Here is the short entry for Friday, May 7:

Typed in A.M. With Beth awhile. [added later: Beth Thomas] With Helen J. & Edith. Dad brought ice cream & we went down & ate it. Was asleep.

Here is the long entry for Friday, May 7:

Keen morning. Up at 6:30. Got breakfast. To town early. Took dictation most of the morning.  Bussy & I home to dinner. Typed most all afternoon. With Beth awhile. Rained in evening. With Helen Jensen & Edith. Home alone. Back in after Dad. Heifer had a calf. Dad in to town after supper. We got tired waiting for him so we went to bed. he bro't ice cream, we went down and ate it. Brought home a chest of drawers for me.

My comments: Ice Cream. Chest of Drawers. Heifer had a calf. Big day!  ;-)

Ok, I can smell the calf… know what I mean?  Live on a farm?

Here is the short entry for Thursday, May 6:

Nice day. Over to Rex's quite awhile in AM. Wrote to Bud on Main Street. Everyone bothering. Took V-8 home. Have a side ache. To bed early.

Here is the long entry for Thursday, May 6:

All of these nice days are beginning to seem too good to be true. Over to Rex's talking to him about Canada. There nearly all morning. Typed all afternoon. Wrote to Bud in the middle of Main Street. Everyone came to bother me. Took V-8 home. Had side ache. Got supper, cleaned up  & went to bed real early. Rained at nite.

My comments: She must have been sitting in the car, parked in the middle of the street, writing her letter. Why she was there rather than in the nice office where she worked, I do not know.

I have provided a photo, below, of the very wide Main Street just south of her office where Eileen would have been sitting in the parked car writing her letter. You can see the diagonal parking in front of these stores. It was the same on other side of the street, behind the photographer who took this photo. The center of the street, then, was still wide enough for cars to also park down the middle of the street. When I was growing up, the center parking was also diagonal. I think in later years, it was switched to parallel. In any event. She was likely sitting in the car, along here, and anyone walking by would she her sitting in the car, wondering: "Why is she sitting in the car?"

Keen day. Pattern man wanted me to work for them. Letter from Bud. Went in to skate. Got there early. So we went riding& then skating. Not a very good time. Too far.

Keen day. Vogue pattern man in to see me in the morning. Not very busy all day. Looking for Mr. Runnels in pm. - - -
Letter from Bud on 2nd mail - - - [couple of lines of shorthand]
- - - Took the car home at nite; back in after Dad. Ironed my dress, washed & get ready to skate. Got there early so I went riding. [Seven lines of shorthand: see image below!]

My comments: We know so little, really…

Keen Day. Really typed. Helen J. here after school. Drove Lund's car home & walked the rest of the way. Had supper, played catch, & then to Bank Nite. "Don't Tell The Wife."

A keen day. All 3 of us home to dinner. Really worked all day long. Typing estates. Helen J. here after school. Drove Lund's car home & then walked the rest of the way. Had supper early. Played catch with Bussy & then we came in to Bank Nite. Una Merkel in "Don'e Tell The Wife" - … Not any too good.

My comments: Don't hear a poor review from her very often!

The movie was so obscure, it didn't have a regular listing; just mentioned in Una Merkel writeup.

Rainy. Leo to Tilton & Guthrie. Went to sleep on Studio Couch. After my hair dried I went  upstairs to bed.

Another rainy day but not so cold. I drove car home. Washed my hair & then back after Dad. Ate early. Leo to Tilton Guthrie. Went to sleep on studio couch about 7:30. After my hair dried I went upstairs to bed.

My comments: I did find a "Tilton & Guthrie" reference for the period:

Slept 13 hours. Cleaned house, ironed & went to church. Rained all day. Ironed all pm. Cleaned up, & got ready for nite. Pete came at 8:00. Went to "Stowaway." In pickup with Elmer & Helen to Bayard.

Slept my customary 13 hrs. again. Cleaned upstairs, ironed, & got ready for church. Sat with Helen & Mildred. Rained all day. Ironed curtains in pm. Listened to all the good programs, took a bath & got ready for nite. Pete came at 8:00. Went to "Stowaway." In Pick Up with Elmer & Helen to Bayard. [Three lines of shorthand].

My comments: Buzz told me on the phone last week that he thought Eileen started writing her "secret" notes in shorthand so that her brothers, Buzz and Leo, could not get in and read them.

May 1936 High School Graduation Photo

Here is the short entry for Saturday, May 1:

Keen May Day. Everyone tired after the dance. Up to Jeans and down to the library. Raked part of the yard. Ate, cleaned up & went to sleep about 7:00.

Here is the long entry for Saturday, May 1:

Keen May Day. Can't understand why Bud doesn't write. Wayne Cooley here for while in the morning. Letter on 2nd mail. [short note in shorthand, in quotes, followed by………..] Dad & I out home to dinner. In pm. I was at Jeans, library & here. Everyone you saw & spoke to was so sleepy & tired. I took Ford home early at nite. Raked part of the yard. Ate, cleaned up, & went to sleep a little after 7:00.

My comments: She mentioned May Day, but not exchanging any May Baskets with anyone. Did they do that back then? Or, just the kids. We did, out in the country, when I was a kid. [Ours were usually primarily popcorn, it seems I recall!]
