75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - March 31, 1937

 75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - March 31, 1937

This entry is the daily post on this blog from the diary of eighteen year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date.

Since midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.

Here is the short entry for Wednesday, March 31:

Windy. Ripped suit all morning. typed all pm. Walked home. Ate & did dishes. Washed out under wear. "This Years Kisses" first again. Dad went to the Musicale at school house.

Here is the long entry for Wednesday, March 31:

Real nice out but a little windy. Ripped suit all morning & part of the afternoon. Finally finished it. Typed most of pm. on Muensterman estate. Mailed letters & up at Jean's a little bit. Walked home at nite. Ate & did dishes. Washed socks & under clothes & listened to New Campbell program. Fred Allen & Lucky Strike. "This Years Kisses" again. Dad at Musical program at school.

My comments: Campbell sponsored Fred Allen, off and on:

1936 Campbell's Soup Presents George Burns and Gracie Allen1937 George Burns and Gracie Allen [for Grape Nuts]

Later, Campbell sponsored the Mercury Theater.

Fred Allen went with Hormel… Radio advertising was trying to find itself.  ;-)

 75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - March 30, 1937

Since midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.

Here is the short entry for Tuesday, March 30:

Ripped Dad's pants for suit. Typed for Dr. Gertrude. Rode with Bill Mt. Bk nite "Society Dr." At S.S. Cafe. Pete in pm. He finally went to dentist. [Arrow to Bill - Maude Mountain's Dad] [Arrow to Ripped: Made suit out of Dad' old one for me.]

Here is the long entry for Tuesday, March 30:

Didn't have a bit of trouble getting up & not a bit tired all day. Nice out. Ripped dad's pants in am. [Note added: made me a suit to of his] Typed for Dr. Gertrude in pm. Made an extra dollar. Got Crack Jax, rode out with Bill Mt. in new Plymouth. Walked rest of the way. Ate early, I did dishes & then came in to Bk Nite with the folks. Rt Taylor in "Society Dr." Really keen. With Edith, Harold J., Thruman & Erna & Yippy at S. Side Cafe after. Had a coke. Took boys home & then went home with the folks.
"Snoozies"
Pete here in pm. - Went to see the dentist finally.

My comments: Very frugal to use an old suit to make a new suit. Depression was not that distant!  ;-)

Society Doctor was a 1935 movie - one of the stars was Robert Taylor.

Plymouth was only car that built a million cars in the first six years of existence.

 75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - March 29, 1937

This entry is the daily post on this blog from the diary of eighteen year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date.

Since midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.

Here is the entry for Monday, March 29:

Cloudy, not cold. Rode out to corner with Edith Parker. Walked rest of way. Listened to Fibber & Molly. To Carroll to dance. Home about 2:00. In the house about 3:00. "You old Meany."

Here is the long entry for Monday, March 29:

[word: "pro-curler" added across top] Not very cold but cloudy. Mr. Browning had the fire going nicely when I got here. [She had underlined that sentence, later] Typed Smith & Muensterman case. [underlined all but first word, later] Bussy had his teeth cleaned after school. Rode out to corner with Edith Parker. Sat on D. Sigler's lap. Some thrill. Walked rest of way home. [Sentence underlined, later] Cleaned up & listened to Fibber & Molly. Down to the barn watching them milk while waiting for Pete. [Whole sentence underlined later] Came a little after 8:00. Had a good time. Got there in time for the 1st dance. Edith, Harold, I. Edith, Kenneth, Lee Davidison, Orville, Ed Kult there from our bunch. Home about 2:00. In house about 3:00. "You old Mean."

My comments: I'll let you interpret the last three sentences…  ;-) [Don't think she wanted to go in!]

I'm going back to Sunday: "Rogers new Chrysler" - what did a 1937 new Chrysler look like?

Perhaps like this:

Here is the short entry for Sunday, March 28:

Not a very pretty Easter. Went in to Church. Everyone there. Over to Lund's in pm. Rogers new Chrysler. Pete & I to "Charge of the Light Brigade." Good show. "Just love to touch you - hold you" - - "Little Devil."

Here is the long entry for Sunday, March 28:

Not a very pretty Easter. Not too cold though. Did separator & straightened up the house. Went into town with Dad to church. Saw Helen, Beth, Fat, Harold. Everyone was there. I had to sit in the League room. Home alone for dinner. Went over to Lund's in pm. Rode in Roger's new Chrysler. Harold, Lenore & YIppy came after Edith. I went home about 6:00. Cleaned up & Pete came about 8:00. "Charge of the Light Brigade." Good show. 4 mile drive. Just love to touch you, hold you. Little devil.

My comments: An interesting way to spend an Easter Sunday. Some insight into their family life, is seems.

Here is the short entry for Saturday, March 27:

Nice & sunny. Typed Smith estate. Studied shorthand. Jennie set my hair. Leo & Bussy came after me. Did dishes & ironed a little. Leo has a sore boil. To bed early.

Here is the long entry for Saturday, March 27:

Still quite cold but nice & sunny. That helps some. Letters from & to Madonna. Typed & worked Smith estate all am. Dad & I home to dinner. To date I've seen 7 meadow larks, 1 blue bird & 1 cardinal & 1 robin. [the bird numbers were underlined, later] Studied 1) (sic) most all afternoon. Had Jennie set my hair at 5:00. Dad went home. I ate at Lund's. Leo & Bussy came after me. Did dishes & ironed a little. Leo has an awful sore boil. To bed early.

My comments: Is that Jennie Herron that set her hair, or another Jennie?

Leo had a boil. Have  you had a boil? They hurt!

Boil: A boil, also called a furuncle, is a deep folliculitis, infection of the hair follicle. It is most commonly caused by infection by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, resulting in a painful swollen area on the skin caused by an accumulation of pus and dead tissue. [Source: Wikipedia]

OH, THE EMBARRASSMENT! I just found that I do have the the full page entries, from March 9 on… they were just mis-filed, and I've been "getting along" - not very well - without them. So, I'll pick up today; then, in the following days, I'll go back and add the longer entries, and make a link here, to the revised pages, for those of you interested. SORRY!  ;-)

Here is the short entry for Friday, March 26:

Not very Eastery weather. Studied sht. hand most of the day. Louise's out home at Noon. Home with Leo. Pete & I went skating. Had a really good time. Dot Vanderloo [later added: Dorothy Vanderloo] there. Didn't want to come in house.

Here is the long entry for Friday, March 26:

Cloudy till about 9:30 & then the sun came out. Still pretty cloudy. Not very Eastery (sic) weather. Studied shorthand most of the day. Louise, Annie, & Dick went out home with me at Noon. I came back alone. Charles home. Went home about 4:00 with Leo. Washed my hair, fixed my nails & got ready for skating. Pete came about 8:00. Went out & fed the calf. Had good time skating. Dot Vanderloo there with Pete Oliver. [That sentence underlined, later] Don't know what time I got home. Didn't want to go. "Hotel," "Ni T." My fault!

My comments: Ah! Young folks after an evening together: "Didn't want to come in house." Do you remember that feeling? I do!  ;-)

First cousins, Annie, age almost 2, and Dick (I'm sure she meant Darrell), age5; children of mother's sister, Louise (Sorensen) Nielsen.

I do not know who Dorothy Vanderloo was, that Eileen would mention her, specifically. Do any of you, my readers?

Were they ice skating?

75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - March 25, 1937

This entry is the daily post on this blog from the diary of eighteen year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date.

Since midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.

For 1937, for most days, there is both a short entry in a multi-year diary and a longer entry in a an appointment book like her diaries of past years. There is some indication the short entries were made later based on the longer entries. We still do not really know for sure.

WELL, now we know. March 8 was the last entry in the 'longer' appointment book, like in prior years. March 9 begins only entries in the shorter, 5 year diary format. How long will this last???

Here is the entry for Thursday, March 25:

Snow on the ground. CCB at Guthrie. Mrs. Taylor [Browning's mother-in-law] here all pm. Walked home from Bett's corner. Nearly frozen when I got here. Went to sleep down stairs at nite.

My comments: I have no idea what "CCB at Gurthie" means, other it is Guthrie Center, a nearby town, 25 or so miles southeast.

Here is the entry for Wednesday, March 24:

All yellow & cloudy. Snowed & rained all pm. Typed on Smith estate. Real cold at nite. Dad & I shopping & got coal [added later: Coal for stove]. "This Year's Kisses" first on Hit Parade.

My comments: For those who many not read every day, the "Smith estate" papers she was typing for her lawyer employer had noting to do with Pete Smith, her boy friend, it was an unrelated family.

"This Year's Kisses" was a recording of Billie Holiday - see the lyrics.

Cold & Damp. Typed most of day. Reviewed shorthand. Waited at Bk [added later: Bank] for Dad 'till 6:00. Ate, did dishes, & came in to Bk Nite with the folks "Devil Is a Sissy." Surely was good. Home at 10:30.

My comments: The Devil Is a Sissy was a 1936 American MGM comedy drama film starring Freddie Bartholomew, Jackie Cooper and Mickey Rooney.

Snowed part of the morning. Changed the office all around. Typed. Bussy having Spring Vacation. Typed Anderson [later added: What Anderson?] case. Locked the key in office.

"Love only is stronger than death."

My comments: Doing a Google on the quote, it came up the final line from a poem, Moonlight Rainbow, by LILIAN. Narrandera, November, 1899. Page 48, Otago Witness, Issue 2388, 7 Dec 1899. Found in the National Library of New Zealand.

Cleaned the house, fixed nails, & went to Church. Sang in choir. Leo & I & Pete & folks to Lil's for dinner. Shut the sow stanchions. Pete home. Ida here. Pete came back early. Laid on cot. Says he's tired of farming. [last sentence underlined - later?]

My comments: I guess we all question what we are doing, sometimes. Pete saying he is tired of farming is an extreme, hard to imagine, thing to say - he continued to do it all his life. I wonder if he had something else in mind he wanted to do? Doubt that we'll ever know.

Here is a photo a couple of years later, possibly one of the earliest photos of him actually working on the farm:

Real nice. Browning's telling about Pete's car insurance. Rode part way home with Lund's. Got blouse material. Made it up at nite. Finished it about 9:30 and went to bed.

My comments: I sure am frustrated by the short entries only…  ;-(

She is obviously back still at work at Brownings law office. Such a curious thing she mentions he said something about Pete's car insurance - but we have no more information….  !?!?!

She got some blouse material and finished making it that night! WOW! She was good at it!  ;-)

Do you suppose it looked like one of these? These are 1937 ladies' blouse patterns available on Amazon.com.

Now its cold today. Wrote letters. Home alone to dinner. Snowed all pm. Ate & went skating with Erna. Pete there. Leo came for me at 11:00. Mad at Yippy M. [Added later: Dick Miller - Las Vegas] Pete says the way he stops is to bump into something. [Added later: Pete not very good at skating]

My comments: Cute comments. Interesting she went with Erna, not her sister Edith, as usual.

Dick Miller lived in Las Vegas, later - when she added the note. They did remain friends, over the years, regardless of what he did to make her mad at him while skating!  ;-)

Hard up for a photo for this post - Las Vegas has to be the default!  ;-)

Swellest day ever. Starting Whitnell's store. Studied shorthand all morning. Bussy had a cold. Cleaned the store. Don A. & Lewis C. picked me up & bro't me home. Went to choir practice. Went to bed early.
[Note related to Whitnell's store added later: Hardware Store where Laundromat was & Com. Insur is now. Across alley south of Charley Browning law office.]
[Note added later, following Don A. & Lewis C.: Don Anderson & Lewis Clausen both from Old Carrollton.]

My comments: Wasn't Don Anderson a regular at dances? I think so.

It appears she started working at Whitnell's Hardware Store.  It is not clear in what capacity. She studied all morning, cleaned the store in the afternoon. No customers? Office job, nothing to do? Curious!  ;-)

Do you suppose the front window of the Hardware Store looked anything like this?

Lots of sleep again. Had hair washed & set at Jennies. [Added later: Jennie (Linton) Bowman (Shelby)] I drove most of way. Had the keenest time. [Mildly surprised she didn't say who was with her one this trip - 60-65 miles southwest of Coon Rapids - a long way to get your hair done, 1937!] Pete, Elmer, Clark, Ed K., Orrin & Dick P. Little Joe played.  Orrin & Max with us at Intermission. Timmie T. Smoking. Really a swell evening. [Later added, with arrow to Timmie T.: Helen Thomas Galloway.] [also added, below: Little Joe Hart dance band; Danced with Pete, Elmer Lund, Clark Lee, Ed Kult, Orrin Hilgenberg, Dick Peverstorf.]

My comments:  Looks like the usual dance crowd!  ;-)

 75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - March 14, 1937

Here is the entry for Sunday, March 14:

Up at 9:15. To S.S. with Valeria & church, too. She & Dot T. & I went down to Ger's & then to Lil's. Folks to Louise's. I did dishes, baked buns & went to Lunds. Pete here at 7:30. To Carroll with Leo & Ida. "On the Avenue." Really good.
[added later, arrow to Dot T.: Dorothy Thomas (Ruth Bolger's sister was in my grade)]

My comments:  A very interesting Sunday, to me, with a number of different people, doing different things than she has been since the first of the year. I suspect she is 'trying to find herself.' What do you think?

"On the Avenue" starred Dick Powell, Madeleine Carroll and Alice Fay with the Ritz Brothers…

Here is the entry for Saturday, March 13:

Up at 8:00. Spitting snow. Got new gray skirt. Ina & Ermal here [added later: Ina Smith - maybe that's the Smith Estate. Her husband died early in life - Ermal (Betts) her daughter]. Ate at Rhineharts [added later: Archie Rhinehart's folks ran D & D cafe across street where Keeley Show Shop is] with them. Did shopping & went home early. Did dishes & separator, took a bath. Leo to Ida's, her birthday. Bed early. Had 13 hrs sleep.

My comments: Her 'later additions' are in much bolder hand stroke. You kind of get a feeling we are into the fifties by the time she is making these additions, by some of the reference. Very interesting.

Glad to have the Smith thing figured out. Ermal was daughter of Ina - Ermal later married a Betts. I remember Ermal Betts being mentioned… don't think I really knew her. Perhaps one of my readers here can fill me in…  ;-)

Do you suppose the gray skirt looked anything like this?  ;-)

Here is the entry for Thursday, March 11:

Kinda cold out. typed all pm. Typed on Smith estate. [later added note with arrow to Smith: What Smith?] Did separator and dishes. Leo & Bussy & I played "Old Man Wins" with marbles. Took bath and fixed nails. Listened to Bob Burns awhile and went to bed early.

Here is the long entry for Thursday, March 11:

Kinda cold out. Mailed dotted dress back to National. Finished letter started last nite. Wrote to Helen Gray. [Next comes: Hareh occurred! - don't know what that means] Typed Smith estate all afternoon till 5:30. Took car home. Leo & I bro't cars in & left Chevy for Dad. Sold the eggs. Up a cent. Ate & then we kids played Odd Man Wins with Marbles. Did separator & wiped dishes. Took a bath & fixed nails with New Cutex Manicure Set. Listened to Bob Burns awhile & went to bed early.

My comments: Bob Burns was born in 1890 in Greenwood, Arkansas, and became known as The Arkansas Traveler. He was an American radio and film comedian during the 1930s and 1940s.

I could not find anything on a marbles game, "Old Man Wins." Have you heard of it?

Here is the entry for Wednesday, March 10:

Sunny but cold. At office [later added with arrow here: Law Office] again. Typed most of the day. Manicure set from Sandy. [later added with arrow to Sandy: He was a navy boy I wrote to - a friend of Fritz Morman & he sent me so many nice gifts.] Stopped at Lunds awhile. Washed out socks, did separator, sewed a little, to bed early. "This Years Kisses" 1st.

Here is the entry for Wednesday, March 10:

Quite nice out. Sunny but cold. Bussy & I bro't in the V-8. Seemed good to be in a good office again. Typed Comments on an Abstract & some other things. Quite busy most of day. Bussy & I home to dinner. Sandy sent me the keenest Man i Cure Set because I crossed my fingers the day he took his test. Silly him! Listed to boys quartet at Rex's. Julia here awhile. Finished letter & went home at 6:00. Stopped in at Lund's. Washed socks, ate & did separator & fixed zipper on black skirt. To bed about 9:30. "This Year's Kisses" was 1st on Parade.

My comments: She fell right back in to last week's routine  - apparently with now effort or ill effects.

New song was 1st on the Hit Parade!

Here is the long entry for Monday, March 9:

Up about 8:30. Ate at Presto. Got sheet music, kite, cod liver oil, and called Dad & told them to come after me. Went to my room & played Sol. Leo came about 12:00. Started home right away. I drove. Stopped & saw Ila Jean at Sac City. Stopped at Carroll & got candy & a present for Ida Marie - dresser scarf. Home about 3:30. Got Bussy. Glad to be home. Called LVene & Charley C. B. Got supper & folks to show. Pete came at about 8:30. To "Ladies in Love." Not very good. Home about 1:00.

My comments: I imagine she had a lot to talk about with Pete.

Sheet music, she bought with her money, and a kite!

I found the notes about the stops in both Sac City and Carroll very interesting. No comment on what her Dad or her Mom might have said about her coming back. Or, about her going, for that matter. Her Dad took her to Storm Lake, so presumably he supported the move. Will we hear any more about it??

Here is the short entry for Monday, March 8:

Up at 8:00. Ate at Martins. To work at 9:00. Got out Used Car Sheets. Don't like it any too well. To lunch at Sugar Bol with Lou & Charlotte. Lou getting shoes. Awful draggy pm. Nothing to do. Wrote and mailed letter to Pete & the folks. 6:00 finally came. Ate at Martins. Took a bath. Decided to go home. Peck gave me 2.50. I told him CCB called & wanted me back. He swallowed it. Don't like it a bit. Can hardly wait to get home. [Added later, arrow to CCB: C.C.B. is the lawyer, Charles C. Browning.]

Here is the long entry for a Monday, March 8:

Up about 8:00. Fixed my hair, ate breakfast at Martins' & went to work. Busy typing Used Car Sheets all morning & then ate at Sugar Bowl. Loafed all pm. Really got on my nerves. Mailed letters.  Real cold & windy. Went home at six, ate creamed chicken at Martins. Decided not to stay. About 9:00 went over & told him I was wanted here in Coon. He gave me $2.50. Kinda mad about it. Went to my room & took bath, played Sol. & went to bed. Really felt good about quitting.

My comments: Very interesting day. Homesick, mostly, in alien territory. "Coon Rapids" girl, through and through, over and over…  ;-)

Do you suppose the shoes Lou looked at looked like these?

Here is the short entry for Sunday, March 7:

Up at 8:00. Curled hair. Packed. Dad in town 'till 11:15. Left at 11:30 in V-8. ["for Storm Lake" added later] Real foggy. Got here at 1:30. Ate at Martin's, then Dad & I went to see Peck. Got room at Martin's for nite. Dad left about 4:00. Charlotte, Lou & I to "Wings of the Morning." Lunch at Presto's. Home at 11:00. Didn't sleep any too good! Yesterday seems a week ago & tomorrow a year. Oh, for Pete. [Added later, below: Peck owned a big car dealership & I was to be his Sec'y. but he kept pushing up against me.]

Here is the long entry for a Sunday, March 7:

Up at 8:00. Washed & set my hair. Packed and left for Storm Lake at 11:30. I drove part way. Got there at about 2:00. Ate at Martin's & then over to the garage. Real nice offices. Tom Satterlee & Louise Larson there. Got Room 4 at Martin's. Real nice. At nite Louise, Charlotte & I rode in Chevy Coupe. Went to "Wings of Morning" and then ate lunch at Presto Cafe.

My comments:
Quite an adventure for the home-town "Coon Rapids" girl. Storm Lake is 55 miles north of Carroll on US 71. What will happen when she goes in to work on Monday morning?

"Wings of the Morning" was the first Techicolor movie shot in the British Isles, featured Gypsies, horse racing, singing and romance in 1937. It starred Henry Fonda and Annabella.
