Here is the daily entry for Wednesday, June 7:

Pete doesn't feel very good. Did usual work. In town & washed. Rainy so had to hang clothes in house. Pete fixed Mrs. R's line. Ate, did dishes & went down town a minute. I did dishes out here. Pete laid down and read 'till 5:00. He didn't feel a bit good. Home & chores. Had french toast for supper. Bathed & went to bed. Put cold packs on.

My comments:

Hate to see my Dad hurting!!

French Toast… oh, yes...

Here is the daily entry for Tuesday, June 6:

Rainy when we got up. Went after cows with Pete. He milked. Did usual work. Pete up home till 10:00. In home. Picked berries and ate there. Home, cleaned up and went to Carroll. Pete went to Dr. with me. Everything OK. Thinks it's a boy. Only 2 wks. maybe. Head is down already. Shopped awhile. Got pt. ice cream. Down by hospital. Home. Pete went to Dr. He's OK too. Home & did usual work. Tired. Ate & went to bed.

My comments:

"Everything OK. Thinks it's a boy. Only 2 wks. maybe. Head is down already." Always watching for reports on THE BABY! Ok, that is me… amazing!

Good to hear Dr. say Dad is ok, as well. He still hurts, though, I'm sure.

Grandma Kinnick always had Raspberries, so assuming that is what they picked! Look good! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Monday, June 5:

Did usual work. Made a spice cake. Pete discing & planting beans. Waxed bedroom & painted wash stand. Painting kitchen table when Pete came in. Dick kicked him. In to Doctor. Up home an hour. Pete laid down. Wilson came. Found John Miller & got a supporter. Bud M. & Coon Cavanaugh milked & separated. Coon tight. Ate & Pete bathed. Went to bed but I didn't sleep much.

My comments:

Wow! OUCH! I've been kicked by a cow, but never by a work horse, of course!! Hazard of farming with the horses, I guess. Just about done with planting, using the team… but, still hurt, a lot!

Let's be positive and think about the delicious spice cake, instead! ;-)

 Slept till 7:00. Hurried with chores. Got ready for church. 17 in our class. Keen day. Home & ate, slept till 2:00. Pete out in garden. Did dishes. Went out and weeded the whole garden.
Folks stopped a minute on the way to Leo's. Chored, ate & went up home after soybeans. Home at 10:00.

My comments:

Dad needed soybean seeds to sow in the field the next day. Here are some soybeans...

Here is the daily entry for Saturday, June 3:

Didn't get up very early. Took Pete over to 80 to harrow in the beans. Did separator & went to Carroll to see about a cot. Ended up by getting one at Glidden. Home at 3:00. Pete worried. Cleaned the house. Pete chores early. Ate, bathed & shaved & we went in to town.
Sat down by Goodrich's awhile & then in middle in front of Garst's. Got groceries etc & came home at 12:00.

My comments:

Not sure about "cot" - and, wondered about "Pete worried"

Here is a WWII era cot… or, did "cot" mean a baby bed???

Here is the daily entry for Friday, June 2:

Sultry. Did usual work. Polly & LVene here at 8:30. Finished with the biggest jobs. Started raining at 11:30. I went over after Pete. Ate dinner, took him to work, did dishes, went in town. FInished ironing curtains. Got groceries, came home, hung most of curtains. Pete came with team at 7:00. He finished planting beans over on 80. Got supper, Pete milked, ate, talked till 10:00. Bathed & went to bed.

My comments:

Note that from yesterday's expense sheet, her groceries this day, June 2, were 26 cents.

Since we've already snooped, a bit, in the books, let's also look at the page before, for some of the expense we have read about earlier… Pop's shirt, for his birthday, was 1.00, paid by check. Another check was for 1.00, for 2 qt. paint. On the 25th, paid cash for 100# st. mash for the Egg a/c.
The last entry on the page included the haircut, groc, cleaning… 1.24 paid cash. Neat!

Here is the daily entry for Thursday, June 1:

 Pete up at 5:45. Me at 6:15. Did separator. Took Pete up after team. Polly & LVene here again & we nearly finished cleaning. Real tired at nite. Threatened to rain. Folks came after milk while we were eating supper. Wrote in books. Roberta had her tonsils out this morning. Pete shared and we went to bed.

My comments:

"Wrote in books." Here is what she actually wrote. H.E. is household expense. Notice paint, and turpentine, and wax, in addition to groceries. On 28th, the day the went to Springbook park and the a movie at night: H.E. (show, swim etc) - 1.42…. how about that?? ;-)
Looking ahead to June 3, First State Bank - Notes Payable - 50.00. Then on June 6, Dr. bill - for Eileen - 1.00 Health care costs have gone up a bit, in 75 years! ;-)
