Here is the daily entry for Thursday, April 7:

Colder than the Dickens. An awful wind. Had to burn icy wood. Had a time trying to keep warm. Stuffed the north kitchen windows. Bro't everything into the kitchen so it wouldn't freeze. All the roads blocked.

My comments: Cold April snow storm. Wow! I shiver just reading this. Burning icy wood in the stove not nice!

75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - April 6, 1938

Here is the daily entry for Wednesday, April 6:

Up late. Did usual work and went in to folks for dinner. Rollo working there. Did shopping. Sleeting pretty hard. Home quite early. I made a chocolate cake. Got supper, did dishes, separator & went to bed. Getting colder all the time. Got new lantern and mail-box.

My comments: Weather sounds about ours around here last week!

Tempted to show a chocolate cake, but I went for the mail-box, instead. Did it look like this?

75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - April 5, 1938

Here is the daily entry for Tuesday, April 5:

Up at 5:30. Pete took car with him over to work on the 80. Home to dinner. I took him back over after dinner. Getting colder all the time. Went in to town, got $26.00 from Mun. Light Plant. Did a little shopping, went over & got Pete & came home. Sleeting. He did the chores up early. Ate, did dishes & separator, took baths & went to bed.

My comments: Looks like she got paid well for her final work at the Light Plant. I was a bit surprised she didn't continue to work, but, I guess the 'old-way' of the newly-wed farm wife not working outside the farm home was still the practice.

Since a 'team' was mentioned earlier, I assumed the spring plowing was being done with horses. Do you suppose that was so? Here are horses plowing...

Here is the daily entry for Monday, April 4:

Sun out all day but not very warm. Took Pete to the other place in the P.M. Went in to town and told Lite Plant how much I wanted. Did a little shopping and went over after Pete. Home, did chores, dishes & separator, took baths & went to bed.

My comments: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was a 1937 film. She just wrote it as I show it… doesn't say why she wrote it…

75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - April 3, 1938

Here is the daily entry for Sunday, April 3:

Up at 9:00. Real late with work. Just doing separator when Pauline & Merle & LVene & Irene came. Went over to Norma's with them. No one home. Folks here to dinner. Dad to Ger's in pm. Cleaned up the yard. Got supper, chores early, did dishes, separator, took baths & went to bed.

My comments: I can just see LVene and Irene riding with Pauline and Merle… Mom would have squeezed in the back seat. No one Home! Assume they took her back…

75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - April 2, 1938

Here is the daily entry for Saturday, April 2:

Pete went up to the other place after dinner. I scrubbed and waxed my kitchen floor. Made a white nut cake. Pete shaved while I did dishes & separator. Cleaned up & went to town. Took in cream, did shopping. Went up home and talked until 11:00. Then came home & danced 'till after 12:00. To bed late.

My comments: A neat Saturday, and Saturday night. I am happy for them! ;-)

And, here is the journal entry for the cream they took to town that Saturday night! How about that! ;-)

75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - April 1, 1938

Here is the daily entry for Friday, April 1:

3 eggs

Up at 7:00. Got breakfast, ate rather hurriedly. Pete went up to Smith's to butcher. Did dishes and separator. Cleaned up the house, made an apple pie & cherry cake. Embroidered. We've gone together one year and a half now. 2 very important anniversaries. Pete came home about 6:00. Brought a rag rug from Loretta Brannan and a table cloth from the Smiths. The table cloth is lovely. Pete kidding me and I got a little put out about it but it didn't take very long to make up. Ate before chores. Did dishes & separator, took a bath & went to bed.

My comments: Love her emphasis on the "2" anniversaries! Lots of stuff going on here… interesting that she wrote it all out.

But, have to focus, today, on the butchering... got the locker in town, yesterday. They don't say whether beef or pork, but I think most likely beef, and maybe both. Mom and Dad always have beef and pork in the freezer - in town in the locker, or later, in the freezer at home, when I was growing up!
