Hot. Ironed. Listened to All Star Ball Game. Went swimming. Up town with Helen. Bussy with us. Saw Pete drive thru street.

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, July 7:

Hot again. Did up the work & ironed the rest of the day. Really a big one. Listened to All Star Ball Game. Got supper, did dishes, & went swimming. Up town with Helen awhile. Bussy with us. Just saw Pete drive thru' the streets. Disappointed that I didn't get to see him. It's really grand to love someone like I do him.


My comments: Love that last sentence! Wow!  ;-)

Appears they are going swimming in town pool, from mention the last few days.

Oh, my, look at the roster of the 1937 Major League Baseball All-Star Game!

From left to right: Lou Gehrig, Joe Cronin, Bill Dickey, Joe DiMaggio, Charlie Gehringer, Jimmie Foxx, and Hank Greenberg. All seven would eventually be elected to the Hall of Fame.

Hot. Washed. Slept in P.M. I, Bussy & Leo swimming & to Band Concert at nite.

Quite hot. Did up dishes etc & washed. I slept most all pm. Bussy & Leo & I went swimming & to Band Concert at nite. Home at 9:30.


My comments: Do you suppose the Band Concert looked something like this?

Did we work. Thought Ida's were coming but they didn't. Took car in pm. Drove out to Pete's. Went to Kinnick picnic at Springbrook. Grand time. Home at 1:00.

Here is the long entry for Monday, July 5:

Did we ever work. Thought Morris & Ida were coming. Fried 3 chickens & got all ready. Waited till 1:30 & then ate. They didn't come. Slept in pm. & then went in to town & out to Pete's. He's coming to picnic tonite. Ida Marie here. She & Leo & Folks left about 7:30. Pete came at 8:00. Seemed like I hadn't seen him for so long. Had a grand time at Spring Brook. Came right to Coon. Home at 1:00.

My comments: Also a holiday, obviously. Morris and Ida would be mother Dorothy's older brother and his wife, from Des Moines (the pharmacist). They were obviously disappointed not to see them.

The Kinnick picnic at Springbrook (Lake and Park) would be father Paul's siblings and families. Generally got together annually in the summer. Must have been a good crowd.

Mom was getting very attached to Pete - missed him after a few hours! Good sign!  ;-)

Keen day. Really hot. Fried chicken, took shower & got picnic. Took Lund's car to Spring Brook. Helen with me for supper. Pete did chores. Ate supper with the boys at the Park. To Spring Lake to the Dawn Dance.

Here is the long entry for Sunday, July 4: [bold]

Keen day but really hot. Fried chicken, took a shower, & got picnic dinner. Pete here at 1:00. Took Lund's car to Spring Lake [think she actually meant Spring Brook, as in short entry!]. "Kneaded bread." [Have no idea what that means!] There till 5:00. Helen came home with me. Pete did chores. Boys back here at 7:30. Ate supper at the Park & then went to Spring Lake to Dawn Dance. Home at 4:00. 

My comments: Think she was resting up all week for this very active, and long, day. Appears they went both to Spring Brook (a lake 15 or so miles to the Southeast) and Spring Lake (a lake 15 or so miles to the Northwest). Both great places to spend a holiday.

4th of July and Fried Chicken… hard combination to beat, correct?  ;-)

Sleepy but got lots of work done. Beat front room rug & cleaned all downstairs. Cleaned chicken at nite. Listened to Hit Parade.

Really sleepy. But did we ever get the work done. I beat the front room rug, & we cleaned the whole downstairs. At nite I cleaned a chicken. Leo went to town. Listened to the Hit Parade.

My comments: Still got up early. Still cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. I'm tired just thinking about the regime of work that they seemed so 'attached to.'

Nice day. Scrubbed up-stairs floors. Dad burning weeds. Pete came. Bill's car to Al Katy & Kittens dance. Keen time.

Nice again. Cleaned the house. I scrubbed all the upstairs floor & cleaned up. Dad burning the weeds. Pete came about 9:00. Took Bill's car to Carroll. Al Katy & his kittens. Were they ever good!  Pete, Elmer, Squeak, Clarence, Ed K., etc. Home at 3:30.

My comments: Sounds like they had a really great time at the dance, in Carroll. Pete took his Dad's car.

Al Katy and his Kittens may have been good, but they didn't make Google search…  ;-)

Nice day. I cleaned house & Mom the coal shed. Listened to radio & went to bed early. Got mulberries.

[Date circled, of course!] [They didn't know it, of course, but I would arrive in their lives in TWO YEARS!] Nice day again. Mom doing some more cleaning out in the coal house. I did the inside work. Did dishes & listed to the radio. Went to bed early. Got mulberries.

My comments: "Cleaning out in the coal house" certainly sounds like it must have been 'fun' - NOT! ;-)

Mulberries are good, however... We always had mulberry trees at home on the farm. ;-)
