75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - March 13, 1937

 75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - March 13, 1937

This entry is the daily post on this blog from the diary of eighteen year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date.

Since midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.

For 1937, for most days, there is both a short entry in a multi-year diary and a longer entry in a an appointment book like her diaries of past years. There is some indication the short entries were made later based on the longer entries. We still do not really know for sure.

WELL, now we know. March 8 was the last entry in the 'longer' appointment book, like in prior years. March 9 begins only entries in the shorter, 5 year diary format. How long will this last???

Here is the entry for Saturday, March 13:

Up at 8:00. Spitting snow. Got new gray skirt. Ina & Ermal here [added later: Ina Smith - maybe that's the Smith Estate. Her husband died early in life - Ermal (Betts) her daughter]. Ate at Rhineharts [added later: Archie Rhinehart's folks ran D & D cafe across street where Keeley Show Shop is] with them. Did shopping & went home early. Did dishes & separator, took a bath. Leo to Ida's, her birthday. Bed early. Had 13 hrs sleep.

My comments: Her 'later additions' are in much bolder hand stroke. You kind of get a feeling we are into the fifties by the time she is making these additions, by some of the reference. Very interesting.

Glad to have the Smith thing figured out. Ermal was daughter of Ina - Ermal later married a Betts. I remember Ermal Betts being mentioned… don't think I really knew her. Perhaps one of my readers here can fill me in…  ;-)

Do you suppose the gray skirt looked anything like this?  ;-)

  1. Bill, I am doing research on my Pierce family. Ermal was a daughter of Ina Pierce. She was my 2nd cousin 2x removed. She married Dale A Betts and they lived in Des Moines when they died.
