Warm. Rained. Had V-8. To town with Leo. With Pete. Went home & changed clothes & went to Spring Lake dance. Keen dance. Verna there & Danced with Pete & Lew.
Here is the long entry for Saturday, July 31:
[Note along top: Almost ran off the rich once.]
In to work at 8:00. Real warm. Rained in p.m. Quit work about 5:00. Had V-8. Home early. Ate, cleaned up & went in to town with Leo & Bussy. With Pete. Out home & changed clothes for dance. Dad says he wishes I had corns; wouldn't be so crazy about dancing. Over to Pete's. The changed clothes. Left for Sp. Lake at 9:00. Keen dance. Verna there. Lew Clausen.
My comments: He Dad was very clever! Not! ;-)
Interesting how different clothes were required for dance at Spring Lake than for being in town! Any comments on that??? ;-)
Corns, anyone? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callus#Corns

Terribly warm & sticky. Made out meter record book & copied log sheets. Off work at 5:00. Waited for Dad at the Bk. Laurence Morman asked how it felt to be smart. I think he should ask somebody else! Ate, exercised, took shower, wrote letters, & went to bed early.
My comments: New work words: "meter record books & log sheets" - always new things to learn.
Dance is on Saturday night, this week… ;-)

Sultry out. Finished bills. Rained in pm. Pete at nite. To "Singing Marine." Real good. At Cafe with Helen & Bugger. Wallace & Clarice Married.
Here is the long entry for Thursday, July 29:
Real sultry out. Finished writing out the bills. Surely glad that's done. Verna & I up town after frozen bars while Simon was reading a meter. Rained in the afternoon. Pete came at 8:00 & we went to "The Singing Marine." I love Doris Weston. Malted Milks at Textors with Helen & Bugger. Home at 1:30. "Jimminy Christmas."
[Added note, at bottom: Wallace Arms & Clarice Semiaf (?) married. Imagine! Glad I quit when I did!]
My comments: Well, Eileen, "I quit when I did" is not the way your break-up with Wallace Arms in high school went… according to your diary, anyway. He dumped you, and you were devastated, after him being your 'boy-friend' for 'several years.' Glad 'you quit him' - of course. Working out well for both of you.

Here is the long entry for Thursday, July 22:
Slept 'till 8:30. Made cake frosting & finished the ironing. Started to Work at Lt. Plant after dinner. Nice place to work but a lot of it. Verna helping. All 3 of my bosses have had the name Charles. Charles Vandaworker, Charles Browning & Now Mr. Charles. CCV smoked gobs of cigarettes, CCB loved his cigars, & Mr. Charles is never without his pipe. Howard N. helping with the hay. Mowed lawn, ate late supper, & went to bed early.
My comments: Well, well… I knew it was coming, and now it is here. Will be interesting to read in the Enterprise about the new Light Plant opening. Mom always talked about being one of the first people to work in the office there!
Lots of smoking, in those day. Interesting the angle she took on her three bosses!
Do you suppose the one Mr. Charles smoked looked like one of these?

Henry and Nancy (Kinnick) Riddle family “wanderlust”
Henry and Nancy (Kinnick) Riddle family “wanderlust”
[This is one of a number of stories related to Kinnick family members over the years that I was privileged to receive from my friend, and fellow Kinnick researcher, Jean Rieper (1933-2010)(of Kilgore, TX, during our 15 or so years of correspondence). I publish them here at "The Kinnick Project" in tribute to her decades of family history research!]
“After following the many moves of Henry Riddle, we have to agree that he was filled with the “wanderlust.” He married Nancy Kinnick in 1817 and their 1st son was born in 1818. It would have been soon after, that Henry taking his young wife and baby, began his trek westward. An earlier history of the family says that Henry was first in Hardin County, Tennessee before going to Indiana. It would have been a very brief stay. He crossed Kentucky and ventured into the wilds of Indiana, and is found in the 1820 Federal Census of Delaware County, where he remained until sometime between 1827 and 1830. During this period he may have gone into Illinois and on his return purchased 80 acres of land in Fountain Co., Jan. 13, 1830. On Nov 15, of that same year he bought a Federal Patent of 40 acres in Pleasant Twp., Johnson County, Indiana, which is on the southern border of Marion County, the former home of this family. On Feb 23, 1831, Henry Riddle bought land from John McClain in Johnson County, and again on Oct 20, 1834, purchased 40 acres from the Federal Government.
“Again in 1837, Henry Riddle felt the call of the wild, this time pushing northward to St. Joseph County, Indiana on the Michigan border. He purchased four land patents from the Federal Government in Union Twp. Today a large lake in this twp is known as Riddles Lake. His land certificates #6967, 6968, 6969, 6970, dated Aug 10, 1837, St. Joseph County, Indiana contained 272 acres. Here his children attended school, Wiley grew to manhood and married in 1841. In 1846 he again sold out and went to Iowa, to what location is not known. Not liking the climate there, Henry returned to St. Joseph Co., Ind. In 1849 he purchased three hundred and twenty acres of land in Warren twp, where he resided until the death of his wife, Nancy, in 1854. At this time he gave his two eldest sons, Wiley and Benjamin, one-half of his real estate in 1855, and sold the remainder in 1856. Henry then stuck (sic)out for Kansas, perhaps his son, John H. accompanied him at this time. At the time of his settlement in Kansas, the trouble relative to its admission to the Union was rife, and he returned to St. Joseph County, Indiana, where he died and was buried by side of his wife. The years of hardships and toil involved in his constant search for a better place, took their toll at an early age for this pioneer couple. Their son, Wiley, remained in St. Joseph County, Indiana, where he died sometime before 1870. William and John H., also remained in the county, raied (sic) their families and died there. Only Benjamin inherited “the spirit of adventure” from his father.”

Warm. Made cake. Ironed. To Jefferson with Aunt Gertrude. "Romeo & Juliet." Had heck of a time finding Pete at nite. Good time [ran off sheet]
Here is the long entry for Wednesday, July 21:
Real warm again. Made burnt sugar cake. Did most of the ironing in forenoon. Went over to Aunt Gertrude's at 1:00. She took me to Jefferson in her new V-8. Saw "Romeo & Juliet" & "Talent Scout." Both of them were really good & for only 16 cents. Had a Sundae & came home. Cleaned up & the folks took me to town. Trouble finding Pete again. These darned Wednesday notes. Had a good time after we finally got together. Didn't go home till 1:00. We just can't get away from each other.
My comments: …well, I hope not! ;-)
Sounds like a fun after noon in Jefferson in the new car - to a double-feature movie!
Romeo & Juliet was a 1936 American Film adapted from the play by Shakespeare...
Talent Scout (1937) film - only 62 minutes long… B film, barely??

Washed in A.M. Real warm. Helen here. Rode out to Pete's. Talked to him about hail. Helen here to supper. In to Bk. Nite. Got Smoozies & went down to Band Concert.
Here is the long entry for Tuesday, July 20:
Up early. Washed in the morning. I'm kind of lazy for some reason. Real warm in pm. I embroidered awhile, Helen came out, I cleaned up, we went to town & then out to Pete's. 70 acres of their corn is hurt. His head feels OK. Thank goodness. Helen here for supper. We went in to town to Bk Nite. $320. Dorothy Miller got $100 of it. "15 Maiden Lane" was the show. A Jewelry Store Mystery. With the folks afterwards. Got Smoozies & went & listened to Band Concert.
My comments: "'15 Maiden Lane' was a 1936 crime film about an insurance investigator (Claire Trevor) who infiltrates a gang planning to steal jewels from the eponymous building on Maiden Lane in the Fulton Street District of Mahattan."

Swell day. Lots of hail repts. Roy Anderson had a heavy loss. Afraid Pete's is hurt quite badly -----
All of us lazy. Went riding & to town in pm. Embroidered. Did up nite work & set on the porch awhile. Bed at 9:00.
Here is the long entry for Monday, July 19:
[At top of page: If I stood much closer I'd be in back of you. Marx. - no doubt from the movie the prior night!]
Warmer & sunny. Quite a lot of hail damage here. Wonder what Pete's doing; besides thinking of me. Hope his head's O.K… All morning getting dishes done. Every one sleepy. I got dinner. Mom laid down awhile. Did dishes & Bussy & I went to town. Got embroidery wk. Drove out to Pete's. Hail really fixed their corn. Bet he's sick about it. Now we can't get married I suppose! - - -
Embroidered awhile & did up the nite work. Chasing the sheep. They're really nice. Listened to radio & set out on porch. To bed at 9:00.
[along bottom: "Little bit of a shed"]
My comments: Oh, my. Hail damage is devastating. You have know idea how bad it might be - makes so much difference at what stage the corn is at.
First mention of sheep. Suppose they are new?

Here is the long entry for Sunday, July 18:
Cool again. Up before 7:00. Fried 2 chickens on range, made salad & got ready for the picnic. Pete here before 12:00. He had a bad gash in his head. Went to the doctor. Shaved it! Poor kid. Went to Spring Brook in the storm. Ate in car. Hailed. Rode around. To Bayard. Saw Gers. To Scranton & Jefferson to "A Day at the Races." Grand. Looking for [shorthand note]. Home early. Pete pretending like I was someone else.
My comments: Life happens in the strangest ways, somehow. We never know what the next day will bring… suppose that is good! ;-)

Slept late again. Nice and cool. Fire in the range. Made spice & chocolate cakes & oatmeal cookies. Fried chicken for dinner. Cleaned whole downstairs in afternoon. The keenest day ever. Nice & cool; just right to work. Slept till nearly 9:00. Did sep., dishes, cleaned upstairs, & made some sticky chic. frosting. Cleaned a little downstairs, hemmed front room curtains. Got supper, Lyle here a little bit, did dishes, mowed part of the lawn, washed milk things, cleaned up & went to bed early. Looked at catalogs, my moving picture. Helen called & wondered if Pete & I were going to the dance.
Darn this cold sore; I'd surely have gone if it weren't for it. Goodnite Diary!
My comments: Creamed eggs on toast! Yum! ;-)
It is even better than it looks... I like the chunks of egg a littler larger, personally! ;-) You?

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, July 14:
Sultry. Did up the usual work. Cleaned & fired chicken for dinner. Slept before Noon & afternoon. I'm really getting to be a sleepy head. Rained about 4:00. Carried rugs down to combine. Sat in truck during most of it. Both cars stuck. Fixed my hair, made doughnuts, did up nite wk & went to town. With Helen B., Jean K., & Helen Jensen 'till 9:00. Did shopping & saw Pete. Boys got quart of ice cream & we went riding to pool in the V-8. I have a mean cole sore. Pete & I not doing too well to begin with. Talked it over when we got alone & things progressed nicely until 1:00, when we had to say goodbye. "You know I should be getting you an engagement ring" - - - - - -
My comments: How about that last line. I'd say that is progress.. 'cole' sore or not!! ;-)
Left over from yesterday - rumble seat! ;-)

Here is the short entry for Tuesday, July 13:
Ironed. Washed windows. Bk nite matinee. Washed hair. Helen & I to Beth's party for Leora. Rained. Rode in Harold Jn's new car, in rumble seat.
Here is the long entry for Tuesday, July 13:
Pretty warm. Got all the ironing done up early. Washed the windows & went in town & got new curtains. To Bank Nite matinee in pm. Washed my hair. "Thunder Over The City." Edward Arnold. Not too good but the Theatre is quite nice. At 6:00 Helen came out & we went to Beth's to the dinner party for Leora. Rained.
Impressions: [Underlined. Each name underlined; including on the side entries.]
Leora: Not changed only in figure "to the tune of about 20#."
Violet: Quiet as ever. Dieting at lot. Thicker thru' the hips.
Liz: Perhaps a little more obstinate. Rather clever. Same size.
Helen: Of course she's lots larger. Likes me more than last yr. Why?
Valeria: Says she weighs 105#. Wishes they'd ask her to play piano.
June: Little better looking & neater. Too much make-up.
Edith R: Still large & after the boys.
Beth: Loves to tell about college, Dale & Douglas.
Jean K: Same old thing only thinks she's in love.
Dorothy T: Nervous & slender as ever, anxious to go to the dance with Doug A.
Margie: A little married woman. Less gay & popular. Too bad.
[Along top] Wonder what the rest of them thought of me!
My comments: I have no idea why all the comments on those who were there. I get the impression most hadn't seen each other for at least a year. Frankly, don't recognize most of the names…
The movie was actually: "Thunder in the City" starring Edward G. Robinson! ;-) Did he ever make a 'good' movie? Not that I ever saw - sorry, just one opinion. ;-)

Ate supper there too. Then to Guthrie to the show "She met him in Paris." Really was cute. Got ice cream & ate it on way home. Absolutely [off edge of page; may have been more - cannot tell]
My comments: Movie actually "I Met Him in Paris."

"What is a man, If his chief good & market of his time Be but to sleep and feed? A beast, no more."
------
Leo & Elmer here making hay. Fixed lemonade and cake for them. Listened to radio programs & went to bed early.
My comments: Lemonade and cake a very common 'lunch' for the farm women to bring 'to the field' for men making hay. I was beneficiary often during high school. Make a lot of hay! Always a good excuse to stop and sit in the shade for awhile!
Her cake probably didn't look like this, but I could not pass up this photo! ;-)

Hot again. Did up the work & ironed the rest of the day. Really a big one. Listened to All Star Ball Game. Got supper, did dishes, & went swimming. Up town with Helen awhile. Bussy with us. Just saw Pete drive thru' the streets. Disappointed that I didn't get to see him. It's really grand to love someone like I do him.
My comments: Love that last sentence! Wow! ;-)
Appears they are going swimming in town pool, from mention the last few days.
Oh, my, look at the roster of the 1937 Major League Baseball All-Star Game!
From left to right: Lou Gehrig, Joe Cronin, Bill Dickey, Joe DiMaggio, Charlie Gehringer, Jimmie Foxx, and Hank Greenberg. All seven would eventually be elected to the Hall of Fame.
