75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - March 6, 1937

For 1937, for most days, there is both a short entry in a multi-year diary and a longer entry in a an appointment book like her diaries of past years. There is some indication the short entries were made later based on the longer entries. We still do not really know for sure.

Here is the short entry for Saturday, March 6:

To work. Swell day. Dad & I out home to heart dinner. Typed all pm. Started walking home & Edith & Fat R. picked me up. Ate & did up work. Peck called & wants me to come up tomorrow. Listened to Mitzi Green. Washed a few things.

Here is the long entry for a Saturday, March 6:

 Must be spring! To work about 8:30. I went  home to dinner. Edna Bylund's shower at Wolfe's. Norma S. came in and gave me the sweetest friendship bracelet. I walked out home. Fat & Edith picked me up. Did lot of typing. Really nice out. While doing dishes Peck called & wants me there tomorrow. Washed out my twin sweaters & to bed early.

My comments: We will learn more about "Peck" in coming days… 

Mitzi Green "child star" who appeared on Broadway at 16 in Rodger's and Hart's Babes in Arms (1937). Two of Green's numbers in the musical were "My Funny Valentine," and "The Lady is a Tramp."

Swellest day. Saw Mr. Peak at Cadden's. Came to office & typed for him. He'll let me know about a job soon. Pete took me up to school house in pm to take a speed test. Ate in town. At nite Leo to show & I skating. Keenest time. 2 kids from Jefferson. Stuck afterwards. 11:00.

Here is the long entry for Friday, March 5:

Real swellest day out. Bussy & I drove V-8 to town because Dad has sale today. About 10:30 Mr. Cadden called & wanted me to come over to his store. Mr. Peck was there. We came over here to the office & I typed for him. A little nervous. Really dressed swell. High balls! Driving cars. Went back over to Harry's & then they left. Bussy & Dad & I ate lunch at the Bank. Typed after dinner. Met Pete out in front. Took me to school house. Got 59 & 57 perfect but couldn't get 60. Drove Chevy out & Leo & I bro't it back in. Leo to show. I skating till 11:00. Had a keen time but wish Pete had been there!

My comments: Harry Cadden ran a clothing store toward the west end of Main Street. I have no idea who Mr. Peck was, but she was obviously impress and a bit intimidated by him.

No idea about the reference to "High balls! Driving cars." but I suspect that was what he had her typing… a little out of her normal "social circle" it appears. And he: "Really dressed swell."

Do you suppose he looked anything like this?:

Swell day. Thawed. Ate in town. Down to Jean's awhile. Knoll's in. ___ ___ berries. Walked & rode with Mts. at nite. Roads really wet. Did up worked & listened to radio.

[ Added much later: Arrow to Mts.: Eva & Maud Mountain & parents lived where Bonnie South lives.]

Here is the long entry for Thursday, March 4:

Cloudy & a little colder.  Not thawing so much. Up to Jean's a while. Dad ordered taxes at Carroll so Bussy & I ate alone. After dinner I took a few typing tests & then studied short hand. Got another lesson to send in. Knole & Honald's here during the day. Got quite nice out late in the afternoon. Got the paper and walked home. Rode as far a Mts. with them. Leo & Buss & I down to river in the buggy. Did up work & then Storm Lake Long Distance call. Listened to radio programs. To bed early

My comments: More mysteries than answers, today. "Storm Lake Long Distance" call - what was that?

It was Thursday, so The Coon Rapids Enterprise came out, but, where and how did she get it?

Knoll's and Honald's were farmers out east of town several miles. Almost surprised she knew them, then.

The Mountain family were neighbors, and most interesting folks. Even in my days, they were thought of, dare I say it, "old maid school teachers." VERY GOOD teachers, let me be sure to say. Teachers for many, many years in the community.

Finally, I'm fascinated by the "down to river in the buggy." We get so few insights into real, everyday life of the time. Was the river up, from the thaw? The river ran through the back of their property, so they would have gone back across the fields to get there.

Would they have looked something like this??  ;-)

Cloudy day but nice & warm. Typed "Quit Claim & Deed for Slim Timmons. Typed for long while after dinner, too. Got Shorthand Lesson ready to send in. Went up to school house about 3:30. Saw Huff about taking a Speed Test. Bussy & I walked home all the way. Raining & warm. Bussy got 12 A's. All A's in everything. Made ice cream. Washed dishes & separator. Listened to Fred Allen & Hit Parade "Goodnite My Love was first." (sic)

My comments: This song was #1 - again!

Was Huff the principal or business education teacher? She knows she is approaching the end of her Shorthand correspondence course, and needs an independent Speed Test.

Congratulations to Buzzy on the grades. Keep up the good work. He is actually in Third Grade. He is eight and a half years old…  ;-)

Another nice day. Took Ingersoll apart & mailed letters. Studied shorthand nearly all day long & got 2 lessons ready to send in. Only have 4 left. Ate dinner at the bank. Walked home. Got rides part of way with Turner & Mountain. Real sloppy & warm. Dad came late for supper. While I was getting ready for the show Rasmus & Carl came. Pete didn't come till about 8:30. To show! "Two in a Crowd." Joel McCrea & Constance Bennett. Just fair. Out on 46 - over the hill, "Why do you do it!"

My comments: Two in a Crowd was a 1936 romantic comedy film starring Joan Bennett and Joel McCrea. Also.

[Squiggly line around 'Monday, March 1' at top of page] Five months Pete & I have been going together, with very few quarrels, too. [between lines: "Tomorrow" & he smiled!]

A grand day. Typed most of morning. Bussy, Dad & I ate dinner in the back of the bank. Worked till 5:00. Rode part way with Lloyd Betts'. Walked rest of the way. Dad not home to supper. Listented to Fibber & Molly & Capt. Ricky on Lux. Real good. To bed early.

My comments: 'Cappy Ricks' was on Lux Radio Theater on March 1, 1937; see the link, right side, #7: you can download and listen to the 59:50 length show!

'Cappy Ricks' was a one-hour play on the radio; just as 'Captain Blood' was the week before. At the Cappy Ricks link, Cecil B. DeMille speaks the introduction of the play.

Donna Kinnick recognized for Volunteerism

Donna Kinnick recognized for Volunteerism

It is always a pleasure to share information about Volunteers - and this time it is a KINNICK:

KINNICK RECOGNIZED FOR VOLUNTEERISM

Donna Kinnick, a Bayard native who lives in Glidden and works at Community Insurance in Glidden, was named an Everyday Hero by Carroll County State Bank for her many hours of service to her community and school. Kinnick was nominated for the award by Angela Lensch, an instructor in the Glidden-Ralston school district.

“I have known Mrs. Kinnick for almost my whole life and have found her to be a huge part
of planning, organizing, and working at every event that involves our community for as long
as I can remember,” wrote Lensch in her nomination letter. “There are endless amounts of
people who have definitely benefited from her presence. She always shows great leadership
qualities and always makes sure to get any job done even though it’s a fully volunteer activity.
She has also made a concerted effort to synthesize planned activities to benefit the town of Glidden.”

Lensch noted that Kinnick has organized the Glidden Fun Days events, helps out weekly at the GR After School Program, organized the Box Tops program for the school, and volunteered time to help with concessions for the Glidden swim team. The latter, Lensch said, was a job no one else cared to do and Kinnick stepped forward, “... even though her own kids have grown and graduated. It was clearly done out of the kindness of her heart.”

“It is clearly evident that Mrs. Kinnink is well deserving of this outstanding person of our community distinction. Finally though, the best thing about Donna is that she is always a smile, kind- word, and one of the most warm-hearted person that you will find anywhere. Glidden is lucky to have a person such as this to support the people in this town!”

Donna is married to high school sweetheart, Lon Kinnick, and they live north of Glidden. They have two grown daughters, Keely and Kami.
