75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - January 31, 1937
This entry is the daily post on this blog from the diary of eighteen year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date.
Since midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.
For 1937, the first entry available was for January 4. It was made in a multi-year diary format, so is short. Starting on January 5, there are two entries, one on the small format and a second is a full page entry. I suspect the longer entries were made later, when she got that book… there is no way to know, unless it shows up in the entries. This goes on for a couple of weeks. Let's see how it goes.
Here is the short entry for Sunday, January 31:
Up late at 10:00. Churned & got ready for Lil's & Del. Men butchered. Had lunch before they left. Pete & I to "Ramona." With 2 Ediths, Kenneth & Harold. Really good. Right home.
Here is the long entry for Sunday, January 31:
Didn't get up til 10:00. Churned & got ready for Lil's & Del. Men butchered. Had lunched before they left. Took bath & got ready for nite. Pete & I to show, "Ramona."
My comments: Ramona (1936) starred Loretta Young as Ramona, along with Don Ameche

Snowing & cold. Charlie swept & I dusted. (When get the d-). Fixed my hair, ironed & got ready for dance. Pete came at 8:30. More fun. In Ditch at Glidden. Clark pulled us out. 2:45.
Here is the long entry for Saturday, January 30:
Snowing & cold. Charlie swept & I dusted the store. Played Sol. awhile. Wrote letters. Got groceries & went home at Noon. Fixed my hair, ironed & got ready for dance. Pete came at 8:30. More fun. Crazy Ed Kult "I am young & you're so beautiful." Ditch so. of Glidden. Clark, our hero. [Shorthand symbol] Home at 2:45. When get the d ---
My comments: Sounds like they had a great time at the dance, but maybe got in a little trouble later on…. ;-)

[This one also missing… ]
Here is the long entry for Friday, January 29:
Real cold out. Played cards with 2 decks. Sent in some Shorthand. Pete, Leo, Ila Jean & Robert in store in pm. I did up dishes & listened to First Niters. Went to bed early. Talked about Dairy.
My comments: Ila Jean was the daughter of Robert, first cousin to Eileen - exactly two months older (14 Oct vs. 14 Dec). She married Louis Buhr in 1943.
I think Leo was thinking about possibly going to work for a Dairy, in a nearby town. We'll have to watch and see if that is what is was they were talking about.
I've been unable to find the Ila Jean photo, that is in my mind. I think it is her high school graduation. I did post of photo of Eileen and Ila Jean as 'almost' ten-year-olds. Also, Ila Jean's obit is posted.

Colder out. Snowing a little bit. Sore throat and bad cold. Sent in Ivory Soap Contest letter. Did the dishes and listened to Rudy V., Lanny had Mary Small & child's revue. Really was good. Heard Bing Crosby, too. Too bed early.
My comments: "Tell us in 25 words or less why you like Ivory soap." Prizes included 60 New 1937 Pontiac DeLuxe Sixes and 1000 gallons of Texaco gas. I'd probably have entered, too! ;-)
In 1937, the Pontiac Deluxe was called 'America's Finest Low Priced Car.'

Copied Emmert's music. Mom better. Did dishes. Pete & I went to "Rose Bowl." Clara Loeffler got $100. Went right home.
Here is the long entry for Tuesday, January 26:
Not so cold. Copied off Emmert's music nearly all day long. Home at Noon. Mom better. Did up work. At nite took a bath while folks ate. Did dishes. Pete came at 8:00 & we went to "Rose Bowl." Clara Loeffler got $100. Still $140 left. Went right home.
My comments: Buster Crabbe
was still early in his career in the movies, he had the third position
in "Rose Bowl." His career ran from 1930 to 1982, including the popular
serial Flash Gordon.

Here is the long entry for Monday, January 25:
Colder out. Red (sic) "Redbook" in AM. Dad had Rhinehart sale so Buss & I took the car out at Noon. Mom got up in middle of morning. Got Emmert's music at nite. I got supper. Dad didn't come home. Listened to Fibber Magee & Molly & then I did the dishes. Lillian, Robert & Edna came at 8:30 & stayed till 12:00. Bussy & I went to sleep on cot. Had to make coffee for them.
My comments: I definitely get the impression she was not happy about "Had to make coffee" for them. Couldn't go to bed while 'company' there, so she and Buzzy went to sleep on the cot! Interesting the things she sees as worth recording.

Mom in bed again. We went out home for dinner. Really got lots of work done. Washed stove & part of kitchen wood work. Leo to town again at nite. I stayed home & cleaned out the South room. Real nice out.

Here is the long entry for Thursday, January 21:
Quite cold. It snowed & blew like the dickens. Snow so hard you can walk right over the drifts. Played Honey Moon Bridge & cribbage quite awhile. [That whole sentence underlined] Leo & Mom neither one feeling good at nite. I did up the work. Listened to Rudy, (ventriloquist) Maxwell House & Bing Crosby. Really cold at nite.
My comments: Couldn't find anything special on 'Honey Moon' Bridge. Have you heard of it?
[Eileen's grand-daughter, Allison, came up with the answer, "Honeymoon Bridge" is a set of rules that lets two people play bridge. THANKS, Allison! ;-)]
Bing Crosby was a big star from 1934 to 1954, and beyond in music, radio, and movies. Hats like that in the photo image, below, were very popular, too.

I suspect the longer entries were made later, when she got that book… there is no way to know, unless it shows up in the entries. This goes on for a couple of weeks. Let's see how it goes.
Here is the short entry for Sunday, January 17:
Slept late. Folks at Ger's. We kids at home. Cleaned stove. Listened to good programs Pete came at 8:00. "Sing Baby Sing." Glidden road. Mickey's school. Home at 11:45. Prettiest Moon.
[Note added later: arrow to Mickey - Mickey Parker (country school)]
Here is the long entry for Sunday, January 17:
Slept till 9:30. Late dinner at 2:30. Folks & Buzz went to Louises & Ger's & Leo & I stayed home. I did dishes & cleaned stove real well. Listened to Penner, Benny & "Wanna be an actor" & "We, the People." Pete came at 8:00 & we went to "Sing, Baby, Sing." Drove out on Glidden road afterwards just for fun. Home at 11:45.
My comments: "Sing Baby Sing" - Alice Faye and Adolphe Menjou movie.
Penner, here and here. "We, the People," radio program.
"Glidden road. Mickey's school." Eileen often gives a description of there they "drove" after the movie, or other nite activity - to have time alone together - remember?? ;-) "Prettiest Moon" about says it all!

75 Years Ago - Eileen's Diary - January 16, 1937
Here is the short entry for Saturday, January 16:
Not as cold but real windy. Helen L'ot (sic) hamrs for Edith & me. Had to work in p.m. To town at nite with Edith & Helen. Rode with Kenny P. up to Lenore's. Buss at show. Pete's car. (arrow to Pete) took me home.
[Note added later: arrow to Kenny P. - Kenneth Pingrey (married Elizabeth Welch)]
Here is the long entry for Saturday, January 16:
Not so cold, but terribly windy. Read "Esquire" in morning. Bro't V-8 back in after dinner. Helen sat up Hambgrs for us. I took her & Lenore home. Leo & I & Buzz in town after supper. Buzz to show. I with Edith, Helen. Rode with Kenny P. in new Chevy. Over at Lund's station. Drove Pete's car. Took Helen home. Pete took me home. Erna had attack of appendicitis!
My comments: Couple of new names, that do recur in future months and year: Ken and Elizabeth, as well as Lenore - married Carl Shirbroun; also friends for many years.
I have noticed Eileen occasionally worked on Saturdays.
"Lund's station" was where farmers brought milk, cream and eggs on Saturday night - cash crops. Then, often went shopping on Main Street, a half block away. [I have vague memories of the men, in their hats, from those Saturday nights.]

Here is the short entry for Friday, January 15:
Charlie shaved & I went down & used Bette's new typewriter. Edith, Pete, Betty & Jean here in p.m. At nite to Edith's & Erna's "abliskines" party. Real cold. Prissy took home at 1:00.
[Eileen later added, with arrow to Charlie: Vanderworker owned Maytag store where I worked. $4 a week. Arrow to Prissy: Priscilla Rogers. Then, spelled out: aebilkivers - Danish O pancake]
Here is the long entry for Friday, January 15:
Real cold. Got white ear muffs. Used Betty's new typewriter down there in a.m. Charley played Solitaire till his shaving water was ready. Edith, Betty, Pete & Jean in in p.m. At nite to Edith's & Erna's girl party. "Ableskives," "whipped cream," "I doubt it," "Donkey," "Jingo." Prissy took me home. Stuck in Lund's driveway. Home at 1:00. Boys at Pete's. Arch bothered me. In rather bad humor during the day.
My comments: First, the Danish pancakes. The word means apple slices. The traditional Danish pancakes in a distinctive shape of a sphere. Check out the wikipedia description at the link!
Clearly the Lund family was Danish - as well as Eileen's Mom, Dorothy. However, my Grandma Dorothy was careful not to 'flaunt' being Danish, in any way; although she spoke with a clear accent. It was an interesting phenomena; one opinion.
The Danish 'pancake'
I'd been wondering what Eileen earned at the shop - nice to get the answer; patience is rewarded. Good comparison to expenditures she makes.

Here is the short entry for Thursday, January 14:
Played "Sol" most of day. [That is short for Solitaire!] Jean J. & Betty in in p.m. Terribly cold. White ear muffs. Buss and I walked home. 'Bout froze. Listened to good programs. Finished Jeanette's pillow.
Here is the long entry for Thursday, January 14:
Real cold out and slicker than the dickens. What thawed yesterday froze again & is it ever bad to drive. Played solitaire most of day. Buzz (Buss, originally; then added tails so they look like zz; much later??) & I walked home at nite. Nearly froze. Listened to Rudy, Maxwell & Bob Burns. I finished Ger's baby pillow. To bed early.
My comments: It as been a while since I posted the link to the radio shows. Let's see what we find, today. Rudy Vallee, here and here. Bob Burns, here and here.

Here is the short entry for Wednesday, January 13:
Finished Dr. Ger. typing. Lil & Del here for dinner. Took V-8 in town. Barky Johnson's sale. Mule died. Pete & I played cards & typed at Lunds. To town to get heater warm. [A string of shorthand!][Also, she underlined Barky Johnson's name]
Here is the long entry for Wednesday, January 13:
Thawing a lot. Barkey Johnson's sale. Lil & Del out home for dinner. Eileen, the red mule, died. Pete came at nite & we went to Johnson's & then to Lund's. I typed for Edith & we played Rummy. Reminded of Anthony Adverse. Edith timing Pete to see how long it took for him to take me home.
Typed for Dr. Gertrude. Norma & Don here in pm.
My comments: This is the first of many (obviously private) shorthand comments she left... ;-)
This is the first I had heard of "Eileen, the red mule" I need to write to Buzzy and see if he remembers… ;-) He would have been about 9.
Anthony Adverse was a movie they had seen a month or so ago.
Rummy was a common card game. We were taught to play is as kids.
A hand of Rummy - courtesy Wikipedia
"Lil & Del" [Paul's sister; aunt to Eileen] were well known to show up at meal time - that continued into the 1950-1970s, as well. P.S. Three-year-old Roberta would likely have been with them, as well.

Here is the short entry for Tuesday, January 12:
Nice out. Thawed. Typed for Betty & Dr. Ger. [added margin note: Dr. Gertrude (Collard) was an osteopath (in Johnson house)] Walked home. At nite Buss & I to Bayard games. Folks to Bk. nite. "Rip" Morman's name called. With Edith & Norma. Won all 3 games.
Here is the long entry for Tuesday, January 12:
Nice out again but a little colder. Norma called in pm. Betty here after school. Left some typing for me to do. At nite Bussy & I went to the Bayard games. Rest of folks went to bank nite. With Edith and Norma. Home at 11:00. We won all 3 games.
My comments: I'm curious about "3 games" - would expect it to be boys and girls basketball. We'll have to wait to see if later notes give more clues. She was pretty regular at following high school sports.
I assume she was being paid for doing the typing. Her ledger accounts may have some more insight into that. She does typing for folks fairly regularly. He dad had the typewriter… stayed in the family, for years… an old upright Underwood. She was still typing 'family newsletters" on it in the 1960-70s.

Here is the short entry for Monday, January 11:
To work again. Studied & played "Solitare." Typed for Betty a little. At nite listened to Fibber & Molly & Lux Theater "Gilded Lily." Embroidered on Ger's baby pillow.
Here is the long entry for Monday, January 11:
Real swell day but it didn't thaw very much. Came in to work. Played Solitaire. Quite busy in p.m. Jean & Betty down to see me. Buzz & I started walking home & Pevestorfs picked us up. Sewed on pillow for Gertrude's baby. Listened to Fibber Magee & Molly, Pick & Pat & Lux Theater "The Gilded Lily." Main man was Pete again. Went to bed after programs.
My comments: 'Pick and Pat' here was new to me - a forerunner to Amos and Andy is seems.
You can actually download the radio program "The Gilded Lily" that she listened to, in MP3 format on your computer or other listening device.
Here is the description of the 1935 movie of the same name…

Here is the short entry for Sunday, January 10:
Road open. Still cold. Cleaned the house. Buss [Buzzy] & I went to Liebs [She added a note, off to the top: Lieb was Clark Lee's uncle & they were bachelors. He probably left the farm to Clark.] & slid on his hill. More fun. Pete came at nite. "Anthony Adverse." Swell! Out home in kitchen. Leo came. Pete & I put V-8 in garage.
Here is the long entry for Sunday, January 10:
Slept rather late. Cleaned up the house & went out doors & over to Leib's. Really swell out. After dinner Buzz & I went sliding over on Leib's hill. Had the keenest time. Made cheese sandwiches & cleaned up. Pete came about 7:30. Went to "Anthony Adverse." Really was good! Out home afterwards. Had to put V-8 in garage. Had keenest time!
My comments: In the late 1940s and into the 1950s, Clark Lee was my barber in Coon Rapids. He was married then, to one of Mom's friends. Real nice guy. Don't know that they had an children, come to think of it… ;-)
Interesting that 'putting the V-8 in the garage' - after the snow storm was over, could be the "keenest time!" Wonder what they were really doing, in the car? 18 and 21 years old… ;-)

Here is the long entry for Saturday, January 9:
Sun shining & getting nicer out. Reisberg & Shawd got road open. Dad walked in again. Leo drove Chevy & I drove V-8 in town in pm. Saw & sat with Pete. "Reason girls go with him is because he has so much money." Rode home with Dad. Did dishes, listened to Kate Smith on Sealtest Hour. About froze coming down the lane.

Dad walked to town. I didn't go to work. Lots of snow. Roads closed. Cleaned up house. Got cobs, wood, & water out doors. Cleaned library drawer. Did dishes & listened to "Nite for Murder."
Here is the long entry for Friday, January 8:
Snow really deep. Kept up all nite until about Noon today. Dad walked to town. Charlie called & said I needn't come in to work. Cleaned up the house & went out doors & did chores & looked around. No cars through all day. Dad walked home. Nearly frozen. Listened to First Nighters, did dishes, & went to bed early. Mom lots better. Really cold up stairs.
My comment: Could not find a "Nite for Murder" 1937 Radio show link; Oh, well - I'm amazed at how many I do find! ;-)

Coldest it's ever been this morning. Mom stayed in bed. I had to get up & get breakfast. Almost didn't get around one corner. Slid in ditch taking Buzzy to school house. Erna & Behren's kids rode with us. Dad & I rode home at nite. Snowing on top of ice. Getting deep & drifting. Did dishes & listened to Rudy & Maxwell & then I went to sleep on cot. Really cold.

Wordless (nearly) Wednesday - Dick and Jeanette
Wordless (nearly) Wednesday
Dick and Jeanette
Returning home from being out of town over the holidays, it was so neat to open this 2011 Christmas card, with all the latest news, from my KINNICK cousins, in California. Neat cover photo on card!
Dick and Jeanette Kinnick Brideson Shapley
Jeanette was one of my earliest cousin correspondents as I began my serious research on the KINNICK family back in the early 1990s. She is the daughter of Gertrude KINNICK, one of five children of Alonzo and Nettie (WILLIAMS) KINNICK, along with my maternal grandfather, Paul.

Eileen's Diary
January 4, 1937
This entry starts a daily post on this blog from the diary of eighteen year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date. Eileen had recently turned 18 years old, just before Christmas. [Eileen, who is the mother of the author of this blog, died in 1999, at age 80]
Background: For 1936, Eileen's diary entries have been online since 2005. Midway through 2010, a weekly update/comments blog entry began to appear on the Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories blog. Those weekly entries, on that blog, on each Tuesday of the week, will continue, with links to these daily entries.
The 1936 entries ended with January 1, 1937. There are not entries for January 2 and 3 available. For 1937, the first entry available is for January 4.
Here is the entry for Monday, January 4:
Wore ski pants to work. Studied shorthand. Paul T. got my typewriter. Got 7 curls (Zoto)(sic) at 5:00. I brought car home alone. Heard Fibber MaGee & Molly & "Men in White". Embroidered.
My Comments:
Fibber McGee & Molly debuted on the radio on 16 Apr 1936.
Fibber McGee and Molly 1937 Archive - That voice is sooooo… familiar; listened many years, myself.
Lux Radio Theater - men in white - 1/4/1937
