State Championship - Did you see the hometown paper?

 Really had a busy day at the office. Had my hair set at Noon at Louetta's but I didn't like it. Ferguson brought by Fuller hair brush & comb cleaner. Home & washed my hair. Pete came. Picked up Edith and Howard & went to Carroll to hear little Joe. Really had a keen time. To Carroll Cafe at Intermission. Danced on 2nd floor before we came home. Home real late.

My comments: She still worked at the Municipal Utilities Plant handling the monthly billings.

[Emmert's wife, Margaret, was the daughter of Wilson and Lucile (KINNICK) Herron]

Services for Emmert Nelsen

Funeral services for Emmert M. Nelsen were conducted by Pastors Harris Hostager and Joan Mau on September 24, 1987 at Out Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon.

Interment was in Orange Center Cemetery south of Coon Rapids. Casketbeareres were grandsons: Randy Nelsen, Todd Nelsen, Michael Nelsen, Carrell Nelsen II, Don Nelsen, Joel Rattenborg, Jay Myers, Nick Nelsen, Chad Nelsen, Joshua Nelsen, Scott Dermody, David Dermody and James Nelsen.

Emmert M. Nelsen

Emmert Martinus Nelsen, the son of Nels George and Vitta Pedersen Nelsen, was born July 25, 1914 in Audubon County near Ross, Iowa and died of respiratory failure on September 22, 1987 at Jenny Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 73 years.

He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids, and educated in the Guthrie County schools.

On October 2, 1933 he married Margaret Herron of Coon Rapids and to this union eight children were born.

They farmed until 1960 when they moved into Audubon where he worked for Langs Home Furnishings. In March of 1963 they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado to work for the S & M Egg Ranch.They returned to Audubon in 1965 and he worked for the City of Audubon until he retired in 1980.

He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon.

Preceding him in death were three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his parents; his stepmother, Elna; two brothers, Arnold and Hardvig Nelsen; and one sister, Norma Slater.

Survivors include his wife Margaret of Audubon; the following children: Arnold and wife Karen Nelsen of Jefferson, S.D., Darrell and wife Sue Nelsen of Audubon, Thomas and wife Betsy Nelsen of Hamlin, Marie and husband Bennie Myers of Treynor, Vitta and husband Bob Rattenborg of Audubon, Donald and wife Dorothy Nelsen of Avoca, Phyllis Dermondy of Johnston, and Frank and wife Ann Nelsen of Walnut; 24 grand-children; 18 great-grand-children; three sisters, Ramona and husband Wyman Jensen of Altoona, Gretchen and husband Mike De Carlo of Des Moines, and Joan and husband Roy Mortensen of Audubon; and two brothers, Elmer and wife Sharon Nelsen of Des Moines and Dale Nelsen of California; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

For 1937, for most days, there is both a short entry in a multi-year diary and a longer entry in a an appointment book like her diaries of past years. There is some indication the short entries were made later based on the longer entries. We still do not really know for sure.

WELL, now we know. March 8 was the last entry in the 'longer' appointment book, like in prior years. March 9 begins only entries in the shorter, 5 year diary format. How long will this last???

Here is the entry for Tuesday, March 9: 

Ate at Prestos. Got sheet music, kite, oil, called Dad & told them to come after me. Played Old Sol. Leo came about 12:00.Stopped at Sac City. Stopped at Carroll awhile. Called Pete. He came at 8:30. To "Ladies in Love." Not very good. Home about 1:00.

Here is the long entry for Monday, March 9:

Up about 8:30. Ate at Presto. Got sheet music, kite, cod liver oil, and called Dad & told them to come after me. Went to my room & played Sol. Leo came about 12:00. Started home right away. I drove. Stopped & saw Ila Jean at Sac City. Stopped at Carroll & got candy & a present for Ida Marie - dresser scarf. Home about 3:30. Got Bussy. Glad to be home. Called LVene & Charley C. B. Got supper & folks to show. Pete came at about 8:30. To "Ladies in Love." Not very good. Home about 1:00.

My comments: I imagine she had a lot to talk about with Pete.


Sheet music, she bought with her money, and a kite!

I found the notes about the stops in both Sac City and Carroll very interesting. No comment on what her Dad or her Mom might have said about her coming back. Or, about her going, for that matter. Her Dad took her to Storm Lake, so presumably he supported the move. Will we hear any more about it??

Up at 8:00. Ate at Martins. To work at 9:00. Got out Used Car Sheets. Don't like it any too well. To lunch at Sugar Bol with Lou & Charlotte. Lou getting shoes. Awful draggy pm. Nothing to do. Wrote and mailed letter to Pete & the folks. 6:00 finally came. Ate at Martins. Took a bath. Decided to go home. Peck gave me 2.50. I told him CCB called & wanted me back. He swallowed it. Don't like it a bit. Can hardly wait to get home. [Added later, arrow to CCB: C.C.B. is the lawyer, Charles C. Browning.]

Here is the long entry for a Monday, March 8:

Up about 8:00. Fixed my hair, ate breakfast at Martins' & went to work. Busy typing Used Car Sheets all morning & then ate at Sugar Bowl. Loafed all pm. Really got on my nerves. Mailed letters.  Real cold & windy. Went home at six, ate creamed chicken at Martins. Decided not to stay. About 9:00 went over & told him I was wanted here in Coon. He gave me $2.50. Kinda mad about it. Went to my room & took bath, played Sol. & went to bed. Really felt good about quitting.

My comments: Very interesting day. Homesick, mostly, in alien territory. "Coon Rapids" girl, through and through, over and over…  ;-)

Cloudy & a little colder.  Not thawing so much. Up to Jean's a while. Dad ordered taxes at Carroll so Bussy & I ate alone. After dinner I took a few typing tests & then studied short hand. Got another lesson to send in. Knole & Honald's here during the day. Got quite nice out late in the afternoon. Got the paper and walked home. Rode as far a Mts. with them. Leo & Buss & I down to river in the buggy. Did up work & then Storm Lake Long Distance call. Listened to radio programs. To bed early

My comments: More mysteries than answers, today. "Storm Lake Long Distance" call - what was that?

It was Thursday, so The Coon Rapids Enterprise came out, but, where and how did she get it?

Knoll's and Honald's were farmers out east of town several miles. Almost surprised she knew them, then.

The Mountain family were neighbors, and most interesting folks. Even in my days, they were thought of, dare I say it, "old maid school teachers." VERY GOOD teachers, let me be sure to say. Teachers for many, many years in the community.

Finally, I'm fascinated by the "down to river in the buggy." We get so few insights into real, everyday life of the time. Was the river up, from the thaw? The river ran through the back of their property, so they would have gone back across the fields to get there.

Would they have looked something like this??  ;-)

Donna Kinnick recognized for Volunteerism

It is always a pleasure to share information about Volunteers - and this time it is a KINNICK:

KINNICK RECOGNIZED FOR VOLUNTEERISM

Donna Kinnick, a Bayard native who lives in Glidden and works at Community Insurance in Glidden, was named an Everyday Hero by Carroll County State Bank for her many hours of service to her community and school. Kinnick was nominated for the award by Angela Lensch, an instructor in the Glidden-Ralston school district.

“I have known Mrs. Kinnick for almost my whole life and have found her to be a huge part
of planning, organizing, and working at every event that involves our community for as long
as I can remember,” wrote Lensch in her nomination letter. “There are endless amounts of
people who have definitely benefited from her presence. She always shows great leadership
qualities and always makes sure to get any job done even though it’s a fully volunteer activity.
She has also made a concerted effort to synthesize planned activities to benefit the town of Glidden.”

Lensch noted that Kinnick has organized the Glidden Fun Days events, helps out weekly at the GR After School Program, organized the Box Tops program for the school, and volunteered time to help with concessions for the Glidden swim team. The latter, Lensch said, was a job no one else cared to do and Kinnick stepped forward, “... even though her own kids have grown and graduated. It was clearly done out of the kindness of her heart.”

“It is clearly evident that Mrs. Kinnink is well deserving of this outstanding person of our community distinction. Finally though, the best thing about Donna is that she is always a smile, kind- word, and one of the most warm-hearted person that you will find anywhere. Glidden is lucky to have a person such as this to support the people in this town!”

Donna is married to high school sweetheart, Lon Kinnick, and they live north of Glidden. They have two grown daughters, Keely and Kami.
