Here is the short entry for Sunday, May 30:

Folks to Wms Kinnick picnic. Bussy & I stayed home. Bussy's side. Washed some things. Cleaned up & Pete came at 8:00. [nearly full line of shorthand] Rained.

Here is the long entry for Sunday, May 30:

Slept till 9:30 & am still tired. Did dishes, cleaned upstairs. Mom getting picnic dinner. Leo, Mom, & Dad to Wms-Kinnick picnic. Bussy & I stayed home. Afraid Bussy's rise would bother. Cleaned downstairs, did separator after dinner. Did some washing. Cleaned up & got ready. Pete came about 8:00. [2 lines of shorthand notes.] Rained awfully hard at nite. [later added, near shorthand: Had to crank the car. And, "would you marry me next year"]

My comments: This was Memorial Day in 1937. It appears Monday was a work holiday, but Memorial Day was on the 30th.

The Williams-Kinnick, or Kinnick-Williams, picnic was a fixture in the family well into the 1950s or beyond. These were the descendants of AP & Nettie (Williams) Kinnick and their 5 children.

This is a photo of the group, a few years earlier…

Keenest day. Sleepy. Took car out by Campbells & slept awhile. Sleepy after dinner so I laid on floor in back room. CCB found me. Worked at Garst's until 12:00. Are I tired.

Here is the long entry for Saturday, May 29:

Keenest day. Up at 7:00. Pancakes in sep. house. Wore eyelet again this year. Am I economical! So hot & did I ever get sleepy. About 10 took the car out by Campbells & slept for awhile. Out home alone for dinner. Sleepy again after dinner so I laid down in back room for an hour. CCB didn't care. Worked till 5:00. Got white shoes. Home to supper & then worked at Garst's until 12:00. Are I tired.

My comments: Tired girl! Wonder where Campbells is and why she went there?

Pancakes!  We know it this time!

Keen day. Out to Helen's awhile. Got white shoes at Garst's. With Pete - Helen & Elmer to Carroll to Pete Kuhl dance & 7spice sisters. Good time but my feet got so tired. Orville, Ed, Elmer, Dick.

Here is the long entry for Friday, May 28:

Keen Day. Thought I'd left my key at home & at about 9:40 I found it in my purse. Did Rex ever kid me. I went home alone at Noon. Mr. B. at sale so I went out to Helen's awhile. Ate rhubarb and talked. Back at 3:30. Thought I'd lost my keys again. Rex found them in the car. - - - he would, of all people. - - - got white shoes Garst's. Home alone. Ironed, look bath, & Pete, Elmer & Helen & I Carroll to Pete Kuhl & 7 Spice Sisters. Good time but feet really got tired. [Few shorthand notes] Orville, Dick, Elmer, Ed,

My comments: Found one reference on Pete Kuhl and his several bands, over the years. No photos.

How about some rhubarb?

Here is the short entry for Thursday, May 27:

Nice day. Helen & I out to Pete's. Got ready for Commt. With Helen & Elmer. To Boehlers afterwards. Out on Betts road.

Here is the long entry for Thursday, May 27:

Nice day & really hot. Mr. Browning to the farm all morning. Bussy & I out home to dinner at Noon. In pm. had the Ford fixed & then Helen & I went out to Petes. Took our pictures. Back to town witting in my car. Helen, Edith, Marian G. & I. Home at 5:00. Washed some things & got ready for the Commencement. Pete came at 8:00. WIth Helen & Elmer to Boehler's afterwards. [5 lines of shorthand notes!]

My comments: Second day in a row "out to Pete's" during the day…

Commencement was apparently still a bit deal to her! No details, but a 'must do.'

I'd like to see 'Took our pictures' - wonder what that was?

Do you suppose the 1937 Commencement program looked like this one from her 1936?

Here is the short entry for Wednesday, May 26:

Typed. Mr. B. to Carroll. Drove out to Pete's in storm after dinner. Went to sleep by the school house. To skating rink watching the Sophs. Bud asked me to dance. I didn't. With Pete afterwards in Paulines' Ford. Big tree again.

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, May 26:

My finger that I hurt when I caught the ball bothered my typing. Typed till 10:30 & the(n) Mr. Browning went to Carroll. Got new stockings & handkerchiefs. Dad & I home to dinner. Bussy on picnic. I drove out to Pete's after dinner in the storm. Drove up to Ida Marie's school & went to sleep. To skating rink watching 'Sophomores.' Out home long enough to change clothes & then in skating with Lund's. Bud Boots asked me to dance but I had on rubber soles so didn't. Now I suppose he's mad! Who cares! With Pete afterwards in Paulines's Ford. Big tree again. [few shorthand notes] 1:00!

My comments: Quite a day!!

Pauline is Pete's older sister - she was a nurse by then, I'm pretty sure.

Glad to see Pete and Eileen stayed out late, together!!  ;-)

This photo is of Star School, a rural one-room country school near Pete's families farm, where he and all his sibling went, as well as my wife, and her parents, as well! [I doubt this was "Ida Marie's" school, but it is a one-room country school like hers!]

Here is the long entry for Tuesday, May 25:

Dad & I up there afterwards. Had ice cream & angel food. Bussy asleep in the car.

My comments: Angel Food Cake! Yum! We always god an angel food cake for our birthdays.

Here is Eileen, probably about ten years later, hold someone's Angel Food Birthday Cake with White Frosting… one of my favorite photos - nice of Mom, too! ;-)

Here is the short entry for Monday, May 24:

Ila Jean at office awhile. Rode around at 1:00. Out past Pete's. Jean & Vi [added later: Violet Lachenmaier] here awhile. Typed all pm. Folks & Leo went to Class Play. Bussy & I stayed home.

Here is the long entry for Monday, May 24:

Nice & warm but real windy & dusty. Ila Jean here awhile. Typed most of morning. Rasmus & Howard out home to dinner with Buzz & me at Noon. Brought them in & I rode around 'till 1:30. Out past Pete's but didn't talk to him. Jean & Vi here awhile. Took dictation & typed all pm. 'till after 5:00. Did shopping & we went home about 6:00. Got supper, I did dishes & all the milk pails etc. & the folks & Leo went to the Class Play. Bussy & I stayed home. Went to sleep on Studio Couch.

My comments: Still concerned about relationship with Pete, it appears. Seems ok. Another reminder that her Dad is a member of the School Board, so they do take in some school activities.

Here is the short entry for Sunday, May 23:

Cleaned the house. Curled Mrs. Lund's hair. Pete didn't come 'till 8:00. Got to digging up the past. Settled everything OK though at the artesian well. [few shorthand symbols]

Here is the long entry for Sunday, May 23:

Up at 7:30. Got breakfast, did dishes, separator, cleaned upstairs, got dinner, cleaned downstairs, ironed, went to town, curled Mrs. Lund's hair & went home. Took a bath. Pete didn't come till nearly 8:00. Both of us started out feeling keen. Then he got to digging up the past. Settled it finally, I hope. [Three lines of shorthand notes]

My comments: …by the artesian well! ;-)

From Wikipedia:
An artesian aquifer is a confined aquifer containing groundwater under positive pressure. This causes the water level in a well to rise to a point where hydrostatic equilibrium has been reached. This type of well is called an artesian well. Water may even reach the ground surface if the natural pressure is high enough, in which case the well is called a flowing artesian well.

I did dishes & listened to First Niters. Pete came quite late. Stayed home. Where [followed by four lines of shorthand - 1:00 out in middle]

My comments: May Fete? Must have been a community event.

From the Coon Rapids Enterprise, 75 Years Ago Column, May 17, 2012 editions;

"The second annual May Fete of the Coon Rapids School will be held May 14, in the gymnasium.
The high spot of the evening will be the crowning of Miss Edith Parker as May Queen. Miss Parker
was elected by popular vote from a list of senior girls, and was announced Friday at the Junior Senior
banquet. She will reign over the World Voyage which will be represented by dances and games of foreign land all in costume. Ten attendants, the other candidates, will accompany her."

In Google, May Fete 1937 brought up a page from the Palo Alto Historical Association and this photo, under May Fete Parade, 1937 or 1938. Do you remember such a celebration?

Not so cold but kinda cloudy. Finished Bussy's Indian suit, got breakfast & came to work alone at about 9:00. Jean here awhile. Heard from Ray & Sandy. Bussy & I took the car home. I was going to iron [added later: Gas] but couldn't get it to work. Ate early, did the dishes, Dad to town, Buzz & I to bed at 8:00.

Windy. Helen B. here. Typed. Made Bussy's Indian Suit. Skating with Liz, Helen, & Prissie. Took kids riding. Got stuck. Met Pete. Mad. Said goodnite & that was all. Am I puzzled.

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, May 19:

Windy & none to warm. Wrote letters & dusted most of morning. Browning to farm. All of us home to dinner. Jean & I were going to Carroll but didn't. Helen B. here awhile in pm. Wrote mechanic's liens for M.B. Keister. Home at 5:00. Made Bussys Indian suit & got ready to skate. With Liz, Helen, & Prissie. Poor crowd so we left early & went riding. Liz, Kenny P., & Prissie; followed Doug Coder all over. Stuck in Pete Heaters. Finally got out. Took the kids home & then met Pete. Was he ever mad about something. I can't figure it out. Told him just where I'd been. Rode in Ford about 15 minutes. Just "goodnite." Am I puzzled!

My comments: I am puzzled, as well. Just a bad day? Or was he upset with her 'running around' with the 'skating' crowd? ;-)

M.B. Keister owned the lumber yard and other things. Quite a 'man about town.'

Keen day. Cleaned the house & planted flowers. Ray Schauf's here awhile. Pete came about 7:30. "When You're in Love." Sat with Helen & Elmer. 4 mile drive.

Here is the long entry for Sunday, May 16:

Keen day. Slept 'till 7:00. Washed separator & dishes, cleaned upstairs & got dinner in morning. In pm. cleaned downstair's rooms & planted flowers & ironed. Lyle & Ray Schauf's out home awhile. Pete came about 7:30. We went to "When You're in Love." Sat with Helen & Elmer. Quite good. 4 mile drive!

My comments: Lyle Kinnick was a first cousin, same age as Mom. Ray Schauf's wife was Helen Brock, daughter of Josephine (Williams) Brock [Mom's first cousin 1 gen removed]. Schauf's were a regular part of our extended families in the 1940s and 1950s as well. They lived in the Bayard area, within a 10 mile radius of our Coon Rapids homes.

Raining. Mr. B. & Dad to Carroll again. Home to dinner & then drove out to Pete's. No one there. With Helen B. to library & then home. Bussy's side bothering. Did dishes & went to bed. "Sept In the Rain" was first.

Read most of the afternoon. With Helen B. - to library & then home. Bussy's side bothered him. He & Leo to town. I did dishes & went to bed "Sept in the Rain."

My comments: First on the Hit Parade - I'm sure she meant!  ;-)

From Wikipedia: "September in the Rain" is a popular song by Harry Warren and Al Dubin, published in 1937. The song was introduced by James Melton in the film Melody for Two. It has become a standard, having been recorded by many artists since

Helen here in pm. Had her hair set. Pete came at 8:30. Went with Elmer & Helen. Had grand time. All but Bud Boots following me around. Talked about it on the way home. Glad it's over with. Dawn came too soon.

Here is the long entry for Friday, May 14:

Nicer out but still quite cold. Dad to Carroll again. Bussy & I had the Chevy. Helen B. here in pm. She & I had our hair set. She really had a time rinsing mine. Went home about 5:00. Did separator & got ready for the dance. All of us listening to Don Ameche. Pete came about 8:30. We went with Elmer & Helen. Had a grand time on the way up but Bud Boots was there. Kept following me around. Spoiled both Pete & my time while at the dance. Talked about it for long time on the way home. Glad it's over with. Everything OK when we left only dawn came too soon.

My comments: Dawn came to soon.

I was about to speculate on the state of their relationship… but I think this probably tells a good bit of the story. Talk things out. That is very important… then as well as now! What do you think?

All of us listening to Don Ameche.

Here is the short entry for Thursday, May 13:
Cold out. To Ray Hagaman's after dinner. Drove all over. Mr. B. gone. Went to bed early.

Here is the long entry for Thursday, May 13:

Awfully cold out. Up early. Got breakfast. Mr. Browning there to see Dad. Dad & he to Carroll again so Bussy & I brought in the Chevy. Bussy & I out home to dinner. I went out to Roy Hagaman's after
afterwords & then drove all over the country. More fun. Read most all afternoon. Bussy had his haircut & then we went home. With Helen Bower in pm. Did separator, made white cake & got supper. Washed hair, did dishes & went to bed early.

My comments: Would the meal below more likely have been "dinner" or "supper" in 1937 at the Kinnick farm residence? She was very precise in what she called each meal, but I am uncertain which was large or more formal and which was lighter and less formal - or another combination. What do you think?  ;-)

Here is the short entry for Wednesday, May 12:

Keen day. Mr. Browning in Carroll. Bussy's appendix bothering. Came skating with Lizzie. Skated with Bill Vader. Took Doug, Lizzie, & Kenny home. Home before 12:00.

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, May 12:

Keen day after the rain. Reading "Sheets in the Wind." Mr. Browning gone to Carroll. Can't imagine why I don't hear from Bud. Took Bussy to the Dr. at Noon. It's his appendix bothering him. Dad in Carroll so Leo came in after me at Noon. Drove around before coming to work. Took Bussy home at 4:00. Did dishes & separator. Came skating with Lizzie. Rode around till after 8:00. Quite some fun. Really missed Bud. Balloon skate with Bill Vader. Took Doug, Liz & Kenny P. home. Home before 12:00.

My comments: Really with a different crowd - and in a different mood, it seem, when she is skating!

Reading "Sheets in the Wind." she said. Sheet in the Wind was a 1934 book from Chapman & Hall, publishers, 448 pages, written by author Ridgwell Cullum. I found it in Google Books, but it had no cover photo, no description, no reviews. Abe Books had no listing. Amazon had two or three, all saying 1932… questionable sources. It is listed in 26 libraries around the world. Other books by the same author are shown my Google Books.

The author has several interesting bios:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0191643/bio
http://www.angelfire.com/planet/edwardian/cullum.htm has a Bibliography of this books - it says 1932, as well. It all has this portrait!

Here is the short entry for Monday, May 10:

Jean at office awhile. With Edith & Lenore. Got wrist watch after work. Curled Edith's hair. Started walking home. Rode "Trucks." Went to bed early.

Here is the long entry for Monday, May 10:

Swell day. Got up at 6:00. Worked on Homestead papers. Jean here awhile. Bussy & I home to dinner. Greenwaldt gone. Read & cut out most of afternoon. With Edith & Lenore after words. Got wrist watch. Curled Ediths hair. Started walking home but "Trucks" picked me up. Ate about 8:00. Just got the dishes done & went to bed. Really tired.

My comments: Not sure about "Greenwaldt gone." and "Read & cut out most of afternoon." meant. Maybe future days will make clearer.

The Wrist Watch purchase was interesting. Was it her first?

Was it an Elgin?

Here is the long entry for Sunday, May 9:

Up at 7:00, got breakfast, cleaned, upstairs, down, did some washing. Folks planted potatoes, Leo plowed, folks to Lil's for dinner. Ironed, did separator, listened to radio, fixed nails. Folks just got home & Pete came. I still in my overalls. Got dressed up. Waited till nearly 8:00 & then went to the show. "One In a Million." Best ever. Elmer, Helen Pete & I over to the Cafe. Home real early."Best e

My comments: "Best ever" - know that is a movie review!  "I still in my overalls."

No movie poster image. May have been two movies of the same name in 1937. Seems some confusion on Google and WIkipedia entries….

I wanted to share this coverall photo of Eileen anyway!  With Buzzy and me, maybe 7-8 years later. She still looked good in the coveralls!  ;-)

Here is the long entry for Saturday, May 8:

Kind of a damp, warm day. Up at 6:30. Had to hurry. Fixed the office till 10:00. New rugs. I brought in the Ford after dinner. Down skating till nearly 4:00. Got out a paper & then over to Bowers, had coat & suit cleaned, got groceries & went home. Ate supper, cleaned up a little & we kids came back to town. Did shopping & then I went skating awhile. Boy in blue shirt bought me pop. Rowdy bunch. Pete took me home.

My comments: "Pete took me home." I love to see that!  ;-)

"In 1937 the United States soft drink industry was growing rapidly.  The popular brands of the period included familiar and not so familiar names as Coca Cola, 7 Up, Kist, Bubble Up, Cleo Cola, Cheer Up, Orange Crush, Red Rock Cola, Nesbitt's, Sunspot, Double Cola, Canada Dry, Nu-Grape, Mission Orange and Vernor's . The depression was over and people's thirst for all things was up and that included soda." From:
