This entry is a post from the diary of my mother, twenty year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date. She kept a diary from 1932 as a freshman in high school until she left us, too early, in 1999.


Here is the daily entry for Wednesday, May 31:

Did up morning work. LVene & Polly came & we gave pantry a first coat, kitchen 1st coat, painted white bed & box, living room floor. Washed living room & bedroom woodwork. Girls left at 5:00. Pretty tired. Fed my chicks. Pete came at 6:00. Chored. Didn't have much supper. Took baths & went in town. Drank Pepsi-Colas at the folks. Sat on porch awhile. Down town shopping. To bed at 11:30.

My comments:

Does this sound like a Norman Rockwell painting, or what? "…drank Pepsi-Colas… sat on porch awhile…" Pepsi was pretty proud of 39 years. Not sure how Grandpa Kinnick would have had Pepsi-Colas - pretty extravagant for him. Something special must have been going on!! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Tuesday, May 30:

 Really hot. Ate breakfast, picked flowers & went in & decorated Pete's mother's graves. Home at 10:00. Pete went over to finish plowing. Folks came out. Ate did dishes, made angel food, read awhile. In town after ice. Lil & Del here for supper. Moved the piano, etc. Did dishes late. Took baths. To bed at 11:30.

My comments:

Memorial Day. Interesting how she said "decorated Pete's mother's graves." In the photo, Ella's stone is in the center and Theodore is to the right. In 1939, Irene's would not have been there, of course, nor would the big stone for W.E. Smith, that I am standing beside in the upper photo.
[Theodore was their first son, together, born in 1904, Toots in 1906, Irene in 1909… Theodore died in 1921.]

Here is the daily entry for Monday, May 29:

Mom did the washing. I made a batch of jell & a gold cake in the morning. Ate dinner. Took Pete over on 80 & went in and ironed. Louise and 4 kids were there.
Over after Pete at 5:00. Home, chores early. Little lamb died. Ate & went out & weeded the potatoes. Folks came & we sat on the porch & talked until 10:00. To bed.

My comments:

Good opportunity to share this photo of Rasmus and Louise and their family, from a few years later. Judy wasn't yet born, but the others around Louise would be the four: Annie, Winona, Marie and Darrell.

Rasmus and older sons, Howard and Karl are in the back. I assume Paul was in the service when this was taken. Howard was, as well, but home on leave, as I recall other photos from this day.
[Louise was a sister of Dorothy, Eileen's mother, of course. Rasmus and Louise lived along the Raccoon River, south of Bayard, in Guthrie County]

Here is the daily entry for Sunday, May 28:

 Cloudy in morning. Fixed ice cream & salad. Did chores, went to S.S. & church. Home & were going to freeze ice cr. but Leo & Dad were here & had it all fixed. Was I mad. in town. Got ready to go to Springbrook.
52 Williams were there - Ate, boys went swimming. Leo W. had Pete's coat. Home, chored, cleaned up. Went in to "Ice Follies '39" Really was good. Talked to Arnold, Julia & Edith & came home.

My comments:

Williams was Mom's paternal grandmother. This group had gotten together for years, and it continued as Kinnick-Williams picnic into the 1950s. Mom grandma, Nettie Williams had only died three years earlier. These were her children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren. Her married name was Kinnick, of course. [Leo W. was Leo Williams, a nephew of Nettie]

Movie featured Joan Crawford and Jimmy Stewart - couldn't help but be good!!  ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Saturday, May 27:

Rained real nice several times during day. Did up usual work. Made an angel food. Ate dinner. Pete went in town in pm & got his haircut. Home and he helped me clean the house. Washed my hair. Pete chored early. Leo & Ida came & we all were in at folks' for supper. Did dishes & went down town. Sat on Main St. for long time. Home at 11:00.

My comments:

A rainy Saturday changed the routine on this Saturday. Great day to get a haircut, Pete! ;-)

When I read she "Made an angel food" the following image came to my mind. I was so happy to be able to retrieve it!!  ;-) [It is a few years later, but less than ten...]

Here is the daily entry for Friday, May 26:

Late doing morning chores. Did usual work. Made noodles. Pete fixing fence so cows can't get in the oats. Ate chicken noodle dinner. Took Pete over on 80 to plow. Finished my dishes. Went in town to iron. Rained a little in pm. Over after Pete. Did the chores up early. Rained real hard about 7:30. Just what we needed. Really a blessing. Ate, Pete went out and cut off the burdocks in the yard. To bed early.

My comments:

How many burdocks have you cut? I did many, many in those early days... on the farm.

Here is the daily entry for Thursday, May 25:

Really hot in the morning. Did usual work. LVene came down to have her hair set. She stayed till 10:30. Ate, took Pete over on 80. Came home, cleaned up, drove my car up to LVene's, went with her & Julia to Club at Doris Johnston's. Rained while we were there. Over home a minute then up to LVene's after our car, over after Pete. Hone, chores, ate, bathed, shaved, went to bed.

My comments:

Nice to have rain when it is needed, on the farm...
