75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - August 4, 1937

This entry is the daily post on this blog from the diary of eighteen year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date.

Since midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.

[August 1, 1937, at Ledges]

Here is the short entry for Wednesday, August 4:

Ironed at nite. Pete came & we went in to town. Saw Clarabelle. She didn't know we went together. Did shopping, got pt.of i. cream & went riding.

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, August 4:

Usual work. Ironed from 6 to 8:00. Took shower, got cleaned up. Pete came & we went in to town. Saw Clarabelle. She didn't even know we went together. Did a little shopping, got pint of ice cream & went riding before coming home.

My comments: I assume this is the Clarabelle that married Frank Clayburg, but I cannot remember her maiden name. Will John or Ruth tell me first?

Here is a pint of Ice Cream, today…  What did one look like in 1937?

[August 1, 1937, at Ledges]

Here is the short entry for Tuesday, August 3:

Real warm. I feel rested but Verna's still tired. Went to Bk Nite with the folks. "Love is News." Good. Smoozies. Home early.

Here is the long entry for Tuesday, August 3:

Real warm again. Feeling rested again. Poor Verna still tired. Went to Bk Nite with the Folks. "Love is News." Really good. Smoozies. Home early.

My comments: "Love is News" was a 1937 romantic film starring Tyrone Power, Loretta Young, and Don Ameche. This movie was the first film for which Tyrone Power had top billing. [The picture was remade in 1947 as "That Wonderful Urge", with Power again and Gene Tierney.]

Here is the short entry for Monday, August 2:
Really sleepy. Poor Pete threshing. Collecting bills. Home early, Took shower. To bed early.

Here is the long entry for Monday, August 2:

Really sleepy all day. Poor Pete threshing! Collecting bills most of day. Home early at nite. I took a shower. Mom getting ready to wash. To bed early.

My comments: Being in the office collecting bills did beat being in the field threshing oats and straw!

It looked like this. Water, anyone?  ;-)

Here is the short entry for Sunday, August 1:

Hot. Picnic dinner. Helen & Elmer came & we went to Pete's. He didn't get up till 10:00. To Ledges. Pete & manager fight. "Captain's Courageous." Too hot to enjoy it. Elmer drove  home.

Here is the long entry for Sunday, August 1:

Up early. Really hot. Getting picnic dinner ready. Elmer & Helen came for me & we went to Pete's. He just shaving. Up at 10:15. To the Ledges. Real nice but hot billy hell. Kupkas there. Read Sunday paper, drove around. Pete & the officer going around. Was I ever scared. He drove to Jefferson. "Captain's Courageous." Too hot to enjoy the show. Elmer drove home. Here in good time.

My comments: Oh, my… quite a day, filled with activities worthy of comments! My Dad, almost 22, arguing with the park ranger… interesting image!! At least he shouldn't have been tired?!?!?

The new photo, above, for August, was likely taken at this visit to the park. I suspect Jean Kupka, Mom's friend, took the photo and gave it to her. Notice the back of the car in the photo, behind them… Would be Elmer's car, I assume, not Pete's.

'Captains Courageous' was a 1937 MGM family adventure film, based on the novel by Rudyard Kipling. It starred, Freddie Bartholonew, Spencer Tracy, Lionel Barrymore, Melvyn Douglas, Mickey Rooney and John Carradine, among others. Spencer Tracy won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in the film. The film won the Best Picture Oscar, as well, along with two other Oscars.

Warm. Rained. Had V-8. To town with Leo. With Pete. Went home & changed clothes & went to Spring Lake dance. Keen dance. Verna there & Danced with Pete & Lew.

Here is the long entry for Saturday, July 31:

[Note along top: Almost ran off the rich once.]
In to work at 8:00. Real warm. Rained in p.m. Quit work about 5:00. Had V-8. Home early. Ate, cleaned up & went in to town with Leo & Bussy. With Pete. Out home & changed clothes for dance. Dad says he wishes I had corns; wouldn't be so crazy about dancing. Over to Pete's. The changed clothes. Left for Sp. Lake at 9:00. Keen dance. Verna there. Lew Clausen.

My comments: He Dad was very clever! Not!  ;-)

Interesting how different clothes were required for dance at Spring Lake than for being in town! Any comments on that???  ;-)

Corns, anyone? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callus#Corns

Here is the short entry for Friday, July 30:

Warm. Made out meter books & log sheets. Waited for Dad at the Bk. Ate, took shower, [bottom line not readable… see below]

Here is the long entry for Friday, July 30:

Terribly warm & sticky. Made out meter record book & copied log sheets. Off work at 5:00. Waited for Dad at the Bk. Laurence Morman asked how it felt to be smart. I think he should ask somebody else! Ate, exercised, took shower, wrote letters, & went to bed early.

My comments: New work words: "meter record books & log sheets" - always new things to learn.

Dance is on Saturday night, this week… ;-)
